I do think these guys' music tended to be a little on the lethargic side.

Paisley Underground hate??? I've never noticed it here (didn't think enough people were aware of it to have a backlash!).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 21:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I love this band - especially Emergency Third Rail Power Trip.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

first album and 'explosions' ep = hell of classic. "i look around" = oen of my favourite lead guitar parts ever

jimmy glass (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 23:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Totally love everything up to Crashing Dream. Not sure what happened when they sign with Island. I though the production ruined that album. I have never seen a copy of Demolition, but I did get the 2nd live CD called Perfume River. The version of Sad Eyes Kill on Perfume River blows the Crashing Dream one away. Is there any difference between Beyond the Sunset and Behind the Sunset besides the cover? I think Behind the Sunset was a Japanese only release and the cover has a picture of the back of the sun.

Do you guys think Rain Parade kick butt over a group like Mercury Rev? I don't know how relevant the comparison is; I don't know the Mercury Rev albums, but I saw them live once.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 22 September 2005 01:39 (eighteen years ago) link

odd comparison. i prefer the first RP album to any mercury rev, and i think david roback is more talented than anyone in mercury rev. Opal grinds MR's entire body of work into dust.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 22 September 2005 02:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Opal grinds MR's entire body of work into dust.

Come on, get a grip, man. I love both Opal and (early) Mercury Rev, but I have to say that Yerself Is Steam and Boces are at least as great as Opal's Happy Nightmare Baby, if not superior. They're certainly more diverse.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 22 September 2005 02:23 (eighteen years ago) link

i guess i was thinking more of early recordings. i have great love for mercury rev's first four albums but i think the songs on early recordings are far superior. anyway the comparison probably doesn't really work.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 22 September 2005 02:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Question for Rain Parade fans. "You Are My Friend" seems to me to be their catchiest single. The EP it appears on does not list *David* Roback, but I'm wondering how much he had to do with that record?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 September 2005 02:58 (eighteen years ago) link

he'd left the band by that stage, but he may have had some hand in the songwriting (?)

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:14 (eighteen years ago) link

actually this page http://www.sa-wa-ro.com/RainParade-Pages/rp-eitgp.htm would indicate he wasn't involved at all

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Interesting.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay Spencer, hate is too strong a description, but a lot of meh-ing involved certainly.

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 22 September 2005 07:08 (eighteen years ago) link

weird. I must have some newer, non-original release version of the album. it's got 15 tracks - this one:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE5781CD848AF7420C287255EF6B553EB08D64CF5C01D2F4749D7B3225C8A0166E040ACC6CFB3E577B479AAB326AE5E06D9CEEB468DA1&sql=10:0kjgtq3ztu46

and the last few songs are quite wonderful.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 22 September 2005 11:51 (eighteen years ago) link

That's because from track 11 onward it is the EP/Mini Album 'Explosions In The Glass Palace'.

It's also worth mentioning that Look Both Ways was tacked onto Emergency and is an earlier demo.

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 22 September 2005 13:01 (eighteen years ago) link

oh! let me say that that is a great great EP. wow.

"My Secret Country" is a number 1 jam, amongst others.

I was listening to Crashing Dream on the way home from work the other day, haven't bought the reissue yet that just came out, don't suppose there are any extra tracks.

Love that eerie slide guitar on Gone West.

Inevitable I suppose: http://www.slicingupeyeballs.com/2012/09/26/rain-parade-reunion-benefit-bobby-sutliff-windbreakers/

Celebrated Paisley Underground act Rain Parade will reunite onstage in Atlanta early next year for the first time in more than two decades to play a benefit concert for Bobby Sutliff, singer/guitarist/songwriter for ’80s contemporaries The Windbreakers, who was seriously injured in a car accident over the summer.

The concert will take place Jan. 19 at The Earl — and it appears it won’t be the only reunion show for the Rain Parade. On his Facebook page, singer-guitarist Matt Piucci recently posted that, “Rain Parade needs a great drummer. … Not a ton of gigs planned, but cool ones.” He also suggested European concerts are in the works: “Fully intend to cross the pond in 2013.”

As for benefit show, promoter Chris Chandler says he asked Piucci why he’s reforming the Rain Parade now after years of resisting pleas for a reunion. Piucci’s response: “Our friend as badly hurt. We were asked to help. Here we come.”

Holy crap, I'm so happy! One of my favourite bands since I was in school, never even considered they'd ever get back together.

huh, wonder if david roback is involved?

Oh man, I hope Roback's involved!

The only Roback on board was Steven. Of the original crew, only Piucci, Steven Roback and John Thoman are there.

D!me again

RAIN PARADE
Torino, Big Club, Nov 13, 1985
Soundboard recording from the master reel.

QUALITY: A-
TIMING: 62:54

LINEAGE: Mixing desk > Reel recorder > K7 > CD > FLAC > YOU

A picture disc was bootlegged from this very recording (actually a copy of my tape), but the mastering work was awful and the sound quality is a lot worse than the original - also, it has 11 tracks, here we have 17. This is the whole thing, from the venue's manager introduction straight to the encores.
I have vined a copy of this cd many years ago, in my PaisleyWeeds Yahoogroup, so some of you might have got it already. Just check the timing and number of songs.

TRACKLIST:
01. Intro/No easy way down
02. It can't be today
03. Ain't that nothing
04. Invisible people
05. Don't feel bad
06. You are my friend
07. Broken horse
08. Mystic Green
09. Depending on you
10. My secret country
11. Blue
12. Night shade
13. Both eyes closed
14. Cheap wine
15. Band intro
16. Only business
17. 1+1/2 hrs. ago

Overall thumbs up on the new album. I never, ever considered something like Neil Young's Electric Light Orchestra and I feel dumb that such an obviously fun concept was there for the taking.
