Tuomas, I don't think ones that keep the vocals should be discounted. As examples, the Chemical Brothers dispense with Method Man's rapping halfway through on 'Bring The Pain' (that's 78) and someone like Cornelius sometimes rearranges the verses and key lyrics or messes with the singer's voice etc.

a friend told me his remix of Gentle People's 'Journey' was quite different from the original but i've never heard the original - that remix makes me ache though, tragic beauty etc.

Sounds nothing like the original -- different and faster drum'n'bass beat, no vocals, not the slightest hint of familiarity that would link it to the original at all. I'm baffled about how they made it from that song.

Apart from the repeated 'I Luv U's, this has basically nothing to do with the original. It's not even thematically similar.

Uses just one slowed-down sample of Sarah C. singing "skin" from the line "he said her skin smelled just like pebbles".

Only keeps the "There's no music on the radio" line and puts it over a totally new background.

Only the "Confusion!" vocals remain.

59 Therapy? - Nowhere (Sabres Of Paradise remix)

ditches all but the glockenspiely pattern for some moody bass and quite chilling electric guitar. Great in a 'late night paranoia' sense.

55. Natural Calamity - 'Home' Prince Paul ReMix feat. Paul Barman
Not so much exclusive of the original (because the vocals and rhythm remain) as just very subversive of it, via Paul building on the childlike innocence of the original's lyrics, changing the entire thing form a dinky exotica pop song into a slow burning, keyboard hip hop rework of beauty, then getting Paul Barman to rhyme about (bad) sex and himself in what is maybe the biggest "um, that's not what we were talking about" rap cameo over. As a bonus, it totally proves that Paul doesn't need Automator to do his own Handsome Boy thing.

Both remixed by Brian Eno, neither of which sound like the original, one of them sounds like he took the very end from Get Right With Me from their Songs of Faith & Devotion album and looped it for about 8 minutes.

Wasn't there some story about Richard D. James missing a deadline and when whoever he was supposed to remix showed up he just handed them one of his early demo tapes stating that there is "very little left from the original"?

And all the other remixes off that EP. They're great stuff, but damn if Four Tet didn't have to dig so hard to find those 1-2 second unfamiliar snippets that he uses to build the new mixes.

I have absolutely no idea what he uses from the original track.

if i remember right, they change the time signature to 5/4 and leave out the vocals entirely
