91. Black Grape 'Fatneck (Goldie mix)'

a few of the same sounds twisted up but otherwise totally different

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:52 (eighteen years ago) link

90. Therapy? - Loose (Photek remix)

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:52 (eighteen years ago) link

that (not very good) black grape record brings back painful memories.

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:53 (eighteen years ago) link

89. david holmes 'my mate paul' (skylab mix)

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:54 (eighteen years ago) link

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000I57J.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Only collected edition for his total remake style.

91. UNKLE - 'Ape Shall Never Kill Ape'
The melody is replayed via thrash guitars. Thematically bound to the original via Planet of The Apes samples and an old school hip hop breakdown (but not the same beats), but otherwise nada.

90. Money Mark - Maybe I'm Dead'
The lyrics remain in pitched up form.

89. Buffalo Daughter - 'Great Five Lakes'
The vocals again. And scratches.

88. Coldcut - 'Atomic Moog 2000'
The sampled rapper hook and the jazz influence.

87. The Pastels - 'Windy Hill'
The vocals.

86. The High Llamas - 'Homespin Rerun'
The vocals and the string section.

85. Salon Music - 'Galaxie Express' 69 Mix
Vocals and rock influence.

Obviously, as a pop remixer he tends to keep a lot of vocals, but the backing is always different and stranger than before.

Autechre - EP7 / ENVANE (BOGDAN RACZYNSKI REMIX)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't it more of a rule than an exception that a remixer keeps the vocals and changes the background? I was thinking of remixes a bit further out...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:58 (eighteen years ago) link

As well as the Black Grape remix the Goldie mix of Babylon Zoo's 'The Boy With The X-Ray Eyes' was radically different in exactly the same way.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 08:58 (eighteen years ago) link

dignity, always dignity.

N_ERQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:01 (eighteen years ago) link

83. the prodigy versus method man '[oh fuck whatever it was]'

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:02 (eighteen years ago) link

x-postal.

79. Badly Drawn Boy - 'Pissing In The Wind' Lemon Jelly Remix
The title lyrics.

Tuomas, I don't think ones that keep the vocals should be discounted. As examples, the Chemical Brothers dispense with Method Man's rapping halfway through on 'Bring The Pain' (that's 78) and someone like Cornelius sometimes rearranges the verses and key lyrics or messes with the singer's voice etc.

oh maybe i meant 'bring the pain'. no, it goes 'check it, i'm the fucking man'.

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:04 (eighteen years ago) link

78. lionrock 'packet of peace' chemical brothers mix (such an awesome spring for chemical bros remixes)

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:05 (eighteen years ago) link

release yo'delf

xpost

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, "changing the backing" for vocal remixes doesn't usually go beyond "sticking new beats behind the vocals and using different samples" - it takes a more adventurous mind to retool the song completely from the melodies up.

76. The Polyphonic Spree - 'Soldier Girl' RJD2 mix

78. http://home.swipnet.se/~w-10098/auteurs/pictures/u-ziq.jpg
This album has no track titles, so I'm not sure what the first one is called, but if there's an indie guitar song buried somewhere in the first track, it sure is deep. (Like Aphex Twin, I think µ-ziq openly said he hated the source material and did the remixes only for cash. That didn't stop him from creating one of the best records he has ever released, though.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Underground Movies!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:08 (eighteen years ago) link

74 & 73. Alex Gopher - 'Party People'/DJ Shadow - 'Six Days' Soulwax mixes
72. Optiganally Yours - 'Mr. Wilson' Plus-Tech Squeeze Box Remix
71. The Avalanches - 'Since I Left You' Cornelius remix (perhaps the best of his post '99 ones, a bit better than the original too, though some may prefer Blur's 'Tender'. See how much of the original is left in this compared to Prince Paul and Sterolab's efforts!)
70. Seelenluft ft. Mike Master Michael Smith- 'Manila' Manitoba remix
Have to mention the LRD mix of 'Silver Screen Shower Scene' AGAIN because although it keeps the vox the rest is on such a different level from the original.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:23 (eighteen years ago) link

But then, Richard D James owns this thread.

ROCnelius will fight him. He often treats remixes of other people as an opportunity to remix (and devlop) himself (as do Plus-Tech).

i don't think aphx counts because he usually isn't 'remixing' at all. there's far out, and there's there's putting out your own off-cuts on the sly.

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 09:51 (eighteen years ago) link

that's precisely why he should count.

a friend told me his remix of Gentle People's 'Journey' was quite different from the original but i've never heard the original - that remix makes me ache though, tragic beauty etc.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:22 (eighteen years ago) link

The Gentle People are (literally) the Legz Akimbo of dance, Steve, so I don't think you're missing much.
but that's not remixing, it's fraud! if the music's good, fine, but it's not a remix. ooh, rockism!

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:26 (eighteen years ago) link

68 U2 - Even better than the real thing (perfecto mix)
Oakenfield puts them through an Italian House wringer, and they come out sounding better than they ever did with Eno; and for once you're not left wishing you were hearing a Pet Shop or Cash cover version. Like all pop divas Bono's belting sounds better over a throbbing, campy pulse than any rock-u-space.

Guy Beckett (guy), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:13 (eighteen years ago) link

of course it's a remix. it says remix.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:31 (eighteen years ago) link

i think that's a bit literalist. (actually this is just me not liking aphx and his 'pranks'.)

N_RQ, Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:33 (eighteen years ago) link

67. Hooverphonic - "Club Montepulciano (808 State Mix)"

Sounds nothing like the original -- different and faster drum'n'bass beat, no vocals, not the slightest hint of familiarity that would link it to the original at all. I'm baffled about how they made it from that song.

Ian Riese-Moraine's all but an ark-lark! (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:58 (eighteen years ago) link

66. Dizzee Rascal - I Luv U (Sharky Remix)

Apart from the repeated 'I Luv U's, this has basically nothing to do with the original. It's not even thematically similar.

minolta (minolta), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:09 (eighteen years ago) link

65. Saint Etienne -- Like A Motorway (Skin Up You're Already Dead) (remixed by Autechre)

Uses just one slowed-down sample of Sarah C. singing "skin" from the line "he said her skin smelled just like pebbles".

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

64. Client - "Radio (Rex The Dog Remix)"

Only keeps the "There's no music on the radio" line and puts it over a totally new background.

Seb (Seb), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Goldfrapp - Ooh La La (Teichwarz Remix)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Max Tundra's remix of Mogwai's "Helicon 2"... Max (eventually) replays the melody on an accoustic 12 string and xylophone, not so much a remix.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

61. New Order - "Confusion" (Pump Panel Reconstruction mix)

Only the "Confusion!" vocals remain.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 2 June 2005 17:24 (eighteen years ago) link

DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide (Düse Remix)

Apart from three snippets of the vocals, unrecognizable.

90. Therapy? - Loose (Photek remix)

59 Therapy? - Nowhere (Sabres Of Paradise remix)

57. Underworld - Born Slippy NUXX (Deep Pan) (anything left from the original?)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 3 June 2005 12:31 (eighteen years ago) link

56. A Guy Called Gerald 'Voodoo Ray (Justin Robertson mix)'

ditches all but the glockenspiely pattern for some moody bass and quite chilling electric guitar. Great in a 'late night paranoia' sense.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 3 June 2005 12:44 (eighteen years ago) link

That Gentle People mix was kinda underwhelming. Also, it does in fact sound like something they would sing over! I wonder how many Cornelius fans form the RFH 3 years ago still want them dead.

55. Natural Calamity - 'Home' Prince Paul ReMix feat. Paul Barman
Not so much exclusive of the original (because the vocals and rhythm remain) as just very subversive of it, via Paul building on the childlike innocence of the original's lyrics, changing the entire thing form a dinky exotica pop song into a slow burning, keyboard hip hop rework of beauty, then getting Paul Barman to rhyme about (bad) sex and himself in what is maybe the biggest "um, that's not what we were talking about" rap cameo over. As a bonus, it totally proves that Paul doesn't need Automator to do his own Handsome Boy thing.

BARMS, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Their vocals are still on that remix 'we are taking you on a journey' etc. I love the muffled speech, all very (coffee table of) departure lounge. When the strings come in that David Holmes nicked for 'Rodney Yates' then it's blubbin' time.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 3 June 2005 13:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I've finally found a string section that doesn't make me want to swoon!

BARMS, Friday, 3 June 2005 13:40 (eighteen years ago) link

54 S'Express - Hey, music lover (Glass Cut)
Philip Glass rebuilds the S'Express track as a mantra to minimalism; and whilst confirming his pop edge, marking the debt owed to serialists by everyone from Moroder to Reese & Santonio.

39. Wyclef Jean's "Cheated" (Rock Remix), which despite the name can hardly be considered a remix at all, but a completely new song which shares the one line "To all the girls I cheated on before." Entirely different lyrics, melody, style, everything. And a wonderful track besides.

38. Lady Sovereign - Random (Menta Remix ft. Riko)

Same chorus but that's it, completely different tempo, verses, samples, etc. Like two different songs.

36. Depeche Mode - I Feel You (life's too short mix)and(swamp mix)

Both remixed by Brian Eno, neither of which sound like the original, one of them sounds like he took the very end from Get Right With Me from their Songs of Faith & Devotion album and looped it for about 8 minutes.

Mike Prouten, Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:37 (seventeen years ago) link

35. Phoenix "If I Ever Feel Better" Todd Edward remix
- original vocals split and rearranged in classic Todd style (and with a religious message inserted)

as for Bjork i'd pick:

36. "Possibly Maybe" Lucy Mix
- Mark Bell's production, vocal heavily distorted and vocoded (is it even a real word?) or possibly re-recorded for the remix.

37. "Anchor Song" Black Dog Mix

xpost
Wasn't there some story about Richard D. James missing a deadline and when whoever he was supposed to remix showed up he just handed them one of his early demo tapes stating that there is "very little left from the original"?

Just the vocals; the music is the two great exclamation mark bands (Wham! and Neu!) duking it out.

Mitya (Leo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok, I need someone to help me out with this one. At a hipster dance party a couple months ago the mix playing before the band took the stage had a completely deconstructed remix of "Funkytown" by Lipps, Inc. It took about 2-3 minutes before I recognized the bassline, and then about 2-3 minutes later the synth line and the vocals "Gotta move on" were mixed in.

Anyone have any ideas what remix this was?

And just so that my post isn't completely useless:

27) Madvillain - Rhinestone Cowboy (Four Tet Remix)

And all the other remixes off that EP. They're great stuff, but damn if Four Tet didn't have to dig so hard to find those 1-2 second unfamiliar snippets that he uses to build the new mixes.
