Favorite moment in Hated: Todd the Director is interviewing Unk (of the band, Pig Pen) about his memories of GG, and Unk describes inviting some girl over to a barbecue where GG was going to be for the purposes of peeing in his mouth. Unk stops himself, saying "Ooh, I mentioned her name, you can edit that out, right?" Todd says "Yes,"....BUT LEAVES IT IN! Har.

As amazing as this documentary is, even more memorable is the "50 minutes of bonus footage" on the dvd. This is a home video Phillips made of GG's last performance. Right after this video, GG had a drug binge and overdosed and died and then they put headphones on his bloated body and had a traditional funeral for him but the drummer was still naked when he helped carry the coffin.

His set was supposed to be backed by both Squirrel Bait and Volcano Suns guys, but his behavior during the soundcheck pretty much nixed that idea. I believe he took a shit during the soundcheck, so the club had him on a short leash. He ended up breaking his mic during his set, and the club pulled the plug before he could do too much more damage.

so I have a queston...
did the dude like eat bran muffins all day or something? I mean who shits THAT MUCH? Every story I read about him involves shit. I knew it was a part of his performance, but he managed to sound check it too?!?
I never saw him and narrowly missed a bad experience. He played a club where I had been sound guy about a month after I quit. Part of the job involved putting away the mics at the end of the night, and in this case, the vocal mic had evidently been in his ass by that point. Ew. I also wouldn't want to the singer for the band playing there the following night.
― chëshy (chëshy f cat), Thursday, 20 January 2005 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link
No, but he did "Road Trip" and "Old School." Todd Phillips - he also did a documentary on frat guys that was supposed to be great but went unaired after HBO buried it when they learned that Phillips crossed some "ethical lines" during a hazing ceremony. I have always meant to look for a bootleg of that film. Anyway, yeah, I guess he's an old punk rocker. He was recently in the trades for clashing with Sascha Baron Cohen and getting booted as the director of the "Borat" movie.
Oh, the mic-in-the-ass reminds me of the part in "Hated" where he gets brought in to NYU by some eager students on the program board. His entire appearance consists of him walking out naked and shoving a banana up his asshole. People run screaming; end of "speaking engagement." Genius.

My favorite moment in "Hated" is when the narrator says, in a completely deadpan monotone: "GG had some of the most devoted fans in the world," as a still photo of a guy with a passed-out GG's dick in his mouth comes on the screen.
This was ridiculous. Anyone else see this recently? It's on Pitchfork.tv this week.
― stephen, Friday, 25 April 2008 15:47 (fifteen years ago) link
I've not seen Hated and was a little young to have been able to see him live, but my favorite GG story comes from an interview I read in the early 90s (I believe it was in Alternative Press). The interviewer and GG were having a seemingly (atypical?) intelligent and well-mannered exchange about GG's craft during which he, without warning or provocation, got up from his barstool, urinated on it, and sat back down on it, continuing the conversation as if nothing had happened.
― Pillbox, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link
Who said that was their fave moment? I couldn't find it on the site. Also, what's so ridiculous about it?
― Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link
he managed to sound check it too?!?
LOL
Also, what's so ridiculous about it?
Well, if memory serves, the snapshot that they cut to depicts one of GG's fans smiling into the camera and giving a thumbs up while performing fellatio on GG, who is passed out cold. Under utterly deadpan narration about his "loyal fans."
― Savannah Smiles, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm still confused. Given GG Allin's polymorphous perversity, isn't that just par for the course?
― Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 25 April 2008 17:58 (fifteen years ago) link
Levels of devotion (low to high):
- buying tour t-shirt at gig - searching high & low for 7" and imports and promo materials - attending 3 or more shows during the same tour in different states - cyberstalking forums, blogs, etc. whenever your favorite artist is discussed in an unflattering manner - sucking off said artist when the artist is conscious - sucking off said artist when the artist is passed out
― David R., Friday, 25 April 2008 18:01 (fifteen years ago) link
Devotion? Absolutely. Ridiculousness? Um, we ARE talking about GG Allin here, correct?
― Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 25 April 2008 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link
I think the guy that's got the dick in his mouth is the "riduculous" part of the equation, but keep on posting about this, because someone's sure to agree with you eventually.
― David R., Friday, 25 April 2008 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link
Well, the reason I "keep on posting about this" is because when I saw a preview screening of Hated (with Phillips in attendance) the ONLY shot that elicited genuine shock from the markedly "avant" audience was that one. They greeted everything else with yuks and ews. But that show generated a lower toned "ohhhhhh" like a bunch of blue-haired biddies with their sense of propriety rocked.
So don't kid yourself that it had anything to do with Allin being passed out. They were appalled because they were seeing a man with a dick in his mouth. A crack whore pissing in Allin's mouth while he barfs up hot dogs? That's good times. But m2m fellatio? This will not stand!
And I suspect the same thing is happening here.
But gee, sorry to take up your precious time with it.

the dude w/ dick in mouth was no big deal, honestly. i'm surprised they didn't try to get a little more clarity on gg's ambiguous sexuality but i guess maybe counter to the film's "philosophy" and maybe he just couldn't get anything good out of gg on the subject?
also the people in the hometown were pretty hilarious. the "high school buddy" who shows up for an interview in a motorcycle jacket and aviators. the guitarist who dropped out of gg's band and comes across like a total moron. and some of them were downright scary, like the creepy high school teacher and the naked drummer.

Kevin, I doubt people were so appauled by man-on-man action. The more likely scenaro is that no matter whether one is gay or straight or somewhere in between, the idea of GG's nasty cock in one's mouth is repulsive, as the man was a filthy walking compost heap. And your "blue hair biddies" comment is ageist.
Never saw GG, but it always irritated me how, on talk shows in the '80s at the height of the PMRC nonsense, they'd have GG on--this pathetic, blathering idiot--to represent the side of free speech.

― unperson, Saturday, 26 April 2008 15:36 (fifteen years ago) link
You diagnose me with monomania and yet you're not an Armchair Psychologist yourself? Okay.
The more likely scenaro is that no matter whether one is gay or straight or somewhere in between, the idea of GG's nasty cock in one's mouth is repulsive,
I'd buy that if the tone of the audience hadn't changed so decidedly. And yeah, the biddies comment was shitty of me.
But get back to the music, maaaaaaan (never mind that the music matters less here than it does with Milli Vanilli).
I had a chance to see him in Chicago. The club was called Exit or The Exit. I even want to say I remember the day - Jan. 5 (forget the year). Sadly, I didn't get to go because I couldn't find anyone to drive me into the city from the burbs in inclement weather (and to go see GG Allin).
But I did take a leak in a bathroom in which Allin reportedly asked a girl to piss in a cup so he could drink it.

The wikipedia article needs amending here However, his status as a cult figure is such that a number of bands have covered his songs. Among them, Faith No More has covered "I Wanna Fuck Myself", CKY has covered "Bite it You Scum", the 69 Eyes have covered "Gimme Some Head," Beck has covered "Tough Fucking Shit", and The Lemonheads have covered "Layin' Up With Linda". to add Joseph Cotton.

― Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Friday, 30 April 2010 08:22 (thirteen years ago) link
the 69 Eyes have covered "Gimme Some Head,"
this is one of the saddest songs in history, by the way - there's a poignancy to it because it predates GG actually figuring out what's shocking - it sounds like it was written by a guy who's really never done much but suspects there's a whole really transgressive world out there, but the most transgressive thing he can really think of is some head. Hey ,now , girls, I want lip-service/I don't wear a uniform and I'm not in the service/I've been in all day never seein' the sun/but when the sun goes down to the night I come/girls ,girls ,girls ,girls/gimme ,gimme ,gimme some head/I like the nasty things that you do to me in bed. Yes, GG. The incredibly nasty things as for example this really common sex practice that everybody does. I am excited to hear that you don't leave the house til after the sun goes down though! Incredible! Do the authorities know about this?
Really, that this song begins "Hey now, girls," is the sort of thing that, on the wrong day on a big enough sleep deficit, will make me cry for several hours
