Venom vs. Bathory

_under the sign of the black mark_ continues to leave furrows in my gray matter, with that nasty, horrible fuzz guitar noise that varg vikernes stole for his best burzum material.

venom are unutterably classic, too. what's with this vs. crap? everything up to _possessed_ is just amazing, but i especially love _welcome to hell_ for it's completely ridiculous, terribly production and moronic lyrics. they knew they were stupid, too, which only made them greater.

As I recall ,Bathory's lyrics go something like this - 'Tear the lid off this infant's flesh box then chime the seven gate bells', of course this was years before the release of the grand Ted Nugent opus 'Venom Soup'.The Rolling Stones were clearly influenced by Bathory when they donned medieval costumes for 'Their Satanic Majesties Request' album and their 'Goat's Head Soup' album has a yellow cover(whatever the hell that means?).Anyway, all this soup talk is making me hungry...now let's see...eye of lizard...

If you'd asked me last year, I would have said Venom. Now I'm leaning toward Bathory. Blood Fire Death is jawdropping! I think I appreciate the purity of focus with Bathory, plus Quorthon has an unbelievably great scream.

bathory has some staggering tracks... you have to listen to it loud for the full impact. bedroom angry nerd viking fantasies sound pretty cool here.

listened to both Venom "Black Metal" and the first s/t Bathory record today coincidentally, and posting to say DAMN BATHORY IS RAW. Venom is good hard metal, but Bathory is the real start of BM to my ears.

i picked up that 1st bathory album in a charity shop last week and yes its primitive, raw as fuck music.

listening to both today because i recently started reading the lords of chaos book. i was impressed by venom but when i skipped straight into bathory's Blood Fire Death i was blown away. then i went back to the S/T and was even morer blown awayerer. i am basically the maxell tape guy right now. i am crossing my fingers that they don't end up sacrificing babies later to satan later in the book because for now they just kind of rule

you know what, even if they did, if that's what it takes to make "in conspiracy with satan" just do it guys, have at it

Bathory's intense, but Venom's way more fun.

Hammerheart > Venom > Bathory

aw man, i haven't gotten around to hammerheart yet. satanic friday is going to have to become a tradition for me

was that supposed to say Hellhammer > Venom > Bathory?

if not, Hellhammer > Venom > Bathory

Devilock, Saturday, 4 March 2017 09:17 (seven years ago) link

honestly as important as HH is, Bathory's career trajectory is really beautiful and the Viking metal records are some of the most wonderful night-driving music there is. Venom is better than its detractors say and worse than its partisans claim. Bathory on top of these three imo

Early Venom's sloppy, cartoony Satanic fury is pure joy, but I think Bathory's Under the Sign of the Black Mark is a pinnacle that can't be touched. Kinda achieved some sort of aggro zen state through that pulsing fuzz. Special piece of work.

I like the Viking albums (mostly) but it makes me miss the purity of some of the older stuff.

i really, really, really like the instrumental intros to all of the bathory albums i've listened to so far. they keep reminding me of popul vuh, although maybe part of that is that i keep getting an Aguirre The Wrath Of God vibe from Bathory.

Karl Malone, Saturday, 4 March 2017 18:00 (seven years ago) link

was that supposed to say Hellhammer > Venom > Bathory?

Nuh-uh. I mean Hammerheart, the allfucking Bathory album. Much as I dig the early filth & spikes stuff, Hammerheart's on a whole different and also other separate level.

Ha, can dig this. Will keep in mind next time I fire them up.

tbh I've hated the Bathory I've heard past Blood Fire Death. I don't think Viking metal is for me. Mind you I haven't heard any Venom from that time so it wouldn't be fair to base any comparison on that because I'm sure they probably sucked in the early 90s as well.

i prefer bathory (the early stuff and the viking stuff) but i'm as false as they come so grain of salt. much respect for venom, tho, troo originators indeed

Karl Malone, Saturday, 4 March 2017 23:17 (seven years ago) link

venom is what i thought punk sounded like before i ever heard punk

Karl Malone, Sunday, 5 March 2017 06:42 (seven years ago) link

I so hated Venom when I was first into metal because to me metal that ugly was just revolting but now that's why I love it so much. years, perspective, etc....

I had a friend who used to make fun of them forever and then realized he confused them with Poison the entire time.

waht, I am true black metal worrior (Neanderthal), Sunday, 5 March 2017 06:44 (seven years ago) link

The American or the German Poison?

Siegbran, Sunday, 5 March 2017 19:50 (seven years ago) link

American!

"Venom" and "POison" similar terms I guess it makes sense

This is so otm it's not even funny any more.

And yet, as much as I love Bathory (boy do they kick Venom's butt), the perfect follow-up to an intro like Storm of Damnation for me still is Lurker of Chalice's s/t. They wouldn't exist without Bathory but it's BM taken to a whole new level imo.

five months pass...

I met this cute girl at the Eyehategod show on Monday. she introduced herself because she was sitting at the table near me, we hit it off, started flirting before she disappeared to the front of the stage later in the evening.

She had a Venom patch on her jean jacket. ergo, Venom wins.

brimstead, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 00:46 (five years ago) link

I had no idea that Jonas Åkerlund, who directed Lords of Chaos, was Bathory's drummer from 1983 to 1984.

Bathory but Venom is underrated, especially latter-day stuff

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 22 March 2019 10:29 (five years ago) link

It's true, the first two Venom albums are worthy of all the praise of course but there's very solid (and varied) material in the later albums. A lot of chaff tho.

I hate Viking Bathory so that's a point for Venom

Colonel Poo, Friday, 22 March 2019 11:36 (five years ago) link

Bathory is slightly more important, probably.
I listen to Venom slightly more often personally.

Early Bathory are way more inspiring to me, where I feel like I'm hearing the seed of black metal's potentiality. I don't quite get the same feeling from Venom.

jmm, Friday, 22 March 2019 15:36 (five years ago) link

Under the Sign of the Black Mark is one of my favorite albums of all time. Love the first two Venom albums too, but Bathory for me.
