i caught the last couple seconds of a manson vid on tv yesterday, my dad was in the room. "is that marilyn manson?" he asked - there was almost a genial familiarity w manson implied in the tone of the question. he seems to be in a more interesting/fruitful(/fruity) place than most other post-SHOCK foax.

The singles off of Mechanical Animals were solid. And the new one with the cheerleaders, that's solid too. The others are boring metal sludge-fests.

I think MM is a severely underestimated singles artist: "Disposable Teens" was amazing, I hated the vocals on his version "Sweet Dreams" but still couldn't resist the early-Depeche-Mode beat, and "The Beautiful People" has this fucking awesome Laibach-gone-pop groove. Which is the main thing about Marilyn Manson: he's listened really hard to a lot of records that are very common currency in goth circles, but which never cracked the mainstream. His genius is in recycling stuff that most people won't notice has been recycled.

He's great! And silly, but listening to shitty shitty radio makes me think pop music needs more people like him. He's some of the 1% of current rock I wouldn't turn off.

My girlfriend got his new album. It's pretty good, but the dvd short film that comes with it is like the final project one of his fans would turn in at the end of his first semester in film school if he had a $2,000 budget, with the audio track consisting of 'spoken word' selections from his notebook written on silver ink on black paper (or BLACK INK).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 14:21 (twenty years ago) link

That said, when I watched Resident Evil, I thought his soundtrack was pretty great.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 11 September 2003 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

He did the soundtrack for "Resident Evil"? ROCKIN'!

_Mechanical Animals_ is and always will be my Marilyn Manson album. That was the first one where I felt like the music and persona meshed instead of clashing. Beyond that, I do like a lot of his singles (some retroactively; I hated "The Beautiful People" for the longest time until one day it just MADE SENSE).

(Describing the album tracks on _MA_ as "boring metal sludge-fests" makes me assume you haven't actually listened to them.)

In a development that shocks the foundation of ILx, nay, the WORLD to its core...I agree completely with Dan.

Marilyn and I, a love story.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 September 2003 14:47 (twenty years ago) link

use other suggestions please: trife, Have you listened to much Bowie? He has the same melodrama and occasionally better grooves... I like him bettter than 99% of rock bands/artists, anyway

fav MM songs:
Dope Hat
I Put A Spell On You
Beautiful People
Apple of Sodom
Dope Show
there he lost my attention

this picture rules, though, haha

i love mm's tunes, but do you think his new video's have lost a slight bit of novelty to them? i, too, totally agree with dan, if my opinion counts :)

ryan hoffman, Thursday, 11 September 2003 16:21 (twenty years ago) link

Mechanical Animals seemed to be an exciting step forward, but since then I just feel he's regressed. Pretty good singles artist, though.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 11 September 2003 17:28 (twenty years ago) link

Mechanical Animals was definately the best. I agree with most of what's being said here; great recycler, good singles artist, etc.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:27 (twenty years ago) link

i love his stuff pre Holy Wood.

IMO, one of the not so obvious reasons for his success in his earlier career was the depth of the imagery, which appealed to fans looking for something to escape into. (just like tolkien and star trek fans) He borrowed from alot of rich sources in the beginning (weird kids movies on portrait, biblical and "gothic" images on antichrist, glam futurism on mechanical animals) and i think the reason im not so into his recent stuff is because he has run out of sets of imagery to steal. mech. animals has some goddamn great songs.

mini search, trying not to do obvious ones here:
user friendly
the reflecting god
cryptorchid
cake and sodomy

i used to run with the manson fans in high school.
what would they say if they saw me now with fiddy cent, justin timberlake and neptunes beats over-populating my playlist?

astroblaster (astroblaster), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

'indie guilt!!'

trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:43 (twenty years ago) link

mechanical animals had some amazing pop songs on it. I think MM got too worried that he was going to lose his base after the album got him alot of props and attention so he regressed, which is a damn shame.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 11 September 2003 18:54 (twenty years ago) link

The only album I have and have really heard is the latest, The Golden Age Of The Grotesque. For about 2/3s of the way through it's quite enjoyable in an Electric Six/Rob Zombie kind of disco-metal/clowny big talk way. Plenty of songs better than the goddamn "Dope Show." The cabaret influence is quite nice, but it's way too long though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 11 September 2003 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

if anyones still interested, id love to do a C/D on some individual songs.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:52 (twenty years ago) link

how about my picks from earlier starting with "user friendly" from Mechanical Animals

astroblaster (astroblaster), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:48 (twenty years ago) link

I cannot share the anti-"Dope Show" hate, to my ears "We're all stars now/in the dope show" is one of the best pop-song heroin lines I've ever heard

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 12 September 2003 02:13 (twenty years ago) link

I don't remember why I used to dislike him, "Dope Show" is such a classic single.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 12 September 2003 02:28 (twenty years ago) link

I do remember why I disliked him for a long time: he copped fully half of his schtick from a dead friend of mine & gives no props

Back in 97 or 98 M.M. played Wheeling WV, and my friends went, and they made Steve Ching (Asian kid w/ baggy pants) strap Bone Warriors (Bop Bags, you know, big inflatable things that are weighted at the bottom w/ sand so you can punch'em and they'll sway back up, but these ones had skeletons on skeleton horses with swords and they were called 'Skull Force' and they were $1.99 at Big Lots) to his legs under his pants and then while inside the concert they inflated the Bone Warriors and lofted them onto the pit, and whilst singing, Marylin caught sight of one of them and stuttered.

They did the same thing at Lollapalooza and knocked a girl out while DEVO was playing. Cause Bone Warriors are heavy. When thrown.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Friday, 12 September 2003 03:57 (twenty years ago) link

he copped fully half of his schtick from a dead friend of mine

But was it that friend necessarily or ultimately Alice Cooper? Though I agree Alice was never quite so confrontational on certain points as was RW.

I don't own any MM cds but I saw him open for Sabbath a few years back and damn, he is a for real rock star on stage. I like his videos too, especially the one with the Godess Bunny (sp?). I'm not quite a fan but MM is anything but dull.

I'll stick with Acid Bath by Alien Sex Fiend, thanks.

After Marilyn Manson’s longtime bassist Twiggy Ramirez (born Jeordie White) was accused of rape, the band has decided to let him go. Tonight, Manson tweeted a statement announcing his decision to part ways with White. “He will be replaced for the upcoming tour,” he wrote. “I wish him well.” See the tweet below. On October 21, Jessicka Addams of Jack Off Jill accused White of a violent rape during their romantic relationship in the ‘90s—read her full post on Facebook. At the time, Manson released a statement regarding the accusations, saying that he “knew nothing about these allegations until very recently” and that he was “saddened by Jessicka’s obvious distress.”

Sometimes I post on ILM. I haven't been here in a while, so, many of you probably won't remember me.

Not sure if this is the correct thread to post this, but the search function didn’t return any other threads.
(And please note that my post contains an attempt to post some web links/hyperlinks, and that feature on ILM doesn’t always work for my fairly old laptop, so I’m not sure if the links will post, but I hope they do.)

With the recent news of Manson’s stage injury & the rape allegations against Twiggy Ramirez, an additional recent important news story related to Marilyn Manson seems to have been overlooked at ILM, because it’s not on this thread (and I can’t find another ILM thread for it): The sad news that on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017, Scott Mitchell Putesky (AKA Daisy Berkowitz) died of cancer at age 49. RIP.

Since I didn’t see any mention of this on this thread, I didn’t know if there is some other thread I should be posting this on at ILM. (If so, please let me know.)

For those who are interested, here’s a news article about this: http://www.metalinjection.net/this-is-just-a-tribute/original-marilyn-manson-guitarist-scott-daisy-berkowitz-putesky-dead-at-49. There are quite a few such articles in many of the online publications (Rolling Stone, Washington Post, etc. Though, I think the Washington Post article might be behind a paywall.)

Here are some additional online articles, for those who are interested:

http://gkmen.com/2017/10/23/daisy-berkowitz-founding-member-of-marilyn-manson-has-died/

Sadly, this is real news, not fake news.

YouTube also has some tribute/memorial videos.

Maybe no one at ILM cares about this piece of news, and that’s why this is not mentioned on this thread. If so, that’s unfortunate, to say the least.
