they are a (take your pick) safe/tame/mild version of the providence/brooklyn noise-rock axis. they take less chances = have more appeal (they play slower, embrace just a touch more melody)... give me parts and labor over oneida.

To say nothing of the money we spent on geting "EOTO" just so. I guess cursory examination reveals nothing special but go deep with them. They're not the kind of band whose appeal is evident after one or two listens.

as for parts and labor -- they definitely have something going on, though going somewhere different than Oneida. parts and labor definitely have potential, though i dont think all their pieces are together yet. the primary difference is see between oneida and parts and labor, though, is the garage thing, the striata of mudhoney etc that free floats in what Oneida is doing.

I think some of their tunes sound not unlike spastik early Sebadoh (esp. some of Gaffneys strange tunes), with a better production. Mind you, I doubt this is a comparison that they would want to have levied upon them.
I'm heading to Bloomington on a CD binge/purge in a few days and probably will search out another Oneida album.

Newsonic is a pretty odd space. I think it's a Wesleyan thing. Don't know the people, but they used to have lots of art-music type events. But also heavy on the Shy Child/El Guapo axis. I remember low ceilings and carpeting and lots of Jews outside. Lots of Jews inside as well, but considerably less observant.

To our friends and fans: Oneida drummer Kid Millions is in the hospital in Los Angeles following a serious car crash. He is expected to make a full recovery but will be unable to play for some time. (1/3)— Oneida (@oneida_official) March 2, 2018

in better news, just got wind of this:
CHARNEL GROUND is a meeting of Chris Brokaw (Come/Codeine/The New Year etc). on electric guitar, James McNew (Yo La Tengo, Dump) on bass, and Kid Millions (Oneida/Man Forever/etc) on drums, dedicated to exploring the outer and inner regions of instrumental rock music. 'Charnel Ground' was recorded in Brooklyn NY in 2016, and informed and dedicated to pivotal transitions.

Had dinner with him once when a friend was involved in an early Man Forever piece (the one with the 1/2 hour long single-stroke roll, which was great), just a super nice and genuine dude.

The annals of Jagjaguwar have most unfortunately left a lot of cherished albums and projects from our catalogue long out of print on wax. Others are in need of a first-ever, proper vinyl pressing. The Jagjaguwar Reissue Series seeks to right these wrongs. The cornerstone alumni and albums upon which the House of Jag today stands can now reach new hearts and minds wherever turntables keep turning.

Previously, Oneida pushed further into abstract sounds, recording compositions that couldn’t have been more different than the hammering anthems of their past. They return with 'Success', their most guitar-centric, rock album in decades.https://oneida.bandcamp.com/album/success

Digging all three songs out so far, "Rotten" dropped yesterday:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWl1XSNT1Q
Guessing there must be some long jams yet to be unleashed on the new one, 3 of the 7 songs have been released and they only total about 12 minutes.

"Paralyzed" is almost 11 minutes and there are two others at more than seven. The record is really on it, a total surprise for AOTY that no one will realize until all the ballots are in.

Sane for me. I am always glad they are doing stuff, and find things to enjoy alright about the more recent albums, but they don't work for me like the first run of albums with the original lineup (and the albums post-Papa C that were trio records).

Still loving the new one, it's so great.
Mildly annoyed by Secretly Canadian with their distribution, ordered the Steel Rod EP and Happy New Year from them back in August, the two main holes in my Oneida collection and hadn't had any luck stumbling across copies in the wild. Every time I check back in I get a response about the items being "delayed coming from the warehouse", which fine, but creeping up on three months for older catalog titles they insist they have in stock seems like a long time. Mostly just annoyed that since I placed the order I've, naturally, came across a copy of each that I didn't buy because they were supposedly on the way.
Anyway, venting over, back to Success!
