The Chemical Brothers owe the old boy some money for nicking his sound (check out 99%), of course Jack was beyond that by the time the Chems started selling records.

I thought Jack Dangers pulled off bringing in some jazz ringers like Bennie Maupin, which is something some of the other electronic producers tried to do with less success (like Carl Craig).

I read in some interview back then that there are hidden samples in the music that can only be heard by putting the headphone jack in half way due to some weird phasing thing. Never could figure that out though.

I stand by Actual Sounds + Voices being the best album... so far, it's the peak of the ultra dense, spacey, and floor-shaking elements done best... although if I could vote for half-releases, Subliminal Sandwich: Disc 2 would be the winner.

Storm The Studio often tops it though, just because i go back to it the most, and it was a cornerstone release for me... (it saved me from Wax Trax/EBM conundrum)

99% is probably my fave too. But everything is good, really. RUOK was underrated, had a few terrific tracks--"Spinning Round" is esp. noteworthy. The latest, At the Center, is pretty righteous also. All jazzy and such.

"Storm the Studio" is totally essential. Probably my favorite MBM record. I interviewed him when I was fanboy freshman in college and he was a pretty nice guy too. So who's heard the recent synth stuff? Worth checking out? I am curious . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, there's the jazzy Off Centre.. and I've noticed some 12" remixes of that stuff. Is the latter what you're talking about, Drew? Or has there been very recent MBM/Jack dangers material?

(I also interviewed Jack, though backstage during the Organic 1996 festival in Arrowbear, CA.. he was really down-to-earth and great.. My interview got interrupted often by Loop Guru being really noisy at their "press conference" backstage... ugh.)

99% is so freakin classic

I'm thinking of the double CD called "Loudness Clarifies" that Jack Dangers put out recently- anybody heard it? I am curious. It's supposedly documenting a really rare synth he owns (I think).

Satyricon or 99% is the best overall album. Armed Audio Warfare has great production but vocals more annoying/dated. Radio Babylon is my favourite stand-alone tune.

MBM remix of Depeche Mode's Rush is great.

Pop is superior to all other genres (DL), Tuesday, 8 March 2011 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link

go in this order

99%
Storm The Studio
Satyricon
Subliminal Sandwich
Actual Sounds and Voices
Armed Audio Warfare
anything else
R.U.O.K.

"R.U.O.K."

^ is this what fans/critics said to MBM when they heard this album? lol

kind of

it's not that it's bad as much as it is... well, that album is not why I like MBM

Storm The Studio is the most aggressive / revolutionary & the one that made the deepest impression on me
99% is not as 100% as the former but it's more polished, flows more smoothly as an album -- remarkably out there and incredibly distinct sound
Satyricon kicks the speed for pot, trippier & mellower interludes, less noise more dub, more variety, singing gets more melodic which opens up the music for some listeners while leaving others behind, really well done pop album
Subliminal Sandwich is where the vocabulary of traditional dub music overwhelms the noise innovation -- sprawling 2 CD album, first disc with the 'songs', second disc with the immersive instrumentals. expertly done if not as much my thing, though 'Electric People' on disc 2 = as good as any of it
Actual Sounds And Voices tries to pull together the diversity of the previous one into a single flowing album, not pushing it forward but bringing it together

Storm The Studio LP / mp3 edition - has 'Strap Down Part 3', left off the CD
Armed Audio Warfare = compilation of pre-Storm The Studio tracks, even noisier, all over the place but good
NOW 5" CD single - fantastic dub remixes from 99%
Original Fire - odd and ends compilation released right after Subliminal, has Storm The Studio outtake "I Got The Fear Part 5"

Albums since then are completely quality works but not as distinctive as the first two which I still listen to, people are still catching up to what he did on those two

well, the saturday line up is rather f*cking fantastic.
sometimes i hate the uk festival scene as we would never ever get such brilliant all in one place.

just done my first headphone listen to this with my new cans, and damn was it special.

Where to start? I would say by watching Emergency Broadcast Network videos on Youtube. Jack Dangers produced all their music, if I recall correctly.

I'm starting to think Subliminal Sandwich is their most underrated album but that's mostly because I'm listening to "Nuclear Bomb"

Karl Havoc (DJP), Monday, 12 July 2021 17:44 (two years ago) link

I agree! 99% and Satyricon are all-time for me, but I find myself pulling Subliminal Sandwich more often.
