1) Now that he's out on bail in less than 24 hours (which is ridiculous in itself), before trial, Spector flees to Brazil
2) Or after the trial, Spector flees to France (they won't extradite, especially if a person is facing the death penalty)
3) We can be assured of a drawn out expensive travesty of a trial that the people of California cannot afford to pay for
4) We can be assured the murder victim's reputation will be dragged through the mire while Spector is presented as merely mad as a hatter
5) Resulting most likely in a reduced manslaughter charge and he's out of the celebrity happy camp in less than six years.

― keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:41 (twenty-one years ago) link
But best to avoid even watching celebrity trials on court tv lest you become cynical too early on in life.
Blake and Spector haven't many options now. Snoop likely won't invite either of them to make pornographic movies any time soon. Maybe they'll just straighten up and start up a fashion line together for murderously rich L.A. male celebrities. BS is too hokey a name for people of this stature, maybe Off (as in off the hook but not pred-a-porte)
What's next now for troubled but talented Spector? Is he likely to enroll in Michael Hutchence chair dancing school?

(2/5/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Phil Spector has been charged with the first-degree murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson, 40, of Los Angeles, who was allegedly shot and killed on Monday (February 3) at his mansion in Alhambra, California, an L.A. suburb.
The 62-year-old legendary record producer was arrested on Monday morning, then freed in the evening at $1 million bail. He faces arraignment on March 3 in an Alhambra court.
Police said they were called at about 5 a.m. by a limousine driver who reported hearing shots fired after he dropped off the couple at the gated estate. Officers arrived to find Clarkson shot, her body lying in the marble foyer of the mansion. She was pronounced dead and Spector was arrested.
Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators said Clarkson and Spector were the only people in the home at the time of the shooting. A gun was recovered on the scene, believed to be the murder weapon.
Clarkson's movie credits included producer Roger Corman's 1985 fantasy-adventure film, Barbarian Queen, which she had claimed inspired the popular TV series Xena, Warrior Princess. She also appeared in other pictures that includes 1988's Wizards Of The Lost Kingdom II and 1992's Barbarian Queen II: The Empress Strikes Back.
Spector is credited for creating the "wall of sound" and producing a slew of 1960s hits that include "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, "Da Doo Ron Ron" by the Crystals, and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers; as well as the Beatles' Let It Be album and recordings by John Lennon, George Harrison, Cher, and the Ramones. In 1989, Spector was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He received the Trustees Award from the Grammy Recording Academy in 2000 for his "significant contributions--other than performance--to the field of recording."
Known as a recluse, Spector bought the 33-room, castle-like mansion in 1998 for a reported $1.1 million. For many years, the music industry has been rife with tales of the famous producer allegedly brandishing firearms, even waving a pistol during recording sessions, including claims of such by members of the Ramones and the late John Lennon.
Attorney Robert Shapiro, once part of the legal team that defended O.J. Simpson against murder charges, is representing Spector.

Phil's last interview?
whether it is or not, it's an illuminating read:
"For years he did nothing. He was incapable of action. Paralysed. Projects came and went, unfulfilled. What could possibly interest him? Disco? "Terrible." Michael Jackson? "The most depressing, heinous thing. I mean, starting out life as a black man and ending up as a white woman, what's that all about?" Rap music? "Like the c got left off at the printers." Spector falls back on the sofa. "It's all been done! It's all been done!"

"Mamet, the writer, has publicly stated that he feels Phil Spector is innocent and should not be in prison," says spokesman Ed Lozzi. "We fear that he will rewrite history and portray Lana Clarkson as responsible for her own death. That is not acceptable, and if he does so, there will be consequences from us."

One ILM poster friend of mine has noted previously that Mamet has an uncommon talent for finding ways to justify women getting slapped around in his movies/plays.
Nah, that's not true, but he does have a good half-dozen scripts with false rape accusations, and this story is a variation on that.
That said, I liked it. Lots of Pacino time.
