man, bad week for phil: first he gets wiped from Let it Be, then he kills a lady.

could this mean we've been spared the concept of the next Vines and Starsailor albums being produced by the man?

(sorry, bad taste i know)

He was always crazy and misogynistic, so I guess this shouldn't be so shocking. But he also made a lot of records I love, so I hope it turns out not to be true.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 3 February 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Was there ever a time he wasn't unhinged? I know it sounds awful, but I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

I wonder what this'll do to Cameron Crowe's long-awaited Spector biopic: last I read CC said all the script needed was an ending. I guess he's got it.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 00:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Honestly, I'm surprised it took him this long to actually shoot somebody. Reading his bio ("He's a Rebel" - great book) it makes this kind of career-capping scandal look inevitable.

Actually, it would've been more appropriate if he had kept the body interred and preserved in a state of ghostly perfection in a crypt on his estate...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nik Cohn's essay on Spector in that big Rolling Stone history is as haunting and powerful as rock journalism gets: I first read it when I was 15 and it blew me away. This was before I'd heard any of the records. I'm still reeling from the news: I always knew Phil was crazy but this is still a hard thing to take about a long-time hero of yours.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 00:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm a huge huge Spector fan - got the boxed set, a Ronettes collection, his Beatles/post-Beatles solo work, the Ramones record, his sole Yoko Ono production ("Season of Glass") - but you've got to separate the man from the work. One is not the other. And if you follow his personal history, the man is clearly completely fucking bonkers, and has been ever since his dad offed himself when he was a kid.

Got a link to that Rolling Stone article...? I've never seen it.

too funny!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

If I remember correctly, Joe Meeks did the decent thing afterwards and offed himself. The only thing that's going to happen here are any of the following rich L.A. entertainment figure in trouble with the law scenarios:

1) Now that he's out on bail in less than 24 hours (which is ridiculous in itself), before trial, Spector flees to Brazil

2) Or after the trial, Spector flees to France (they won't extradite, especially if a person is facing the death penalty)

3) We can be assured of a drawn out expensive travesty of a trial that the people of California cannot afford to pay for

4) We can be assured the murder victim's reputation will be dragged through the mire while Spector is presented as merely mad as a hatter

5) Resulting most likely in a reduced manslaughter charge and he's out of the celebrity happy camp in less than six years.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 04:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't find the Cohn article online. It's in the Jim Miller-edited Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll, well worth getting. Try to find the original, if you can: the more recent update cut some good but outdated pieces in favor of some less interesting ones. (I think it was Anthony DeCurtis who did the editing on that version, which might explain why they dropped one of Bangs's essays...)

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

6) he gets off, celebrities don't go to jail unless they shoplift, murder is no big deal.

what if his trial coincides with robert blake's? will court tv need to do a split screen?

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 05:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think murder is a big deal.

But best to avoid even watching celebrity trials on court tv lest you become cynical too early on in life.

Blake and Spector haven't many options now. Snoop likely won't invite either of them to make pornographic movies any time soon. Maybe they'll just straighten up and start up a fashion line together for murderously rich L.A. male celebrities. BS is too hokey a name for people of this stature, maybe Off (as in off the hook but not pred-a-porte)

What's next now for troubled but talented Spector? Is he likely to enroll in Michael Hutchence chair dancing school?

NEWS - Spector Charged With First-Degree Murder Of B-Movie Actress

(2/5/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Phil Spector has been charged with the first-degree murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson, 40, of Los Angeles, who was allegedly shot and killed on Monday (February 3) at his mansion in Alhambra, California, an L.A. suburb.

The 62-year-old legendary record producer was arrested on Monday morning, then freed in the evening at $1 million bail. He faces arraignment on March 3 in an Alhambra court.

Police said they were called at about 5 a.m. by a limousine driver who reported hearing shots fired after he dropped off the couple at the gated estate. Officers arrived to find Clarkson shot, her body lying in the marble foyer of the mansion. She was pronounced dead and Spector was arrested.

Los Angeles County sheriff's investigators said Clarkson and Spector were the only people in the home at the time of the shooting. A gun was recovered on the scene, believed to be the murder weapon.

Clarkson's movie credits included producer Roger Corman's 1985 fantasy-adventure film, Barbarian Queen, which she had claimed inspired the popular TV series Xena, Warrior Princess. She also appeared in other pictures that includes 1988's Wizards Of The Lost Kingdom II and 1992's Barbarian Queen II: The Empress Strikes Back.

Spector is credited for creating the "wall of sound" and producing a slew of 1960s hits that include "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes, "Da Doo Ron Ron" by the Crystals, and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers; as well as the Beatles' Let It Be album and recordings by John Lennon, George Harrison, Cher, and the Ramones. In 1989, Spector was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He received the Trustees Award from the Grammy Recording Academy in 2000 for his "significant contributions--other than performance--to the field of recording."

Known as a recluse, Spector bought the 33-room, castle-like mansion in 1998 for a reported $1.1 million. For many years, the music industry has been rife with tales of the famous producer allegedly brandishing firearms, even waving a pistol during recording sessions, including claims of such by members of the Ramones and the late John Lennon.

Attorney Robert Shapiro, once part of the legal team that defended O.J. Simpson against murder charges, is representing Spector.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have, but I gave my copy away and it's out of print, I think. I bet we can expect an updated bio or two within the next year.

Ronnie's book is worth reading too: there's a ton of copies of that one in almost every used bookstore I've been to lately.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I heard that Spector sued Ribowsky, the author, and that subsequent editions were expurgated. There's surprisingly little dirt out there about Spector, and you have a lot of people who have made statements and retracted them. I'm wondering if we'll find a lot more out now that he's vulnerable.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

To clarify, I'm saying I think the publicity attending celebrity show trials is a disservice to everyone.

Phil's last interview?

whether it is or not, it's an illuminating read:

"For years he did nothing. He was incapable of action. Paralysed. Projects came and went, unfulfilled. What could possibly interest him? Disco? "Terrible." Michael Jackson? "The most depressing, heinous thing. I mean, starting out life as a black man and ending up as a white woman, what's that all about?" Rap music? "Like the c got left off at the printers." Spector falls back on the sofa. "It's all been done! It's all been done!"

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 13:39 (eleven years ago) link

"Mamet, the writer, has publicly stated that he feels Phil Spector is innocent and should not be in prison," says spokesman Ed Lozzi. "We fear that he will rewrite history and portray Lana Clarkson as responsible for her own death. That is not acceptable, and if he does so, there will be consequences from us."

What, are you going to shoot him then?

They're going to send him the 3LP box concept album by Godley & Creme.

Nah, that's not true, but he does have a good half-dozen scripts with false rape accusations, and this story is a variation on that.
