this one gets a dud from me... i can't remember why, but i had a pretty intense negative reaction to it.

Mellow Candle's interesting but not my favorite Clodagh

her vocals at the end of Mike Oldfield's Hergest Ridge & Incantations are about 70% of what make those records such a part of my life -- the very end of Hergest in particular is like getting to watch yourself drown (in a good way)

and the Fovea Hex eps are beautiful, production & treatments by Hafler Trio & Eno + more, but all at the service of the songs, it's absurd they're being released as expensive limited edition eps but it's the kind of thing where they want to make sure that only the people who really care are getting to them

Thanks for the Oldfield recs, Milton. The Fovea Hex stuff is quite special. I hope at some point those EPs are compiled to make longer discs. I think I could do without the Andrew MaKenzie remixes. Part of what I liked about them was that the sound is tightly coiled and very effervescent all at once.

the third ep isn't out yet -- I've got the first two already burned to one disc, I couldn't wait, they already sound more like one album than two distinct eps. I like the McKenzie drone burner remix, just not as often as the songs.

Drew refrained from the self-plug but her appearence on the Matmos 'For Alan Turing' ep is also wonderful. Even if you think you've already heard 'Molly Malone' too many times you probably haven't heard the electronic, clipped out space music soma version yet.

listening to Incantations again now, her voice really is unbelievable. Fovea Hex debuted live as a trio a few weeks ago, I hear they were a very different beast with two younger singers out front and Clodagh in back with the piano, I hope they can play a few more shows.

Mellow Candle is great.

I wonder what the context of Gygax's comment upthread was.
The cultural climate of ILX, and SF, and NYC at the time.
What jeans he was wearing.

RIP.

By The Glacial Lake

Everybody knows that time can stretch a bit between one Fovea Hex release and the next (and more on that very soon....) but here's a bit of a treat for us all.

Just recently, Peter Chilvers, who is best known for creating the iOS apps Bloom, Trope and Scape with Brian Eno, and who has also toured with Karl Hyde (Underworld), delivered a beautiful remix of By The Glacial Lake, an archival song by Clodagh Simonds, which last appeared on NOT ALONE, the Médecins Sans Frontières compilation curated by Mark Logan and Current 93’s David Tibet in 2006.

We have made both versions of the song available for free download from the Fovea Hex Bandcamp: https://foveahex.bandcamp.com/album/the-glacial-lake

Both tracks are also available on Youtube:
