hi, i am curious how the AIM app works as i cannot try any of this stuff out until i get home. someone who has installed 2.0 and succeeded in downloading an app, please let me know how it works. this seems to be a thread regarding S/D iphone apps, thanks!

WHY HAVE SOME ROUNDED CORNERS AND OTHERS NOT

DG, Thursday, 10 July 2008 15:59 (fifteen years ago) link

oh and download firmware 2.0 now apparently

DG, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Every time I select something, iTunes recenters itself on my screen.

libcrypt, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:02 (fifteen years ago) link

"caek, really are you that much of a dick"

No. You seem to have a v. sandy vagina today. This was far from obvious from your original question, which asked something else entirely. Seriously, how AIM works on iPhone is actually interesting and relevant to this thread, so that's what I thought you were getting at. I got your lovely "ON IPHONE" response when I attempted to clarify and a "thanks for nothing" after I spent a few minutes scrubbing through the keynote video looking for the section I thought you were looking for. So The Google link was in response to you being aggressive and ungrateful toward to a genuine attempt to answer your question. I think you'll live though.

the new itunes remote program sounds amazing, and something I've wanted (and probably posted about on ILX somewhere) for years.

aim app only works while running. You give it yr details once, it remembers them. Tabbed interface -- buddies, statuses and live I'm conversations. It's pretty neat.

Nnw is a disappointment. Offline Reading is nice, but UI not polished, no control over feeds, no unified, poor browser. Very 1.0

iTunes remote is fucking awesome.

Facebook app won't sign in, ffs.

All the book readers are rubbish.

stet, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

thanks, stet.

caek, i don't see how you were being anything but purposefully obtuse. obviously, i was asking how the official AIM client works on the iphone, from someone who has used it. if my sandy vagina is clouding my vision then i must be mistaken.

cutty, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I wouldn't say you were obviously asking for first-hand experience with AIM on the iPhone; I assumed you wanted PR-speak "this is how it works"-type hype info, as well.

HI DERE, Thursday, 10 July 2008 16:52 (fifteen years ago) link

what is itunes remote?

does AIM use push?

czn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i'd bl-app

caek, i don't see how you were being anything but purposefully obtuse. obviously, i was asking how the official AIM client works on the iphone, from someone who has used it.

I took "how does it work" to mean, y'know, "how does it work" not "how is it to use". Apparently you meant the latter. I wasn't being obtuse.

caek, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

whatever dudes

how do I shot 2.0 fmwre on unlocked iphone? : (

czn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Apple's free Remote Application (iTunes Link) is also available and allows you to "control the music on your computer or Apple TV from your iPod touch or iPhone. Play, pause, skip, shuffle. See your songs, playlists, and album art on your iPod touch or iPhone as if you were right in front of your computer. Remote works with your Wi-Fi network, so you can control playback from anywhere in and around your home."

oooh that is cool!

czn, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't used the itunes remote app yet (soon I hope!) but from what I've read, it lets you display and play from your computer's itunes library on your iphone/ipod touch. It does it over wifi.

xpost yes that's better put

Euler, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:32 (fifteen years ago) link

All the book readers are rubbish.

damn! do any of them at least let you skip to a given page in a pdf? i'd settle for that, really.

AIM will use the push-style stuff, but only when that goes live in september, i believe.

toby, Thursday, 10 July 2008 17:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeh push isn't live yet. Toby I've got one more to try that might.

iTunes remote is the killer though. AirTunes has needed it since launch.

stet, Thursday, 10 July 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

really looking forward to trying that one out when i go back in, i have to say [and also looking forward to having home internet again so i don't have to keep going outside to download apps etc].

2.0 running now, just tried the facebook app. might well make my first actual purchase in a minute (mlb.com).

remote control is surprisingly great. Somehow much more satisfying than I imagined, and good that search is in there.

toby, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:04 (fifteen years ago) link

am i to understand that you can use your iphone to search your computer's itunes library, and then play/pause etc the songs on that computer?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:12 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i'd buy it for that alone!!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Yep, exactly.

It's like Salling Clicker did years ago, except it rocks.

stet, Friday, 11 July 2008 00:15 (fifteen years ago) link

the remote is simply awesome--same interface as the ipod function ON IPHONE

AIM i'm not too pleased with--what's the point if it's not persistent and logs you off everytime the phone goes to sleep? (ON IPHONE)

cutty, Friday, 11 July 2008 01:01 (fifteen years ago) link

It's good when yr bored and in one place, though. The non-persistance isn't their fault, though, Apple won't let apps run in the background. Notifications will sort that, though.

stet, Friday, 11 July 2008 01:06 (fifteen years ago) link

though ON IPHONE though

Evernote for iPhone is incredible, I'm also enjoying Twitterrific and Remote, I'm somewhat intrigued by Whrrl and will likely end up buying OmniFocus.

anyone heard of Mobdro? it's absolutely blowing my mind. streaming tv with basically everything you could want. i'm old and out of touch so more than likelyit's either a) well known/passe, or b) malware/trojan or something

rip van wanko, Friday, 6 January 2017 21:23 (seven years ago) link

c) both ;)

As far as I know, it's as safe as the next unauthorised app. Lots (and lots) of people use it though with little (if any) reported problems.

groovypanda, Friday, 6 January 2017 22:56 (seven years ago) link

Not been able to find it in the App Store? Only something called mobdro but for music only? Confusing.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 6 January 2017 23:54 (seven years ago) link

There's a few different apps called that in the store, I'm curious which one you're using?

his eye is on despair-o (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 7 January 2017 01:33 (seven years ago) link

It's not in the app store. I just searched mobdro app and downloadEd from a mirror
It's been pretty great so far.

Mobdro apk, not app

rip van wanko, Saturday, 7 January 2017 08:42 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, you'll have to sideload it as it's banned by Apple and Google.

I bought a $2 alarm clock app in which I can "record" the steps I take to my kitchen (coffee pot) and the alarm is supposed to ring until I get up and walk there each morning, but it doesn't work properly. Anyone got a good alarm clock app that does GPS well?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 16 January 2017 19:59 (seven years ago) link

do smartphone GPS's work well enough to reliably/consistently measure, like, several feet? In my experience there's always been a several-meters margin of error but I haven't fucked w/ anything in a few years so ymmv

I have a big apartment, so it's a good 30 steps! I just want something that knows I am no longer in my bed. I can do math while half asleep and turn off those quiz-based alarms easily :(
I fell asleep at a PJ Harvey concert once, I am a champion sleeper

Had a thought this morning that I should start checking ebooks out of the library, and managed to do so over lunch via the OverDrive app. Pretty easy process and works great. Any other good library-associated ebook readers out there?

Overdrive now has an app called Libby that looks kind of charming and easy to use.

The NYPL has something called SimplyE that is pretty bad.

Why would you need an app for that? I find the native Notes app to be more than adequate.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 18 August 2020 15:51 (three years ago) link

OCR, automatic file naming etc.

If you use it like once a month then notes is fine. If you’re trying to go fully paperless it is not up to the job.

I don't want to speak for everyone, I have both models of the newest iphones (and before that an ancient SE) and have never encountered a problem!

Just table some anecdotal input on the native app tally for me.
