I've got a razr. Do these people have names attached to their entries in the address book? Mine come up automatically on the external screen once a name is entered.

Laura H. (laurah), Friday, 24 March 2006 02:22 (eighteen years ago) link

my wife got me one of these last year. it's fine. smaller than my old nokia clunker. there's a bunch of multimedia stuff about it that i haven't tried to figure out and may well be annoying if i tried to use it, but for making phone calls and being reasonably easy to carry around, i've got no complaints.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 24 March 2006 02:22 (eighteen years ago) link

V3 just came out last week from RAZR fixing the above mentioned problems.

biz, Friday, 24 March 2006 02:23 (eighteen years ago) link

its flimsy as fuck, the keypad is shitty and has major issues, the hardware is faulty, the oem screen is slow, buggy and so is the bluetooth compatability. (seriously notice the delay time between opening up the phone and when the oem screen actually appears.) the thing is so flimsy that most things that break it void the warrenty and then the cheapest repair is like $200. its got like no memory compared to other phones way cheaper. it doesnt tell you how many missed calls you have. the phonebook functionality is awful, shit like you have to type in the full first name to fine a contact... i can go on and if you like.

seriously though this phone kicks ass. its like a kick in the face t the rzr. the samsung a900 "the blade"!!:

i paid 59 dollars for my RAZR, how much is the Samsung? that wasn't an option at the cingular store so i don't know if it's available for that service. i wasn't thrilled to get the RAZR but i'm happy with it so far. of course the Samsung ripped off the design but i do dislike the keypad on the RAZR.

don't want to seem like a RAZR cheerleader cuz i just got it a week ago, but so far i've not seen any delay on opening the phone and seeing the oem screen. it's instantly there when i open the phone. also, i've not come across any errors or problems with the keypad. It's a crappy interface but everything works as it should. also, you say they're flimsy. i completely don't see that criticism. they're heavy, metal and very well constructed in relation to my last phone. i'm no cell phone afficianodo (or speller) but it feels solid and has worked perfectly for the last week. haven't tried any bluetooth bizness yet and probably won't. those asswhipes with the headsets look so ridiculous and annoy the shit out of me, plus, i was born with 2 hands, 1 to hold the phone, the other to hold the coffee or my dick. it works well.

biz, Friday, 24 March 2006 02:35 (eighteen years ago) link

my razr is a total step up from the horrible old candybar i had before, but still its featureset might not be great compared to others? the bluetooth is sorta slow (but i don't know if any is faster? no basis for comparison) and i customized it so the turning bluetooth on menu is easy to get to so i can sync fast with computer. the camera resolution is good enough for a frikin phone since, i mean, i'm not much of a pictures person anyway. the fact of bluetooth at all is awesome and new to me is the thing + also the mp3 ringtone feature is great even if i haven't gotten around to really using it yet.

its not v. responsive with the one game i dled but i don't really play cell games anyway so it doesn't matter.

my big objection -- NO FUCKIN STOPWATCH. How the hell did they miss this? i found some java app that does the job that i'm going to play with, but still, of all the things not to bother to put on.

the keypad is plenty responsive, i find + the all metal thing is nice coz my phone (folded) gets quite a bit of banging even tho i'm hella careful with it when i'm using it.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 24 March 2006 04:15 (eighteen years ago) link

The A900 is just as bad as the RAZR in my experience. The phone is crappy, the menus and keys are slow to respond, missed calls don't just show up when I open the phone (like every other phone I've ever had). It really sucks as a phone.

OTOH, it seems to be indestructible and it was free. And my "Guns of Brixton" ringtone sounds good on it.

sidekick doesnt side open, it flip tops. i tried to win a blackberry at work yesterday (im contracting with a wireless company and its their lastest product) so i could complete the cellular holy trinity - a magenta razr, sidekick II and blackberry.
i like my razr plenty. that said, im not interested in using bluetooth or using it for web browsing, just calls, so its easy to forgive any technical shortcomings. what i dont like about it is the short video but thats my only real complaint. its a delight to look at and talk on. As for the original question, you dont use names on a razr, you use pictures. saves you all that annoying reading when someone calls.

i can't wait for my RAZR tomorrow!!! But then again I probably won't be using any functions other than phoning and sending txts. like. i already have a digicamera and an mp3 playah coming innit.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 24 March 2006 14:28 (eighteen years ago) link

The RAZR strikes me as a good boy phone because it's nice and flat for slipping into your pocket. Other phones cause a bulge, don't they? Also, any phone the comes with a free iPod has to be OK.

I have a Samsung D500, which is a great handbag phone - easy to grab from amongst the old bus tickets, lip glosses and other assorted junk.

in that new airplane show 'the loop', the main guy has a sidekick. for some reason theyve gone to the trouble to insert the sidekick sleep mode sound effect whenever he ends a call. its odd and distracting.

viva la RAZR! I got mine today. Still charging. It looks really pretty in black when it's closed. I don't know why they thought they wanted to put that silver keypad in there though. If it had just black keys it'd have been the best phone evar. Also: I'm still charging it so i haven't used it yet.

They look very flimsy but then all clamshell type phones look flimsy to me.

robster (robster), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I almost got one of these phones yesterday, but didn't when I realized that it didn't have the appropriate jack to line out and record conversations for interview transcription. I can't imagine why they wouldn't have that jack, because it's the same jack for any basic cell phone headset.

probably - it's just damn ugly and clunky (the interface that is) I don't like the keypad either, feels like it should have Victor Kyam advertising it.

and the battery life?? appalling

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 27 March 2006 12:50 (eighteen years ago) link

My flatmate used to moan about her Motorola and tell me it couldn't do obvious things that every phone ought to be able to do. I never really believed her, then my colleague at work moaned in a similar way about her (different) Motorola. I have come to the conclusion that they are rub.

i know three people who have returned razrs due to serious defects (no battery life; no display after a few minutes; phone unable to store any info). that was enough to scare me away from them, although these were all first wave purchasers so perhaps things have been fixed up a bit.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:16 (eighteen years ago) link

You had a nokia loyality?? thats like having a microsoft loyality. v. queer. maybe its different in the UK.
i dont know where you peeps are getting your razrs. the battery on mine lasts a good 3 or 4 days and although i only make a few calls on it a day, i sure mess around with it a lot. The keys are fine for me. Maybe its a problem for the chunky fingertipped. i dont know. i do tend to use my fingernails when dialing. Also, they arent flimsy at all. ive dropped mine in a carpark and stood on it twice and its just fine.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:37 (eighteen years ago) link

i have now sent two txts with the RAZR. i am happier with it now that i'm getting used to the spacebar not being the 0 key. I still haven't figured out how to put a fullstop after a word though (i seem to have to put in a space in between!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Nokia is VERY popular here - a lot of people HATE clamshell phones and Nokia basically looked and worked best until the Sony Ericsson phones came out. But I want a Carlos nokia.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I have a Nokia loyalty. It's just every other phone I've tried has a really annoying menu/interface, but then I haven't tried that many. I had a Samsung for about 3 days, but I hated it and replaced with, yes, a Nokia.

I haven't tried a Sony Ericsson though. My first phone was an Ericsson, but that was pre-Sony.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I've no problem with clamshells, but the Nokia interface always seems very consistent and ergonomic. Over manufaturers' menus seem a bit all over the place, design-wise.

But Nokia seem to have dropped the ball in terms of spec development.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:56 (eighteen years ago) link

From what I've seen of Samsungs, they seem to mimic the Nokia interface quite well.

there's an "opera mini" as well as an "opera mobile" -- the former uses a free proxy for webpage reduction (if you trust it) and so can run speedier and on less powerful phones.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Some phones have ringtone creators on them. It's rather fiddly.

With others, you could make a midi file or mp3 file (depending on what your handset can play) on a computer and then transfer it to your phone either by USB cable or by hosting it somewhere on the web and then pointing the WAP or other browser on your phone at it. If you have such things.

ok dudes, i dropped the razr in the toilet, and im not really all that sorry.

i need a new verizon-capable phone. id like to pay $150 or less (on ebay), but suggest irrespective of price - is anyone super-pumped about their phones? i hated the razr because it was too wide, the button response was poor, the camera had no flash, and it was really vulnerable to water damage (i got a replacement once, when one drop got into it and it blew up). any ideas?

BUT WAHT IS RONG W/ CDMA?? this is question.

I kno Vzn cripples fons, I have a Moto 815 which is a bit bulky but performs really well (an ANTENNA how QUAINT) and was the last generation of their phones to have a Moto UI instead of the mandated cross-manufacturer VZW one that they all have now. This means I can send myself little mp3s in a txt and the phone can save & use them as ringtones, something totally verboten now and forevermore.

Apparently CDMA is only in use in S.Korea as well, and the entire planet is on GSM? Except for, what Germany, which is TDMA? (T-Mobile in this country) how long can that last?
