actually what i think is actually dumbass is all the stupid outrage among boing boing types directed at theatre owners who won't book this. which is something i totally sympathize with

(the not-booking, not the outrage)

It was supposed to be released on Cuban's HDNet Movies, DVD and theatres all at the same time - but DVDs don't get restocked until Tuesday.

I found the relationships, and the realism they were presented with, stifling.

I like Adam a lot, obviously, but I have come to accept that he hates all of the movies that I like.

three weeks pass...
i saw this movie earlier today. i understand it was based on a true story but the acting was so hyper-realistic that it had me wondering if it was shot with some sort of documentary-style "technique" that locked in on and followed around three people from a doll factory in west virginia that are essentially LIVING BREATHING CLONES of the characters in interest in the story. it's a fascinating movie. it turns into a detective crime story before you have time to adjust to it originally being a "quirky" film about rural americana or some other cliche.

also the bob pollard soundtrack music was GREAT; beer-driven acoustic guitar chords moving into unexpected directions. it does a great job of providing this counter-weight to the seemingly depressing tone of the plot and setting.

oh yeah and i thought schizopolis was dumb silly art-school goofiness. this isn't like schizopolis, despite what the extremely weird and misleading trailer with all the doll heads and limbs in the factory would have you believe.

Apparently the reason the simultaneous release (DVD and Theater) was done is that the company did a study showing that while theater audience would decline sharply (something like 50%), the increase in DVD rentals and sales would way more than make up for the decline in theater sales. I can only assume this would have something to do with the more consolidated hype it would create -- in other words, when movie x comes out in the theaters only, there are a ton of people who aren't going to go see it but who might rent it. But the hype (ads, movie reviews, etc.) is all around the theater release and by the time it goes to DVD a lot of potential renters and buyers have forgotten about it.

Something strikes me as problematic about the plan though -- isn't it inherently bad to do massive financial damage to one's main channel of distribution and promotion, namely the theaters?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Saturday, 25 February 2006 14:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Not if there's a growing opportunity to sell DVDs, which are fast becoming the 'main' channel of distribution for a lot of tv/film. I believe this is also being released at the same time on HDNet (which is basically just another for-pay television channel, albiet a HD one).

I believe the company behind this (Mark Cuban et al?) is trusting that in the next couple years, people will continue watching films at home. If they can still get their work in front of people, any producer would be happy to forget about the high distribution cost of traditional theaters, no?

In any case, I'm going to have to check out the film itself...

fantastic technologic, Saturday, 25 February 2006 15:50 (eighteen years ago) link

i checked up on IMDB and my suspicions were correct: the actors casted weren't professional actors, they were people from the town in west virginia it was shot in. the casting agent was in a KFC drive-thru and overheard a supervisor training some new employees; she was casted. it's a pretty amazing movie, and only 73 minutes long!

Much better than I expected; I'm kinda worried about the whiff of 'looking down on the trailer folk' factor, which from S.S.'s commentary apparently infuriates him. I thought the nonactorish performances, particularly by the middle-aged antiheroine and the 19-year-old boy, were kind of amazing. The video interviews from which the actors were cast are somethin', you can see the qualities that appealed to him very much in evidence.

Kind of surprised that the writer is a woman, given that of the 3 leads the 2 women are shown (on different scales) to be the Morally Corrupt ones.

Revive because we're talking about sad melancholy GbV on the Alien Lanes poll thread. I saw this recently on Netflix and admired it. I wonder how much time Soderbergh spent scouting the area. The combination of hearing Pollard guitar with the visuals of that drive from Wheeling into eastern Ohio hit very close to home. I used to make that drive every year when going to undergrad. I don't think I'd be as big a fan of Guided by Voices as I am if i hadn't discovered them while going to college in Ohio.
