Oh that's nonsense. I think that some of the more outlandish plotlines (David's carjacking, Nate burying Lisa in the desert, and George's bomb shelter) pushed it a bit, but the more everyday stuff was pretty right on, especially everything having to do with Claire and Ruth.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 9 May 2005 14:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought the carjacking scene was a bit over the top until I heard a very very uncannily similar story occurring in Glasgow to a friend of mine. Not the same in crack and gasoline sense, but in a kidnapped>ATMs in various stores>no money left>taken to random abandoned place and nearly murdered way. Apparently the only thing that saved the dude was that he knew the passageway he was headed towards was going to dead end eventually, so he freaked out, cocked the guy in the face and ran away screaming.

Personally, I can't wait.

it's mashed potato time! (dymaxia), Monday, 9 May 2005 22:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's not so much that he got carjacked (depressingly common) so much as the execution was a little toooooooo much. I do like how that plot kinda hijacked the episode - apparently that's what they wanted, for it to be like a normal episode that suddenly takes a distressing turn. They pulled that off for sure.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:20 (eighteen years ago) link

The episode immediately following the carjacking ("Terror Begins At Home") is my second favorite episode of the series after "The Opening" from season 3.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh that's nonsense.

maybe, but among the people i know who watch the show it was the concensus.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, I promise you that all the art school stuff was definitely right on. Olivier is a caricature, sure, but all the stuff with Claire/Edie/Russell/Jimmy/Anita and the classroom scenes with lesbian teacher - totally OTM.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:29 (eighteen years ago) link

the art-school/Claire stuff was the only good part of last season. She (and her surrounding orbit) has really been the only character to keep me interested over the 2.25 seasons I've seen. Hate to go cliche, but she and her story/plotlines seem somewhat true, emotionally, where the rest are pained surrealism mixed with the-horrible-banality-of-modern-America stuff. Occasionally good but not routinely interesting.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:34 (eighteen years ago) link

The absolute worst thing in season 4 is when Rico has that totally awful sexual daydream with the Catholic imagery. Sooooooooooooooooo bad. Really, the entire Rico plotline was awful, but it was good that he ended up leaving his wife and moving in with the Fishers. That should be interesting for season 5 anyway.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 9 May 2005 23:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Can I just say YAY!!! I'm looking forward to Season 5, and even if 4 was a little over the top, I didn't find it too far beyond belief. I didn't really like the Michell Trachtenberg-as-Britney-Spears plotline though, that was kind of dumb.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I have to agree, the Britney subplot and subsequent affair with Keith was way more beyond the pale than the rest.

I think the only TV I've ever cried at in my life is the end of the first episode of Season 4, with the burial and all. My gf had also just unexpectedly decided to move away, too, so it was a bit about the timing, I suppose. But still gives me the chills.

Re-reading the earlier parts of the thread reminded me of how awful last season really was (and how much better this season is - and it seems to be getting even better).
The art school stuff was often preposterous - Claire's infatuation with Mena Suvari was ridiculous. Claire seems to be 3 or 4 different characters, depending on who wrote the episode.

But, yeah, this week's was great. The scene between Billy and George on the front stoop was somehow really moving.

Also, I can't get over my sudden fixation with Ileana Douglas after her cameo 2 eps ago. Jesus. So hot.

this season has been very good. there isn't much left of it though and I'm worried about what they're going to do with Nate and Maggie, that seems very rushed. She's cute and nice though.

Does anyone know whats happening with the availability of downloadable season 5 episodes? Apparently numerous fake and/or corrupted versions of the first few episodes have been circulating to try to prevent people from downloading and now I can't seem to find episode 7 anywhere, even though it originally aired on Sunday.

I would watch it on HBO if I could, of course.

it seems that no-one is watching it this season, you'd think hbo would be happy people are bothering at all....although they'll undoubtedly blame lack of viewers on the internet (and not their complete lack of publicity about this season)

I don't know, I think the quality has actually been fairly consistent from season 3 onward, aside from a few duds. I'm always going to be partial to the mid-period of this show.

But yeah, "Singing For Our Lives" is an instant classic. I'm excited to see how the final four are going to go down. Should be pretty intense.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 28 July 2005 13:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I really really really disagree with people about Claire. I think half the point of the character is that she kinda flits around in search of herself, and the frustration comes from when she retreats back to acting like a bratty self-involved kid after showing herself to be a pretty amazing adult when she wants to be. I find it hard to imagine that none of you have ever met people like that!

The storyline with Mena Suvari was pretty right on and realistic, esp. when Claire had to realize that she just couldn't commit to anything beyond a surface flirtation with bisexuality.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Thursday, 28 July 2005 14:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean, really, if any of you have been to art school in the past ten years, I can't imagine how you'd think the stuff there was even remotely "preposterous." Some bits were exaggerated for dramatic effect, but they nailed so many details and character types, I find it amazing that the entire writing staff are not art school graduates.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 1 August 2005 11:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw it... just when Six Feet Under was getting REALLY FUN again to watch, they go and throw an emotional monkeywrench in there and now I fear it will be unbearably depressing till the end of season and well into the next. It's always been an emotional trainwreck, but it was somehow light enough to be hilarious this whole season. That's the reason this season has been so great.

are you new to the show?

Not really, I didn't watch it for one season and I didn't really like it until this season. Lots of shows have drama and bad shit happen, like Desperate Housewives for instance, but this one had a very obvious method of creating a comfortable situation and then destroying it and creating something new out of it.

Hopefully there will be many more episodes of this last season.

He Who Can Not Be Named, Monday, 1 August 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 1 August 2005 21:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Still the most frustrating show on television - for every good moment or scene, there's drawn-out, stilted (often pseudo-surreal) dialogue. The mother is the worst for this - Nate and Claire (and their cadres) are usually the only characters that resemble actual people. The rest just seems very white-elephant to me.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 1 August 2005 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

SPOILERS FOLLOW

I liked this episode, but my aggravation with Nate has reached such an insane high that I was almost glad he died. Breaking up with your pregnant wife from your hospital bed, with your daughter in the room, right after she's spent the entire night in the hospital worrying about whether or not you'd be OK = instant fucking douchebag classic. So, yeah, I can't say I was exactly mourning his departure.

I do love Claire & David this season, tho.

Bullshit. I don't know who you know, but I assure you that there are most certainly a lot of people like Ruth and David and Rico in this world. Fuck, I relate to David quite a bit. God, what a horrifying world if everyone was as self-centered and narcissistic as Claire and Nate!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Nope, they've done that plenty of times on the show before where they've showed them offering cheap options. You're right: David and Nate aren't comfortable about the business and seem to be more concerned about the families, whereas Rico constantly jokes about the dead people and the money!

Oh yeah! Did you forget that? Rico doesn't seem to give a shit about the people. What about the scene with Nate's first fuck lying on the mortuary table and Rico says, "How's she holding up?" to Nate? Cool?

The way the latino casket scene happened, it just sounded like Nate was saying, "Jesus, the regular expensive casket wasn't good enough, you had to charge them an extra $300 to switch the handles?" Remember, Nate didn't know what the fuck they were saying because they were speaking Spanish, so how does he know Rico isn't just trying to sell them the most expensive stuff?

Rico totally turned it around in an instant. It's hard to tell from a script, but the way the scene was acted, it just sounded like Nate was mindlessly responding without really thinking about what race the people were. His comment was directed more toward the fact that everything was the best of the best. "We take care of our family" "Yeah and go broke doing it" ... same shit I've heard in a dozen other circumstances. It's just a comment about wasting money, not about how poor latinos are.

I disagree about the casket options, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 02:53 (eighteen years ago) link

That wasn't the card I was playing at all because I don't think Nate was being assholish in the least. Just Rico.

Or perhaps you have never heard the following:

"A car in the city? You'll go broke on parking alone... or parking tickets!"

"Can't smoke anymore, you'll go broke."

sixteen years pass...

Whenever you get tired of the principals (something I could say of almost everyone at one point or another except maybe David), there's always Patricia Clarkson, Kathy Bates, Joanna Cassidy, and Catherine O'Hara having the time of their lives.

Some debate over the art-school stuff above. For me, the worst--it's a parody of a parody, a meta-parody of how movies fun of art school. Much of it is spouted by Olivier: worse even than the cocktail chatter in Woody Allen's Manhattan. (If it's accurate, so be it--doesn't make it any less horrifying, just makes me glad I never went to art school.)

The first time I watched it through I was studying for a mixed arts-style undergraduate degree and the art school stuff - Claire and Russell's self-important disaffectedness, Jimmy's on-the-nose pseudo-celebrity, the cocaine photo exhibition...that all felt very otm. Hideous, but accurate.

I guess I got a bit of that taking a film degree in the early '80s, but not nearly as over-the-top (and, except for one course, we were studying films, not making them).
