Final Fantasy XII discussion thread for those playing the game

Because I can't even look at the other one any more.

At about eight hours in, it's been tremendously cathartic and enjoyable. Just got to a point where these electricity mosquitos are sucking up the underground juice and forcing out zombies... by the time I figured out what I was supposed to be doing, my team was merked; but I was impressed by the cleverness of the game design.
Really, so far it's just been a joy. The comment on first thread about how the game doesn't force you to give a shit about the character's DEEP FEELINGS is totally OTM

1 hr. in, I have been sent out of town to hunt a ROGUE TOMATO. Uh...
Opening FMV goes by quick. Kind of a Star Wars looking parade/wedding followed by a LOTR type battle where the groom is killed.
Voice acting not bad except for the whiny emo boys, one of whom (the brother of main emo boy Vaan) is stabbed in the gut and killed quite nicely within the first half-hour.
Battle system still fucking boring. I don't play MMORPGs, so the only thing I can compare it to is KOTOR. I'm not at the point where I have to dick around with the gambit system yet.
Oh, and I've purchased my first LICENSE (for a fucking ACCESSORY).

-- Marmot (marmotwolo...), November 2nd, 2006 7:16 PM. (marmotwolof) (later) (link)

btw, cut scenes ARE skippable (hit start then X), including the intro.

-- Marmot (marmotwolo...), November 2nd, 2006 8:23 PM. (marmotwolof) (later) (link)

i'm a little more than an hour in and i'm enjoying it. nothing great, but it's fun. i like the battle system more than i like KOTOR's. even though they're pretty much the same. my main complaint is the character design. the only non human characters i've seen so far look like...lame lizard guys. and my first big fight was with....a tomato thing.

based on the first hour or so of play, i would rate it a 7 out of 10.

-- Christopher Costello (Glixe...), November 2nd, 2006 10:22 PM. (CGC) (later) (link)

Yeah, I'd go 7/10 so far. I'm a couple more hours in, just wasted some time getting Vaan to Lv. 4 for the hell of it and am now on the Sunstone quest with Penelo just joining my party.
Supposedly the story really kicks in at about the 10 hr. mark.

-- Marmot (marmotwolo...), November 2nd, 2006 11:49 PM. (marmotwolof) (later) (link)

mostly Linear main plots with useless side quests you have to go on gamefaqs to figure out! battle with no room for real tactics (BARDS FUCKING TALE had better battles)

-- roc u like a § (jo...), Saturday 4:38 PM. (ex machina) (later) (link)

This game is not nearly as twee as you would think. Well, the new moogles are but Vaan doesn't whine as much as earlier leads and the "rabbit stripper bitch" Fran barely has any lines, but when she does talk it's like this monotone Scandinavian accent, not cutesy.
Also, the way the story is told it doesn't try to make you GIVE A SHIT about the characters' FEELINGS the way the other FFs did.

Haha, I'm actually taking a break from FF to play Bully right now.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Friday, 10 November 2006 05:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm like 35h in, at whatever is after the Stilshrine of Miriam. Going to Archadia or something. The best part of the game is the electro-bugs/zombies jimbajam explosion near the start. That part of the game was like a 9/10 for sure but the rest is still floating around an 8 overall for stomachability and about 7 for actual fun. Beats that new Phantasy Star game anyway (which I played for about 45 seconds and gave up because it looked boring).

Will M. (Will M.), Saturday, 11 November 2006 05:20 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd argue with Jon on the "real battles" point; the gambit system works pretty well.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 11 November 2006 20:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Gabe's post about it on PA makes me almost want to try it out.
Problem is, all final fantasy protagonists since FF3 are basically modeled after dog latin, so I can't really get into it.

KOTOR is an appropriate comparison for the battle system.

Oh, dude, don't say that because it'll get me interested.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 13 November 2006 16:36 (seventeen years ago) link

It's really the first RPG since KOTOR to hold my attention firmly, so if you enjoyed Knights, I have to suggest you try it.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 23:54 (seventeen years ago) link

forks can you better explain why this is holding yr attention better than DQ8 did?

LISTEN U TURBO CROUTON (TOMBOT), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 00:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Sure, though I should lead with a couple of points on my own gaming life:
1) I'm a self-confessed Square nerd, having played though at least five Final Fantasys and a handful of other related games.
2) I play while my girlfriend watches, so if the game doesn't hold her attention, I'm less inclined to play.
FFXII's graphics are knockout beautiful, the character animations are shockingly smooth and organic and the design is gleefully batshit. The music is a pleasant mix of old "classic" tunes and excellent ambient; the sound design in general is lovely. Play control is pretty effortlessly intuitive and the storyline, while vapid, keeps the game moving.
But that's doesn't really answer your question, does it? Fact is, while I really enjoyed DQ8 for quite awhile (for much of the same reasons as above), it eventually became terribly tedious. The amount of dead time spent loading random monster battles or loading back to the world map just took it's toll. This is where I think the gambit system is really pretty brilliant; like my girl says "I know you're just rolling dice in both games, but at least FF tries to help you pretend you're fighting."

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 November 2006 07:59 (seventeen years ago) link

And I'm at about hero level 33 and everyone else is at 27; just killed some greenery dragon in the jungle and am working my hunts.
FINALLY got the goddam white mousse; that fight took about an hour and a half, but I nailed the sumbitch!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 November 2006 08:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 November 2006 16:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, you don't even get anything for killing them even though it is technically possible. Just run.
I've got everyone at Lv 32 and just finished the Mandragoras boss fight. I also just got the accessory that gives you double exp so I might try to grind everyone up to 40 or so to make up for the lack of grinding I've done so far.

nine months pass...

55 hours in and I don't seem close to finishing it. I just finished up the first trip to Archades, how far am I? This game is IMMENSE.

My only complaint is that boss fights just come down to hitting them with Quickening chains repeatedly, swapping out party members and using Charge to refill MP. Am I missing interesting challenges by being so cheap?

abanana, Sunday, 19 August 2007 21:47 (sixteen years ago) link

70 to beat it, for me. Still haven't finished all the optional stuff. Probably another 30-50 hours for that if you want to be thorough.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 19 August 2007 22:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I think I hit the 55 hour mark and burned out; ran to the end and finished it.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 19 August 2007 23:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I did do a lot of hunting and stuff while the main story hadn't finished yet, so you could shave off some time if you skip all that.

I stated playing a couple days ago and I'm highly addicted already. The battle system doesn't really seem too different than other final fantasy games except random encounters don't exist. Random encounters or not, the enemies can still surprise attack you or chase you down which makes dodging enemies more difficult. So, the battle system isn't really flawed - like a lot of people say.

But I died twice today when I was trying to kill some big rare cockatrices for experience. I lost all the loot and experience up to when I fought these baddies. It was kinda annoying that I had to repeat the same battles 3 times and waste two hours on the times I died. However, it could have been totally avoidable if I wasn't in such a hurry to hit the tough rare guys to rack up experience.

Graphics: A+
Sound: A
Gameplay: A (any more detail would just annoy me probably)
Story: A
Fun Factor: B+
(it is a bit too much like other rpgs, even if the battle system has changed greatly to a more action oriented rpg. even though this game is more action oriented than other final fantasy games, the rpg elements are still very much intact and the battles are nothing like zelda or ys games which rely heavily on quick paced button mashing, rather than rpg timed action-decisions.)

The graphics and the story really stand out and I enjoy leveling up and trying to acquire new weapons and spells unlike most rpgs.

and I'm sure that having the walkthrough manual makes this game 10 times more fun for me, even though I never claim to be a cheater in video games. It just feels good having the manual so I wont miss anything and I want wander around an area endlessly when the loot isn't actually there.

If somebody had said earlier on that this game is kind of like an absurdist fantasy novel wherein you control Paul Simonon 1981 I would have had much less shit to say about it

although the battle system is kind of ridiculously uninvolved, at least in rogue galaxy they made you hit buttons

Stupid me thought I could go beat a bunch of the level one hunts before I went to the sky city, resulting in me having to bolt for a save crystal with the doom clock ticking down, having not actually saved for a couple of hours.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 25 September 2008 04:23 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, it is perhaps not a good design feature when like 3/5ths of a ludicrously drawn-out fetch quest can be completed at basically noob levels while the third act of same convoluted fetch quest involves walking up on the territory of some lvl 30 giant palette-swapped bullshit from hell

"Alpha Worgen" is on my shit list. As is my habit of not saving very often because it's not like any battles in the first 20 hours or so other than Mr. Optional Demon Wall put you in any real danger of a party wipe.

also how did it take me 22 hours to figure out that Balthier is gay?

El Tomboto, Monday, 29 September 2008 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Save early, save often. I am consistently surprised how 3+ typical wondering-the-woods mobs are able to all but wipe my party while I can stick it out and whittle down far more terrifying-looking boss fuckers. The timing and speed aspects of this game are more important than in any other RPG I've ever played, I think, even the tactical sort.

El Tomboto, Monday, 13 October 2008 04:13 (fifteen years ago) link

You know it's all well and good to be able to experience a lot of the intriguing gameplay elements of a MMORPG without having to deal with... other... people... but frankly this Basch kid plays the offensive tackle position like a fucking, I don't know, he's a slice of fucking Emmentaler is what he is. Sure he can dish it out but I just want him to once in a while you know STEP IN FRONT OF THE FAT TOAD THING THAT IS SLAPPING ME AROUND.

Lingbert, Friday, 17 October 2008 06:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Seriously that is probably my weirdest moment ever in a game. After they scattered, it was like 15 minutes of running around, all my ranged weapon experts in the party, two casters and Mr. Gay Gunslinger chasing these poor little vegetable-headed bastards around a giant arena, getting coated in eldritch pollen and subjected to midget headbutts. Then shooting the perpetrators in the back repeatedly as they tried to regroup. I give them credit for putting up a fight. I also take that credit away for being dumb enough for pissing off a man with a golden shotgun. BLAM!! oof ow uhhh I have been magical-retarded oof ugh BLAM!! BLAM!!

a coupla points for later elaboration

1. when you try to stack actions in a battle with several opponents (by several I mean >3 ha ha) the turn based nature of the battle system becomes a little bit frustrating. step outside your gambits with two of your characters and CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE FOUND THE EASTER EGG WHEREIN FINAL FANTASY DECIDES TO ACT LIKE WINDOWS AND SIT THERE FOR FIVE MINUTES WHILE IT THINKS ABOUT WHAT YOU JUST TOLD IT TO DO. Genuinely the most frustrating moment in a game I've had in a long, long, long fucking time. This is a fucking RPG. It should not present me with lag problems.

2. Do not attempt the pharos subterra just because you can kill pylraster. jesus fucking christ on a god damned popsicle stick those fucking toads and their little magical pony friends wiped me twice before I figured out lv66 just wasn't good enough. what in god's name.

3. The gun is good. I don't know if the penis is evil but the gun is good.

TOMBOT, Sunday, 16 November 2008 06:36 (fifteen years ago) link

oh and 4. if you're going to put in some minigames, try to make the interface at least remotely approachable. the fishing and the footrace game in this are about as atrocious as the problem described in 1, above.

I gave up on FFX, I kept getting mad at it for being stupid. I might pick it back up once I'm done with XII and VII (which I played before but never finished).

I might revisit 9 too but I dunno if the Switch version is any good?

10 seemed very railroaded to me but maybe i didn't get far enough into it

a lot of them are railroaded for the first half until you get the airship or w/e

first half linear, second half open world / revisiting earlier areas with new purpose is a pretty standard rpg structure
