I got this back and played through chapter 1 last night. So so good, although I think I'm still missing out on possible treasure/money-making schemes. I wanna buy that Infinite Rocket Launcher!

There's an INFINITE ROCKET LAUNCHER???

If you beat the game and then start at the beginning, the merchant dude has one for 1,000,000 units of zombie villager currency.

The roof came off my girlfriend's apartment during Katrina. This would be only mildly catastrophic except SHE HAD BORROWED MY GAMECUBE. I just realized this reading this thread and thinking about playing some RE4.
Still the best game of this generation.

Tragic, Adam!

I have done nothing the last two nights after work except play RE4, it sucked me in just like the first time through.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 13:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, that was a fun three nights. The Infinite Rocket Launcher (which I didn't get until chapter 5) makes things, uh, much easier. Now I kinda want to play RE2 again...was 3 any good?

I never played this! I'm thinking about picking up the Wii version and finally giving it a shot...

About how long of a game is it (just three nights?)?

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 21 June 2007 17:49 (sixteen years ago) link

15 hours? 18? I don't really remember. Since you have never played it you really, really, really should get it. Easily one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had.

adam, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

got the wii version last night and spent an hour and a half getting pitchforked into oblivion while picking my jaw up off the ground @ the graphics. Skipping a generation (for all intents and purposes - I had a Dreamcast and then kinda stopped playing video games until I got my DS) helps mightily with that last point, though.

jamescobo, Thursday, 21 June 2007 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link

They didn't have the wii version in stock, so fuck it, I picked up the ps2 greatest hit version for twenty. No waggle, but saved ten bucks (not a big waggle fan yet, anyway). Now I just gotta find some time to play...

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 21 June 2007 19:45 (sixteen years ago) link

It is a really great game. I am not into survival horror at all, but this game is so well done that it didn't matter.

RESIDENT EVIL: THE UMBRELLA CHRONICLES is gonna be so sick. it's a house of dead style rail-shooter using the remote to aim and fire. out in october apparantly. i'm literally frothing at the mouth for this game right now.

Hey - I finally beat Resident Evil 4 tonight for the first time. Apparently it took me over 21 hours and I died over 60 times!?!

I liked the way the world you move through really feels connected and like a real place - even if at times that was a creepier place than I wanted to be. I didn't like some of the clunky things with the controls, having to scrounge through every corner and barrel for ammo, health and spare change pick-ups (just not a fun activity), and the occasional weird boss fight where you can't really harm the boss until you cross some random threshold and end up stupidly wasting a lot of (rare) ammo. The game seemed to run on a bit long - what, I had to rescue the same whiny girl FIVE times.

Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 31 January 2009 06:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I recommend trying out the Mercenaries game. It's the kind of subgame that takes a lot of practice and dying over and over again to achieve high scores, but especially after seeing the way it's supposed to be done in online videos, I was really into it. This surprised the hell out of me considering I was particularly good at killing/surviving at all in the main quest (I remember dying far, far more than 60 times).

Despite putting a ton of time into Mercenaries, I never even got around to beating the main game again, I probably will revisit it at some point - it's a genuine classic. I do agree that there were some parts that dragged, but for finally redeeming the awkward gameplay and controls of the Resident Evil series, it deserves a medal.

got my gamecube back from my ex and started playing this again yesterday. still so much fun. i don't want to hate on RE5 because i really did like it, but RE4 just seems much more carefully thought-out. and scarier.

adam, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

honestly, i find it appalling how easy games are these days.

PSOD (Ste), Saturday, 31 March 2012 18:09 (twelve years ago) link

i remember getting utterly slaughtered for a while on that beginning stage when i first played it. it's part of why it's such a good opening scene, there's little setup at all for how crazy it is!

Nhex, Saturday, 31 March 2012 23:18 (twelve years ago) link

also, i'm almost sure RE4 is the most perfectly balanced game ever.

PSOD (Ste), Saturday, 31 March 2012 23:52 (twelve years ago) link

it's also perfectly paced. i often find action games to be fatiguing--too much too fast until it becomes kinda meaningless, like a transformers movie. in RE4 each room feels pretty distinct even though there are really only a few different approaches to level design in this game: dudes coming at you down a corridor, dudes coming at you from everywhere, TOO MANY DUDES and you gotta run away, boss fight, puzzle. and jetski. i know it's coming and i'm dreading it.

adam, Monday, 2 April 2012 14:49 (twelve years ago) link

i know it's coming and i'm dreading it.

man thats otm with this game, but the gameplay is so great it doesn't become a chore.
saying that i never did finish it because i accidentally deleted my save file and i was at the last section. i just couldn't handle having to redo all that again, maybe one day.

PSOD (Ste), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

the first village might be the hardest part of the game! i played the hd remake a few months ago and the only other part i got into trouble was the section with the two chainsaw ladies (somehow ended up with next to zero ammo before and after that, and then you have to face this whole other section before getting to save again).

still the best game. got to play 'separate ways' for the first time too, which was a lot longer and more fun than i expected.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Monday, 2 April 2012 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

the chainsaw ladies are brutal. spammed them w/ flash grenades and basically emptied every clip i had for every weapon into them, think i ended up killing them with a scoped rifle from like 10 ft away.

i never played RE5 b/c of the whole incredibly racist thing but i caved and ordered it after a 6-hr RE4 session yesterday. can't wait.

adam, Monday, 2 April 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

ha i did the same thing, you can get it for like ten bucks now. it pretty much sucks to play by yourself for the first half, but i thought the second half got more RE4-ish (until the last boss fight, which is terrible).

I gave up on RE after 4, tried 5 for about 2 minutes and just barfed all over my keyboard.

But I just watched a longplay of 7, and fucking hell that game is incredible. The dlc stuff is great looking too, especially that bedroom game.

Tried the demo of the remake, and the aggressiveness and difficulty feels really cranked up? I don't know if this is just for the demo because you're not actually supposed to progress, but it was a little off putting. Maybe I just need to get used to the new feel (or just play the old one, which is still available after all).

I’ve played through this game thrice— once on GC, once on PS3, and just at the start of lockdown on NS. It was SO HARD to come back to, three years ago. The aiming makes sense but it is so… different I guess from what I’ve become used to?

I dislike the middle sequence with the little Colonial shithead but I liked the ending, especially the Wesker fight

Never played the Ava stuff

Oh, I don’t remember which version of 7 I got but I played it for a couple hours and found it to be so scary that I wasn’t enjoying it haha

I think some Texas Chainsaw Dad was trying to kill me with a car inside a garage and I just checked out

It was kind of a joy to play the Ada/Separate Ways dlc for the first time a few years ago, it was much meatier then I expected.

RE4 controls always take time to readjust to, it was such a leap from prior games and yet so different from modern conventions. I wonder if the new remake is trying to update it just a bit too much and it's resisting the pull. Idk, gonna judge to play around with it some more.

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 16 March 2023 21:15 (one year ago) link

Ok I switched to the old RE4 control scheme and learned how to do the kick and duck grabs, and managed to run around until the church bells rang, I'm back in.

Got through the Village again in the real game, I'm actually pretty psyched to play this through with all the new little variations. Movement is clearly a central mechanic this time, they really want you to keep on the move via bullets not reliably stopping/stunning enemies, someone always coming from behind, etc.

In the original game I could plant myself in one position and pick enemies off, and I remember being able to basically clear out the village before the bell rang. Now it's an exercise in running away until the clock strikes, which I suppose makes everything feel more 'survival horror' than like a shooting gallery.

change display name (Jordan), Saturday, 25 March 2023 15:03 (one year ago) link

I think I'm about halfway through (mid-chapter 9) and really enjoying it. Nu-Ashley took some getting used to early on, since the cultists seem more aggressive about going for her. There are also a couple sections where the game seems to want you to run or stealth through instead of killing all enemies, and if she gets caught it's easy to get overwhelmed. I actually had to come up with a bit of a strategy to get through one or two bits (laying mines, using flash grenades), weird.

But overall it's so fun to just play through the game again with all these changes, pretty much all for the better (the puzzles are all still annoying, although I guess endearingly so). I'm stubbornly sticking to my old approach of Red 9 + riot gun + sniper rifle, only spicing it up with those bolt thrower land mines every now and then.

I love the campiness and rollercoaster-esque pacing of this game, but I loath looking it up online and seeing all these "gun nerds" talking about how realistic or unrealistic the weapons are, ugh.

i am desperate to play this and recreate the initial ilx playthrough, which was one of my favorite video game experiences, but i'm not sure my 5 year old is ready for it.
