Snow day cooking

We got 3" of snow last night, the streets around us are icy sheets of doom, and I'm using it as a convenient excuse to stay home. What should I cook up: cookies, fudge, brownies, or cake?

I was just checking on the provisions - I think I've got enough stuff to do brownies (which don't take any milk) and one of the others (which do - though I've got evaporated and sweetened condensed in the pantry...)

Carrot cake.

Hm. No carrots. Unless by some miracle the organic vegetable delivery van shows up (today is the usual day, but I doubt they'll make it).

Brownies are in the prep stage - 1 cup butter and 1 cup dutch process cocoa in the double boiler; 4 eggs, 2 cups sugar, 1/2 tsp salt whipped to a fluffy white meringue by the kitchenaid; brand new commercial grade 9" cake pan (Chicago Metallic - xmas gift) lavishly buttered and dusted with cocoa, oven preheated to 400 F.

Sounds great! For a second though I misread that you were lavishly buttering the finished brownies, and I marveled at your dedication to richness.

You can always count on me to recommend the non-chocolate option.

Mmmm, brownies now baking (the rest of the recipe: stir 2 tsp. vanilla (I use Penzey's doublefold, probably overkill but what the hell) into the butter/cocoa, gently fold cocoa mixture into the egg/sugar meringue, then barely fold in a scant 1 cup sifted cake flour into the the batter, just until white streaks disappear. Pour evenly into pan, put in oven and immediately turn temp down to 350 F. Bake for 40 minutes, cool, cut, eat).

I can't believe it - the vegetable box got delivered, but no carrots this week. 2 heads(?)...stalks(?)...bulbs(?) of fennel though!

Warm brownies have been eaten; visiting daughter has declared she is moving to Seattle with all her friends. Fudge is slowing boiling up and a divine smelling duck stock (for risotto tonight - I didn't get to the the other night) is making the cat insane.

twelve years pass...

yooooo hi Jaq looks like you sent us some of that Seattle snow and I am trapped indoors with limited groceries. I am gonna make baked custard.
