that sounds like something i'd want to read.

That one guy that quit, Sunday, 3 June 2007 18:30 (sixteen years ago) link

rather than sending it, i shall describe it for you.

A single horn (trumpet?) sounds.

Flourish of violins and other assorted strings. A low sound, much like a tuba, is also detectable.

The horn sounds again, a few semitones lower. It begins to play a slow tune.

Enter piano and some rain effects. The low tuba thing goes on.

Ethereal moans and wail permeate the song.

Suddenly, an oscillating, windy pumping noise fills the speakers, dying away as soon as it arrives. As it returns for the second time, however, a bluesy guitar riff bursts in unexpectedly.

Along with a distorted harmonica.

Some muted percussion is also audible.

Hollis begins to sing: "Oh yeah, the world's turned upside down..."

Shall I continue?

it may seem silly to ask about something this mundane but i always wanna know. There's this certain "glass" sound that can be heard in many Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions ... How was it created?
-- startrekman, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:15 (2 years ago) Link

i know that song inside and out and i don't know which keyb line you are talking about. the long high line or one of the more staccato runs?
-- g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:21 (2 years ago) Link

no not a keyboard sound but a drum machine sound, theres this certain "glass sound" that comes from a drum machine of some sort.
-- startrekman, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:23 (2 years ago) Link

as in the whole drum pallette sounds "glassy" or there is one particular sound that sounds like glass (breaking?)? you're pretty inarticulate for a formalist.

No, it's not made with blood diamonds, that's one thing he insisted on and made sure were sourced appropriately. I don't know the guy enough to call wanker on him, but I know he's done some nice things for other friends which alleviate the potential for wankery which is so obviously there.

Ran into one of my artworld stately homo friends last night, who said he'd boycotted the opening and now heard that there had been these really OTT goodie bags handed out to the celebrity art tourists who did go. Despite these being rammed full of luxury goods he did not regret his decision in the least because the work and whole phenomenon of Damien bling was large steaming pile of wank.

Stevenson, as usual, is knowledgeable, brisk, cool in his assessments of Western military and intelligence. A great LRB asset.

He doesn't mention the oddest thing about "Five Eyes", that most people (not all) have two eyes and thus, for a better image, five subjects with eyes should really add up to "Ten Eyes".

Not controversial here. For example, Christina Rossetti's poem In the Bleak Midwinter is set near the winter solstice. By the same token, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream takes place on the night of summer solstice. Thus we are reminded that for most of the past centuries, summertime ended on the autumnal equinox at September 21st, which was also when winter began.

I'm not sure why I'd take any of this seriously, but it's how I roll.

The 'thing' is unspecified. Based on my reading of the text, the breaking of his heart is not the 'thing' itself, but rather the effect it has on him. First she does the 'thing', then it breaks his heart. He understands she is unaware of the effect the 'thing' has on him, so the effect is incidental rather than intended.

While the specific 'thing' is left to the imagination of the audience, the set of realistic interpretations will cluster around her being cute, lovable and mildly flirtatious, without seriously considering the narrator as suitable for an amorous relationship. It is the first of these attributes of the 'thing' that make it hard to forget her, but it is the last of these attributes that causes him heartbreak/heartache, which is why he singles it out as the required remedy for his heartbreak in the later stanzas.

All of the foregoing amply proves that a careful dissection of the rhetorical constructs of this lyric is overblown silliness.
