Perhaps it was because dicky dearest phrased it as a command, not a request.

chris was merely quoting the original review of great expectations from the atlantic, september 1861:

"The very title of this book indicates the confidence of conscious genius. In a new aspirant for public favor, such a title might have been a good device to attract attention; but the most famous novelist of the day, watched by jealous rivals and critics, could hardly have selected it, had he not inwardly felt the capacity to meet all the expectations he raised. In short, Mr. Dickens: fuck you."

Is that the one with Gwyneth Paltrow and Rober DeNiro? Great movie.

I like the way GREAT is emphasised. As if there might be another Dickens book called 'Fair to Middling Expectations'.

Pip meets Miss Havisham and she strings him along for a gazillion pages with the notion of future money and the lovely Estella. That was about all I got out of the play (well, that and a burning hatred of harpsichord music).

"What you reading, Topper?"
"Great Expectations"
"Any good?"
"It's not all I hoped it would be."

Hot Shots Part Deux.

A young, naive fellow encounters various colorful characters in an English city while struggling to find his place in the world.

Dickens's books can't really be grasped via plot summaries, Mr. Dicky. They're all about the kickass characters you meet along the way. Plus, the books are so long and episodic, it's kinda like asking someone to summarize "The Sopranos."

Way to shoot Dickens down!
