I guess this goes under the "Chemistry aka Performance Enhancing Chemicals" category:

Balls Out: How to throw a no-hitter on acid, and other lessons from the career of baseball legend Dock Ellis

Some funny quotes in that article. I guess baseball was a little different in the '70s:

"I absolutely loved him," says [Rangers owner Brad] Corbett, who acquired Ellis from the A's in June 1977. "The biggest misperception about Dock is that he's this untamed, self-destructive wildman. And part of that is true; he was crazy, but in a good way. He was fun. He had a way of keeping people loose. He was a practical joker. He had character. Everybody loves to talk about that LSD no-hitter, but come on. Stuff like that was happening all the time. Everybody was doing something. One relief pitcher we traded for, I went to meet him in New York at Studio 54. And I walk in and look over and say to myself, 'Hmm. Is that sugar?'

"Right about the time I left, it changed. You can't throw at anyone without getting thrown out of the game. The announcers today say it ruins the game. They never talk about the fights that Cincinnati and St. Louis got into 30 years ago. Barry Bonds? I'd hit him at least once a game. 'Cause he's got all that shit on. Yeah, let's see that shit stop the ball from hurting him if I hit him on the motherfucking elbow or something. I'd hit him just to see, does it work?"

AWESOME

cf, Roger Clemens.

To Bonds' credit though, a pitch at that spot where is elbow-armor is, was probably one of the 702.

Ha! They ran the same story in the Houston Press this week.

Of course, the Press also runs the Observer's movie reviews.

How did Dock do at the plate this game?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 26 June 2005 00:20 (eighteen years ago) link

This was actually the cover of the Observer a couple of weeks ago. Slow week, I guess - I couldn't figure out how a profile of a long-retired player who's done nothing noteworthy recently merited the cover.

I remember hearing this story in high school, and I didn't believe it, so I looked it up. Gotta love his name on the lineup card: Ellis, D.

"For those not named Nolan Ryan, the no-hitter is a rare and treasured event — consider that a Mets pitcher has never thrown one. "

worthless statement imo

one year passes...

In 1978, Bevacqua, Ellis and fellow former Pirate Richie Zisk were reunited as teammates in Texas. Bevacqua and Zisk roomed together on the road. Near the end of the season, Ellis dropped a paper bag between them.

“That’s for you guys,” Ellis said.

Bevacqua was stumped. He opened the bag. Inside was a bundle of cash. Something like $2,700, Bevacqua recalled.

“Does he owe you money?” Bevacqua asked Zisk.

“No.”

“Well, he doesn’t owe me any money.”

The duo visited Ellis. What was going on? Ellis was beaming. He was paying his tab, he explained. He had been signing his room-service bills to Bevacqua and Zisk’s room for most of the season. Now they were even.

“Dock Ellis was a hell of a guy,” Bevacqua said. “As crazy as he was … you know what? He just did crazy shit. He really wasn’t that crazy.”
