an amazing cinematographer (black narcissus, the red shoes, the african queen), yet a fairly lackluster and short-lived director. the mercenaries is pretty colorful and pulpy (i seem to recall jim brown paddling down river on a pair of skis). did cardiff direct anything else of note?

Sons and Lovers is his most acclaimed, but I haven't seen it.

He also DP'd Rambo!!!

For realz?

wow. although, for some reason i knew he did the dogs of war, so i guess rambo isn't a stretch. it's pretty funny to think that the same guy DP'd rambo and the red shoes, though. maybe there should be a thread for people who worked on the most wildly different pair of films.

Well, I guess Sven Nykvist did Sleepless In Seattle.

(I actually was gonna post that before a spectator bird's post was here)

two years pass...

I have gotten his book out of the library and read some of it and it seems pretty good, but unfortunately I took a lot of books out of the library and return them unfinished.

RIP. Did not know about Under Capricorn. Wish I had bought the one copy of that book they had at The Strand.

Need to watch Sons and Lovers; always found it hard to picture Trevor Howard as Mr. Morel.

I guess UC was after Rope?

right after, '49

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 23 April 2009 02:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Ah. That's highly significant.

Wow, long confessional take like something out of Ingmar Bergman.

I guess Hitch did a Billy Wilder and disowned it because it was a flop, but looks worth investigating.

RIP big man

saw 'under capricorn' in a sweet print at the nft in january. not one of hitch's best films, but j.c. was on some other shit.

I hope they eventually get to JC reading Stallone the riot act over lighting issues.

That blogger is working cinematographer so I doubt he will go there. Just want through all four parts and didn't see anything. Now to see what he has to say about John Alton.

"Girl On A Motorcycle". Apparently the first ever X movie in the USA. Goes all solarized during the sex scenes though, so you can't actually see much. Anyway I'd forgotten how boring this film is and how much of it consists of Marianne Faithfull riding around on a Harley D looking winsome with a gormless grin on her face while chuntering away endlessly in the voiceover. Looks nice though.

lol that is pretty much exactly what I was worried this movie would be like, so thank you for a genuinely useful post

Tom D otm, maybe in '68 the racy material may have passed muster, but looks quite dull and quaint now.

Still did give one of the best posters of all time.
