The Merchant of Four Seasons has always been one of my favorites as well. True despair.
Another excellent film (sadly unavailable on DVD) is I Only Want You to Love Me, which was a TV film he did.
If you want to see a very strange one, rent Whity. Bizarre.

'The Third Generation', 'Merchant of Four Seasons', and 'Lola' would be my three at this point in time. I really want to see 'Mutter Kuster's Trip to Heaven' or whatever it's called. And Criterion's BRD DVD set looks fanstastic.

but he really has a style all of his own, and there is some really subtle genius at work in his films. you start to really see his true cinematic vision after four or five films.
he's never been one of my favorite filmmakers, but i enjoy his work.

The film was called "Germany in Autumn." It was a compilation of shorts by German directors made in response to the Baader-Meinhof incident.
