anyone know bands similar to Fly Pan Am?

anyone know any bands in the same vein as fly pan am? and im not talking about other kranky releases, i mean anything on the damaged funk, tape-experiment, hypnotic repetition kinda tip. they dont get much credit, but ive become mildly obsessed with them recently. i'd be real grateful for any help or suggestions....

Do Make Say Think do the same thing. As do Godspeed and the like. The new Do Make Say Think record is very nice... Another one to try out, more on the avant side: Jackie-O Motherfucker.

I'd argue with that somewhat, Yancey, though I love em all...Fly Pan Am really has more of an electronic feel, heavily processed, while both Godspeed and Do Make Say Think are really more traditional in that their songs develop fairly conventionally (though admittedly using rock instruments and a non-rock idiom). Fly Pan Am, on the other hand, seems far more random, with tracks disintegrating in the midddle from some heavily processed sfx into a fairly traditional guitar riff, and then off to something else.

Right off the top of my head, the most obvious choice for something similar to a "damaged funk, tape-experiment, hypnotic repetition" project would be early Cabaret Voltaire...Mix Up, Red Mecca, Three Mantras, and I'd say the best would be 2x45. Try downloading some of that first...maybe it's just too minimal.

I like Fly Pan Am, but I would say you are giving them too much credit to call Cabaret Voltaire "similar"...

Gastr Del Sol and Flying Saucer Attack both sound like what you're after, although I'm not a fan of either. I only liked parts of Fly Pan Am's first album anyway. You might also check out Twine Recorder or maybe some of the other bands on the Hefty Records 2-CD comp, Immediate Action. Or some of the acoustic/electronic hybrid stuff on Morr Music, like Manual.

this heat definitely and from what I remember of the last time I saw fly pan am live I'd say talking heads - fear of music.

one year passes...

New record C'est ca is out today! Imo they should've cut the intro-track and just blasted right out of the gate w/ the second song, but that's my only complaint after first listen. It's surprisingly shoegazey!

This new one is incredible. I'm not sure what I was expecting from a 2019 Fly Pan Am record and I'm not sure this is it, but I'm knocked out by it. "Discreet Channeling" is tops.
