Future Sound Of London/Amorphous Androgynous

All of my mates, who were once huge FSOL fans, have refused to buy the Amorphous Androgynous/FSOL cd,as NME etc said it was a prog rock album. Well more to do with the fact that NME etc have always drummed it into them that ALL prog is evil.
I think its a fine album. Also prog/art/kraut rock or whatever you wanna call it has its good and bad sides.
Is this blinkered attitude of these people wrong?

I heart FSOL and think Dead Cities is utter genius, and that their ability to ferret out deep interesting sounds has only gotten better: but as to "The Isness" the lyrics! and the VOKILLS! o dear. ill-advised. too much time hanging out with Ian Astbury I fear. Too long a wait for too little a payoff.

Minus the songs with vocals it's a very solid record, tho :)

J0hn Darni1elle, Thursday, 29 August 2002 23:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

But FSOL have ALWAYS been prog... it's just that Lifeforms was bleepy squelchy prog and this is old smelly mouldy sandals'n'sitars prog.

I'm not convinced that The Isness is as radical a departure from what they've done before as people are making out - to me the major change seems to be in the arrangements more than the actual music itself.

But I never liked FSOL, so my opinion aint worth shit.

god knows whats going on in FSOL's heads these days...i suppose they re-issued Papua New Guinea late last year cos it was ten years old but they also got it re-remixed (or re-interpreted as they say) about 18 times for that 'Translations' mini album, so there are now about 2517 remixes of the track. not sure about this Amorphous thing but they seem to have remixed Deadly Avenger's 'Day One' in superb fashion so they've still got 'it' i figure

I liked the last Amorphous Androgynous/FSOL 'prog' release. I quite like the new one too.
But I suspect I might be on my own here. I wouldn't expect them to make another Dead Cities(my fave) or a Lifeforms anyway.

Yage/Fuzzy Logic stuff holds up really, really well

J0hn D., Saturday, 24 November 2007 02:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Does anyone have the peel session where FSOL played a track called Yage? It was different from the track of the same name as it had some heavy guitar right through it. I did get it on slsk years ago but since lost the cdr I had it on.

Fantastic just found the mp3 of it in the deep dark recesses of my external drive.

And it sounds great

Forgot how much I liked Accelerator. And I'm very glad I have the Jumpin' and Pumpin' version rather than whatever reissue it was that Cleopatra put out.

This is a really fun mix from these dudes.
I've never known them to be this listener-friendly before.

oooh. first oasis, now weller pays for the big 20 minute remix treatment :

9. Aim high / Pieces of a dream (The Amorphous Androgynous Remix ) Part 1: Aim High (Aim Higher)
10. Aim high / Pieces of a dream (The Amorphous Androgynous Remix ) Part 2: Pieces Of A Dream (A Dream In Pieces)
11. Aim high / Pieces of a dream (The Amorphous Androgynous Remix ) Part 3: Aim High (The Higher Aim)
12. Aim high / Pieces of a dream (The Amorphous Androgynous Remix ) Part 4: Aim High (Like Water Needs A Flower)

to be included on an extra disc of remixes that comes with his new album.

anyone heard it yet ?

mark e, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 10:53 (fourteen years ago) link

these guys stuff is crazy slept on...

the mix they did for Mojo magazine was a rare example of a CD on the front of a rock magazine being anything other than bin fodder.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 11:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Aim High is regarded(by many of his hardcore fans) as Weller's best solo song ever, so since i love Amorphous Androgynous I think this could be good. My mate is a weller fanatic so i'll hear these when his deluxe edition cd arrives and he brings it over.

Amorphous Androgynous - The Peppermint Tree and the Seeds of Superconsciousness (2008)

Listened to this 3 times this weekend and loved it. I'm too dense to do it any justice with a description. It's a sprawling trip that never becomes overbearing.

there is a volume 2 as well.

volume 3 will be a remixes set, and supposed out on limited vinyl on record store day.

basically, its the AA sonic palette applied to a 70s soundtrack.

whats the betting a lot of the noel g recordings have been sucked into this, as i cannot imagine they are just going to let those guitar recordings go to waste.

There was a brief period in high school when I smoked too much pot and the Amorphous Androgynous' Isness seemed like the most brilliant music in the world for me. I listened to it a couple of years ago and I don't get it. A couple of songs are okay but it sounds so... terrible, the tracks with vocals are particularly offensive.

Chris Ott gave him an 8 in pfork ffs.

The AA remixes of songs from the band Syd Arthur's first album is really fantastic, My favourite thing from FSOL by some margin. It helps that the source material ia good of course. Yeah, lovely.

ordered the new AA 2cd package last night as part of bandcamp friday.

the core part of the release is a 40 minute epic that involves peter hammill ..

it's quite a thing, and one for the late night part of a listening session.

Both the album and the remixes record are superb. Real heady stuff.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Saturday, 3 April 2021 20:19 (three years ago) link

Real heady stuff.

indeed.
the cover art on both releases is very indicative.
not so sure anyone else is making anything like this stuff these days.

mark e, Saturday, 3 April 2021 20:29 (three years ago) link

The two songs available for preview have a heavy prog rock (/fusion?) influence. I usually stan for A.A. but maybe I will have to take a pass on this one.

Whoops just realized the only two threads I’ve replied to recently were both at you (and I sort of said the same thing about A.A. and Unkle). Don’t mean to crowd out the Gen-X stoner-raver target market here, all three of us...

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 5 April 2021 16:04 (three years ago) link

in retrospect this aspect of FSOL/AA was readily apparent from the beginning... I should spend more time with the last couple of AA albums and see if I can get into it. Lifeforms continues to be a favorite album.

mark e. smith-moon (f. hazel), Monday, 5 April 2021 16:10 (three years ago) link

note - these are not albums as such.
its one song but done in all manner of variations spread over the 2 discs.

mark e, Monday, 5 April 2021 16:16 (three years ago) link

cool, they did something similar on the Lifeforms and Cascade EPs from Lifeforms!

hadn't heard Cascade 2020 but this is all excellent lush futuristic stuff, my favorite FSOL style

"Deep Sea of Clouds" is a standout

God thank you for waking up this thread. I always forget to listen to them, I was super into them at one point, and they are so often exactly what I want.

I'll check it out too. I've heard and enjoy all their 90s material but I stopped there because it was too overwhelming how much they've put out since

Vinnie, Monday, 14 August 2023 22:27 (eight months ago) link

The FSOL board (not sure if it's still active) had an ongoing project of putting up user-created mixes for some time. There was some really good stuff in there.

I should say, mixes of user-created content.
