UGLY MUSIC FOR UGLY PEOPLE, INDIEFANS FIRST NERVOUS TIPTOE INTO SAMPLED BEATS,REMINDER OF SHIT INDIE DISCOS AND CRUSTIES, AHEAD OF THEIR TIME,NOT AS GOOD AS B.A.D., WHAT DO YOU THINK ?

Sebastian Weetabix, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

sorry, but i'm being dragged to local indie hellhole tonight and im getting flashes of being back in Nam (that's Fenham)

Today i look like peter o'toole dressed as jamie oliver - the shame..

gREBO oTAKU, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

All of the above.

Except they were as good as B.A.D.

Tom, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Dirty Vicar loves Pop Will Eat Itself. Great to dance to and musically innovative (in that combining guitars, rapping, and samples kind of way).

The Dirty Vicar, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yep the breakout of Indie for me was via the Poppies. Made the break from guitars=good, and when they finally sorted out their drum machine problems were absolutely fantastic live.

Spawned one of the stupidest music books every written though - and never quite got to the sampladelic heights they reached on this Is The Day.... You still cannot go to a festival in this country without seeing someone in a PWEI T-Shirt (though they are starting to look a bit manky now).

Nice to see Clint Mansell is making a fine fist of soundtracks now too. His Requiem For A Dream one is one of the best proper scores I have heard in ages.

Pete, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I made a video for them in the late 80s. But I never owned any discs by them. Cokeheads as I recall.

Guy, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

A truly wretched band.

Dr. C, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dud. Mind you B.A.D. are as bad -sigh-.

Omar, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I saw them @ newcastle riverside. @ thee end ov their set, some enterprising sort bounced a bottle off the singer's head. A stream of brummie-accented invective (and blood) ensued, then they went off stage. Then a little old lady came on stage and told us, in heavily accented scots, how terrible it all was, and how the (I kid U not) "poor laddie's" head was all cut.

You can't get much weirder than that.

Never felt like buying any of their rekords, though. I would m,ake some comment abt grebo grrrlz not being as fanciable as goth grrrlz (of whom there were quite a few @ the time, I remember) but I can't actually recall ever seeing a female grebo...

Definitely classic for two albums (_This is the Day..., _Cure For Sanity_). Outside of that, they've never really grabbed me, but both of those albums have a good shot of making my 100 favorite albums of all time list.

Anyway, any group with the good sense to come up with "Not Now James, We're Busy", "Satellite Ecstatica", "92'F (The 3rd Degree)", "1000x No!" Wise Up! Sucker", "X, Y & Zee", "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet", "Touched By The Hand Of Cicciolina", and "Psychosexual" has to be considered classic.

Dan Perry, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Never intended to be taken so dreadfully seriously, which I appreciated. "Hit the High Tech Groove" and "PWEIzation" are great tracks. Still, always preferred the Wonder Stuff.

alex in nyc, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The grebo/goth crossover was worringly evident at our school, norman. Especially amongst the girls.

I think I didn't like PWEI because they were so ugly. Does that make me an insufferable snob?

Nick, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

not at all. they did release, lest we forget, the vile "beaver patrol", which would suggest they were rather ugly on the inside as well.

norman fay, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I loved 'em. But I started with _This is the Day_, which sounds like it was the right thing to do, really.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 27 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Actually you should listen to "Box Frenzy", the one with 'Beaver Patrol' and 'Love Missile F1-11' - sweet.

NYC Alex, why do you even mention the Wonderstuff in this context? I know they are from roughly the same part of England but they have nothing in common musically with PWEI.

so come on .. any ILM reports on recent gigs ?

also - found 'the looks or the lifestyle' on cd last week and plumped up the ca$h ..

sure is a lot ruffer sounding than i expected (no shiny pop produiction a la Cure for Sanity)

- some fine songs wrapped up with the usual PWEI noises ..

so .. does this mean we can now talk about Blaggers ITA, 25th May ?

mark e (mark e), Monday, 31 January 2005 09:23 (nineteen years ago) link

so come on .. any ILM reports on recent gigs ?

Aye, went to the Birmingham gig on the Saturday. 'Twas rather marvellous summary of their, everything from "Beaver Patrol"[1] and "88 Seconds" via a splendid "Their Law" and "Karmadrome" through to "Auslander".

Clint is a bit balder and chubbier, but the rest seem remarkably unchanged, except Graham who appears to be five years younger than he was in 1996.

[1] Now there's something I never thought I'd hear live again... might be worth a thread?

NYC Alex, why do you even mention the Wonderstuff in this context? I know they are from roughly the same part of England but they have nothing in common musically with PWEI.

Quite late in answering this question (does the Dirty Vicar even post anymore?), but I group them together in that they were ex-bandmates, for a start. Secondly, the first album by PWEI was strictly garagey punky-pop without a beatbox or a sample to be heard. They were spawned from the same pool, so to speak. Their respective musics ended up sounding positively polar, though, you're correct.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 31 January 2005 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Since my previous post I've discovered that I adore "Ich Bin Ein Auslander". Also, "I've Always Been A Coward, Baby" is awesome.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'RE PLAYING "88 SECONDS" AT THEIR LIVE GIGS ARGH WHY CAN'T I LIVE IN THE UK????

"the first album by PWEI was strictly garagey punky-pop without a beatbox or a sample to be heard"

Go Box Frenzy ?

memory tells me that was chocka with beatbox and samples eg Hit The Hi-Tech Groove - or am i suffering a severe case of memory overlap ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:26 (nineteen years ago) link

I think there was a retrospective of things like the 'Poppies Say Grrrr!' e.p., which is the sort of material Alex is referring to. Chronologically it would be a first album.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Go Box Frenzy ?

No, that was album #2. First album was:

..tho' it was originally blue'n'yellow, not red.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Whoops, correction, it was released as an LP after Go Box Frenzy, but it was comprised of singles that all pre-dated Go Box Frenzy!.

ah ha ..

grrrrrrr to chronological whatsits ..

was wondering what that red cover release was .. i saw it the other day .. may have to go get it this week now ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I got that Now For A Feast LP for a quid the other day... doesn't sound much like their later stuff, more like C86ish pop punk - see also the Soup Dragons who sounded pretty similar at that time before also changing their sound drastically a couple of years later.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Classic all the way, even the completely outrageous style change for Dos Dedos.. was genius. Best use of Sabbath riff eva.

Greatest album has to be 'Cure For Sanity' imo, i cannot get tired of this.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:53 (nineteen years ago) link

i saw them in that c86 period .. (with Hurrah! supporting) they were shite (grrr) and so i left and chatted to Hurrah! ..
next time i saw them (This is the Hour tour) they were totally awesome live act. but i have to say Poppies say Grr is a great little 7" .. and having those tracks on shiny cd may indeed become this weeks top trip ..

xpost : " ..Cure for Sanity".. .. far too clean sounding for me (though i may be way off here as i haven't heard it in ages which seeing as i do like Looks or Lifestyle album makes sense ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 31 January 2005 15:55 (nineteen years ago) link

The only thing that keeps ...Cure For Sanity from being the greatest album of all time is the it has "Another Man's Rhubarb" on it instead of "Not Now James, We're Busy" or "Satellite Ecstatica".

Has Clint's movie soundtrack work dried up then or something? All those abandoned Darren Aronofsky projects must have been galling.

I didn't mind a bit of the pWEI back in the day, good live band for hormonal teens to mosh up a sweat to, if I can use that phrase. We had a beer with the band just before one of their gigs in a Wolverhampton pub once, Clint was quite personable and friendly. He's still the only one of those Stourbridge/W.Mids band members I would still have a pint with, esp after hering that 'Stourbridge reunion' edition of Round Table on 6 Music the other week. Miles Hunt and Shit-for-brains from Ned's Atomic Dustbin still made me want to force feed them both a cricket bat.

Si Carter (Si Carter), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Mark E - note that Now For A Feast (and Box Frenzy!) were re-released about three years ago with stacks of bonus tracks, so it's probably worth making sure you're getting the new version for VFM sake

Clint's still got plenty of soundtrack work, this just happened because he discovered he could write songs with the others again (ie actually write songs for first time in ten years [The Beats on Lavish's album notwithstanding][note they split in first place coz main writer Graham had split already and Clint chucked a sook that the drummer was bringing in more music than he could]) and so they decided to dip a toe into being a band again for fun in case the writing goes anywhere

however, graham was given the all clear from clint to use the name as he was the heart and soul of PWEI.

Fuzz, Adam and Rich have each done some live work here and there, and everyone-but-Clint did the UK 30th anniversary of This Is The Day tour last year (while a different lineup did non-This shows in the US). I was just saying "lacks energy and conviction of their og stuff" is fairly moot when 4/5 of "them" didn't do the og stuff (indeed, this album is the OG stuff by that specific band).
