Spawned one of the stupidest music books every written though - and never quite got to the sampladelic heights they reached on this Is The Day.... You still cannot go to a festival in this country without seeing someone in a PWEI T-Shirt (though they are starting to look a bit manky now).

Nice to see Clint Mansell is making a fine fist of soundtracks now too. His Requiem For A Dream one is one of the best proper scores I have heard in ages.

You can't get much weirder than that.

Never felt like buying any of their rekords, though. I would m,ake some comment abt grebo grrrlz not being as fanciable as goth grrrlz (of whom there were quite a few @ the time, I remember) but I can't actually recall ever seeing a female grebo...

Anyway, any group with the good sense to come up with "Not Now James, We're Busy", "Satellite Ecstatica", "92'F (The 3rd Degree)", "1000x No!" Wise Up! Sucker", "X, Y & Zee", "Nightmare At 20,000 Feet", "Touched By The Hand Of Cicciolina", and "Psychosexual" has to be considered classic.

I think I didn't like PWEI because they were so ugly. Does that make me an insufferable snob?

Aye, went to the Birmingham gig on the Saturday. 'Twas rather marvellous summary of their, everything from "Beaver Patrol"[1] and "88 Seconds" via a splendid "Their Law" and "Karmadrome" through to "Auslander".

Clint is a bit balder and chubbier, but the rest seem remarkably unchanged, except Graham who appears to be five years younger than he was in 1996.

Quite late in answering this question (does the Dirty Vicar even post anymore?), but I group them together in that they were ex-bandmates, for a start. Secondly, the first album by PWEI was strictly garagey punky-pop without a beatbox or a sample to be heard. They were spawned from the same pool, so to speak. Their respective musics ended up sounding positively polar, though, you're correct.

I didn't mind a bit of the pWEI back in the day, good live band for hormonal teens to mosh up a sweat to, if I can use that phrase. We had a beer with the band just before one of their gigs in a Wolverhampton pub once, Clint was quite personable and friendly. He's still the only one of those Stourbridge/W.Mids band members I would still have a pint with, esp after hering that 'Stourbridge reunion' edition of Round Table on 6 Music the other week. Miles Hunt and Shit-for-brains from Ned's Atomic Dustbin still made me want to force feed them both a cricket bat.

Nope, but a nice shiny double CD from InstantLive of the night dropped thru my letterbox today - nice quality. A friend's getting the DVD, I'll have a peek to see what it looks like...

Clint's still got plenty of soundtrack work, this just happened because he discovered he could write songs with the others again (ie actually write songs for first time in ten years [The Beats on Lavish's album notwithstanding][note they split in first place coz main writer Graham had split already and Clint chucked a sook that the drummer was bringing in more music than he could]) and so they decided to dip a toe into being a band again for fun in case the writing goes anywhere

my older brother had 'this is the day' on tape and i listened the shit out of it. i made sure to check out all the namechecks on "can u dig it?" also. i guess people mock them for being a bit daft but they were ahead of their time! sounded like the future to me in 1990. i dont know much of their stuff outside that album though.

however, graham was given the all clear from clint to use the name as he was the heart and soul of PWEI.
also, pretty sure that Fuzz has helped out the new crew from time to time.

Fuzz, Adam and Rich have each done some live work here and there, and everyone-but-Clint did the UK 30th anniversary of This Is The Day tour last year (while a different lineup did non-This shows in the US). I was just saying "lacks energy and conviction of their og stuff" is fairly moot when 4/5 of "them" didn't do the og stuff (indeed, this album is the OG stuff by that specific band).
