Echolyn - bonafide prog

We just took a show with these guys in May in Philly. They have an amazingly cheesy site but their songs are pretty great (if you like prog and stuff).

I'm predicting prog is the next genre to enjoy an indie revival, the only potential snag being that most indie musicians aren't good enough at their instruments to play prog.

The revival's been kicking awhile

Actually some of the vocals are pretty bad, but the music is good.

I picked up their album "As the World" when it first came out - it was very good, somewhat like old-style Kansas &/or Gentle Giant, really, really good playing , but no grandstanding whatsoever, it was all ensemble playing. Good tunes as well, also very "american" sounding, if that makes any sense. I think it was my favourite album of that year. IIRC the band split shortly thereafter. I was told that "As the World" had sold the kind of quantites that yer average indie band would envy, but it hadn't been enough for s0ny, who dropped them for not seling enough units. I'd read that they'd reformed a couple of years ago, but hadn't picked anything up yet. I should, really.

When they reformed, they cut back on the attempts to emulate the flashy playing and overt prog dynamics of British prog, and augmented the American-ness in their music and with the thematic content of their lyrics--all to their benefit, I would add, because it sounds more like they've found their own voice/style and settled into it comfortably.

Of the albums they've released since, I would say Mei (a 60-minute, one track CD) has some great stuff on it. A little ambitious perhaps and there are some sections I could live without, but it's definitely worth hearing.

this new album is getting pretty insane reviews; I have yet to get a copy but can anyone confirm that it's indeed the greatest thing ever?

seriously, prog dudes, give them a listen. by their second album they already put out a long honkin' prog suite that rivaled "Tarkus" or "Supper's Ready" and they only got better from there. it's basically prog without ego, everything is done for the benefit of the song, they put out these incredibly tight 70+ minute albums where the solo sections are like 10 seconds long, if they even exist at all. imagine if Yes were putting out a stream of excellent double albums during their prime - this is essentially what echolyn does and are still doing.

Yeah, I've grown to love Mei, even though it still sometimes feels like it should've ended about 15 minutes sooner. Never warmed to The End Is Beautiful but the self-titled record (aka "Windowpane") from last year is solid with some particularly outstanding cuts ("Past Gravity", "Island"). This was also one of my first ever pre-orders, which seems to be increasingly commonplace, at least in the prog world.

okay just to respond to myself here, yes, yes it is, I'm stunned by how gorgeous some of the music on there is - the stretch of "Past Gravity", "When Sunday Spills" and "Speaking in Lampblack" just kills me

and "Lotus to Bethlehem" is becoming one of my favorite songs ever (also really like "This is How We Left It" which didn't make the cut)

honestly probably one of my top 5 favorite albums right now
