Let us now praise Tina Turner's 80's comeback 'Grandma in Heat' phase, cf. 'Private Dancer' et al.

'What's Love Got to Do With it' - great, 'Private Dancer,' almost as great, various concert appearances with Mick Jagger where they maul each other and then make faces at the audience like they're surprised - less great.

Private Dancer is flawless, an example of unsurprising craftmanship at its best. I don't think anyone sees her as anything other than a great screamer; you don't go to Tina Turner for subtle interpretations, you go for Vegas showmanship. Which is why she's still underrated.

The next album's "Typical Male" is near-great.

"Two People" is underrated, too.

"Steamy Windows" too. A little of this stuff goes a long ways, but TT's "Grandma in Heat" phase is as good as airbrushed 80s AOR gets.

I'll listen to Ike with Tina...and I'll listen to Ike alone...but Tina alone? I doubt it. Kinda liked it as a teenager, but these days the big drums and synth washes sound mighty dated (even with an 80's revival around the corner). I'll give 1980's Tina props for being a black woman doing rock music (not soul), at a time when that wasn't the standard (still isn't). So..."Private Dancer," huh? No thanks, I'll stick with "It's Gonna Work Out Fine."
