platinum pied pipers/sa-ra/the new downbeat-rnb thing: why don't i like this stuff more?

now obviously from the title, it should be clear that i do like this stuff, just a little bit. (sometimes a lot more.)

really, it's exactly the kind of thing i was looking for, non-flashy rnb with more modernized/hybridized production than the usual indie-rnb shit. (i'm not feeling mainstream rnb too much these days, either.) but for some reason it's not clicking. two main things have come to mind so far:

the incense-n-peppermints lyrics are one, but i guess that comes with the territory.

but mostly these cats don't seem too interested in writing songs. it makes the whole thing wash over me (hence the "downbeat" and not "rnb" or "soul" tag, i guess) and seem kinda half-assed.

i'd like to see these guys hook up with someone from the "real" rnb spectrum, someone with a little more invested in actually getting songs on the radio. (i.e. on a major label.) i have a feeling it might help them step their songwriting game up. (the back-end ballads on the amerie album, for instance, could have used these guys.) (or teedra moses.) (or saadiq.)

maybe it's just gonna end up being like my semi-love for broken beat: a genre i like the idea of more than 50% of the execution.

i suspect two people are going to answer this thread. (and i can guess which ones.)

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I have such a massive backlog now but I'll try and come back to this someday as it sounds interesting.

well, i'm not one of them i'm sure, but, who are you talking about exactly (ha, the broken beat mention is no help, i think i've still never heard a broken beat record)

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:32 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean, in addition to the people mentioned in the thread. er, backstory, i guess?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 13:32 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't really know the backstory. vahid or jaxon probably know more than i do. (or at least they've talked about this stuff before.)

the scary thing is that you could easily reduce this stuff to some kind of press release soundbite "the neptunes X roy ayers" that would send me running for the force and styles 12s.

Can yer give a link to a site or somewhere streaming this, so I might give an ear? As I'm intrigued to hear more at least -- also, re: mainstream r'n'b, just not feeling like much good these days or...?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't heard this stuff yet, but the production would have to be pretty hot to make up for no songs (which is a problem in "indie rn'b" too).

(full disclosure = Teedra kind of washed over me, but she keeps nagging me to listen to her some more)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:36 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, it's not that these guys DON'T have songs (though they do often have hooks or verse in search of songs), but i think there's a reason they're showing up in downtempo radio mixes and not in vibe just yet.

Teedra = grebt. Not so sure about Raphael Saadiq yet. Who else is there to investigate?

It's been a couple of years, but I haven't heard an r&b album I like better than Anthony Hamilton's (where the tracks with the most modern/syncopated beats are actually the ones with a live rhythm section).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 14:59 (eighteen years ago) link

From this end of the spectrum, the only thing I ever heard I thought was really great was the first Spacek album. Unless you count D'Angelo's Voodoo, a record these people haven't come close to. Lots of good intentions, not enough guts & talent to pull it off.

Dwight Trible & the Life Force Trio is a 'legit' soul singer with production by Sa-Ra, madlib, ammon contact, and might be what you are seeking.

I haven't listened to all the artists that you've mentioned, but I like PPP a lot. And I've never been that big a fan of neo-soul, but PPP sounds a little more muscular and adventursome than your average indie-soul artists. It kinda retains the grittier element of the Dilla-inspired Detroit hip hop sound. And I don't know about "incense-n-peppermints lyrics." I haven't really listened to what the vocalists on the PPP album are saying, but the emcee contributions aren't really on a conscious, positive tip. I guess that the hooks could be more pronounced at times. I interviewed Waajeed from PPP and one of the first things he said was, "I hate that neo-soul bullshit."

hi

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

so yeah, i'm absolutely in love with this stuff. but it seems i'm one of the only ones. i think most of it is that one of my all time favorite artists is Jay Dee and i'm always looking for people trying to replicate his sound. i mentioned in the Sa Ra thread how the major complaint of these guys is lack of songwriting, but i just don't even understand what that means. i mean, there's a beat, a chord progression (or not, but a lot of the jazz i love is only one chord, and NEU!). there are vocals, there's sometimes a hook. i mean, coming from someone who loves jungle and dance music, how can you expect it in this genre, but not in that. are you an r'n'b-ist?

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Dwight Trible & the Life Force Trio is a 'legit' soul singer with production by Sa-Ra, madlib, ammon contact, and might be what you are seeking.

my friend just picked this up and told me it's outstanding. i've got the Dwight Trible album from a few years ago but it's more of a Leon Thomas cover album than anything else.

oh, and the Plant Life album is really great. it's definitely got great songwriting. some of it is a bit more soul oriented and less downbeat-rnb than i like, but the album really grew on me. the packaging is absolutely beautiful too. it's got an embossed cover, gold ink and really nice logo and vector graphics inside

uh, further back. do you like a tribe called quest

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:56 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I guess. Is this "conscious" hip-hop kind of stuff or is it neo-soul-ish rnb stuff?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

i wouldn't call it either. people don't know how to catagorize most of this stuff, so they throw it in the neo-soul camp, but it's not really. most neo-soul is trying really hard to relive the stevies, the marvins, the donnys. they're like post-spoken work soul. i find most of it pretty boring, although i dig some of it.

none of the lyrics are concious, but i wouldn't say it's thug either. it is a bit hippy dippy sometimes.

the best i can compare it to is maybe post-a love below. it's taking later period funkadelic with all the weirdness and adding a modern hip hop touch. lots of weird synths. falsettos. Sa Ra has worked with the Neptunes

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, the reason i ask about A Tribe Called Quest is because Jay Dee started producing for them on their later albums (probably not their best albums). he started his own group, Slum Village, that kind of carried on the native tongue production - jazzy, filtered samples, heavy drums. all the lyrics were very misogynistic. it's definitely not indie/backpacker, but people don't know where else to categorize it because they're not guns/bling rap.

do you like Spacek and Vikter Duplaix. this stuff has a lot in common sonically with those acts.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:15 (eighteen years ago) link

is the ppp album actually out? i only have a download.

i think i might be an rnb-ist! actually, i think i just might be thinking about this stuff in the wrong mindset. (i.e. singles instead of albums or mixes.) (or maybe i just don't smoke enough weed anymore.)

i love jay dee, which is why i keep giving this stuff a second chance.

Apparently it came out yesterday, good timing.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't smoke that much weed anymore either, but i think it's pretty obvious that the majority of the music i listen to is definitely weed music. trippy, mellow, dark, sort of avant, lots of effects, repetitive.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:18 (eighteen years ago) link

They're all about that one beat where the hi-hats are shuffling triplets but the kick and snare are syncopated to this tight, straight 16th note feel, shit's crazy.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i like some of the sa-ra stuff (esp "glorious" and "hollywood" i think?) but my prob with it starts when it gets too CLOSE to d'angelo etc. - maybe a matter of falling obviously short when the objective seems more identifiable? but yeah working with teedra moses or somebody could be great. haven't heard the ppp stuff yet.

jones (actual), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:24 (eighteen years ago) link

i am listening to that dj rels record from last year on stone's throw (theme for a broken soul), which is apparently madlib trying to go for the broken beat/west london thing, and it's pretty repetetive but i'm digging it a lot.

Are some of those drums on 'Now or Never' from (Ludacris) 'Stand Up'?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 23:28 (eighteen years ago) link

i picked up the Platinum Pied Pipers album last night. not sure i like all the different vocalists. there's a bit of neo-soul to the whole thing, but i've only listened to it once and it hasn't really sunk in.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 12 May 2005 16:29 (eighteen years ago) link

so i just listened to the PPP album again, and the production is all really nice, the drums hit really hard, but i dunno, this Tiombe Lockhart chick is sorta getting on my nerves. sounds way too much like Jill Scott or something? the Lizz Fields album on ABB reminds me a lot of this a lot also (jay dee thump production, but jill scott vocals). it's not that i don't like JS, in fact i do, but i was hoping for something different. the album's really "nice" but just doesn't get weird enough for my tastes right now. i think there's too much songwriting? hah. hopefully it'll grow on me.

the 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover is pretty great.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Thursday, 12 May 2005 18:33 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm still digging on this album. The beats are pretty hard and the feel is nasty and that's what puts it over the top for me. Some of the singers/mc's are great, some are okay, but I actually like that it keeps getting switched up. Makes it feel more like a production mixtape than anything else and takes the pressure off of the vocalists.

And yeah, samba/r&b 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover is waaaay better than it could have been.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 16 May 2005 18:28 (eighteen years ago) link

this thread title is stolen from right out of my head; i was thinking the exact same thing while listening to the ppr record last night and again this morning. the phrase "wash over me" is pretty accurate - i think i like the way the sounds fit together but i have a hard time finding anything to hang on to. im comforted by the fact that i once felt this way about amp fiddler and (way back in the day), bodily functions, both of which i now love. i think maybe my best hope is the plant life record; ive only given it 3-4 listens but i remember thinking it sounded very promising.

"so yeah, i'm absolutely in love with this stuff. but it seems i'm one of the only ones. i think most of it is that one of my all time favorite artists is Jay Dee and i'm always looking for people trying to replicate his sound."

how many sub-jay dee beats and programming can anyone take though? i hear that sound of his in so many underground producers, i just want them to move past that mellowness, that stacatto drum pattern, and that 'this could be slum village couldnt it?!' mood music.

"i mentioned in the Sa Ra thread how the major complaint of these guys is lack of songwriting, but i just don't even understand what that means. i mean, there's a beat, a chord progression (or not, but a lot of the jazz i love is only one chord, and NEU!). there are vocals, there's sometimes a hook. i mean, coming from someone who loves jungle and dance music, how can you expect it in this genre, but not in that. are you an r'n'b-ist?"

but this doesnt come from jungle and dance, it comes from soul, R&b and hip hop. id say these guys grew up on hip hop, then are trying their hand on R&b and soul type stuff, and it shows in the songwriting, cos its pretty static and mechanical. they havent quite understood that not all music is made like hip hop is. the problem i have with ppp and sa-ra is a lot of their music lacks any sort of momentum, it just glides along, or jogs along, and never really goes anywhere. its all about maintaining a vibe rather than developing a song as such. kinda like a hip hop beat and someone singing rap lyrics. the songs with georgia (i think) on the ppp album are the absolute pits cos of this. shes just rambling on barely strung together words that sound like they should be rapped instead of sing. and the funny thing is that despite their reactionary dissing of neo soul, theyre still close to that sound with their mellowness, their tranquility and their songlessness. (btw, sa ra are not peppermints and incense, lyrically speaking - people should listen closer).

all that said, sa-ra do have a few good songs to their credit, only about 3 or 4 though.

Sa-Ra have a new single/mini-compilation of their production work for Pharaoh Monche, J Dilla and Steve Spacek out now, called "Second Time Around." It is- como se dice?- fucking awesome. Vahid that radio mix was great, much belated thnx for it. After listening to the new Dilla all weekend I listened to the mix again on my ipod on the way to work and I realized I need more of this. Does anyone (you? jaxon?) have any more stuff from Deviation, or any good comps/mixes? There's a DJ who spins this kind of shit pretty regularly at clubs in chicago now and he's pretty great. I think whats so interesting about this stuff (well, in the abstract anyway) is the way its v. much an intersection of varying music fans, a blend of hip-hop, soul and dance that manages at its best to avoid the mushy pitfalls all that implies.

I remember at one point benji b says that "next week" he'll tell the listeners about some compilations and mixes that cover the same ground as he does....but i dont have a next week. :-(

dj language is a little bit too much on the hiphop/rnb side, most broken beat stuff is a little too generic-dancey (weak vocalists?) ...

so, i'm listening to the Georgia Anne Muldrow "Odesi" album. it's really fucked up. it's like Sun Ra + Sa Ra. shit is really out, like June Tyson singing over Jay Dee beats. tons of crazy vocal overdubs. none of the melodies are sticking yet, but i still really like it. jess said the latest Spacek album was whispy like air and nothing there. this is like a harsh gust of wind. her mom sang w/pharoah sanders and i think i heard she was Dudley Perkin's (aka Declaime's) girlfriend. my friend's seen her live and says she puts on an amazing show.

I finally tracked down the track ("Big Fame") Pitchfork panned in their track review section, and while it's definitely a step below "Double Dutch" or the "Hangin' by a String" cover, it's nowhere near as bad as they made it out to be...

this is pretty much sa-ra/andre3000/dudley perkins/many others in a nutshell, just replace latin with soul/funk/etc.

Pressure (Fat Beats Records) is an official mixtape of Black Milk’s previous works – from tracks he did for Pharaoh, Canibus, and SV to cuts from earlier solo efforts. Black Milk hails from the D – and will endlessly struggle with separating himself from J Dilla. T3 said of “Reunion” an SV joint that appears on Pressure: “A lot of people thought that was a Dilla track.”

What's the Science? Is the question we direct to all those that dwell on the Planet Earth! From the Mother Continent of Africa, to the hills of Europe, on over to the wilderness of North America, all the way back to the Coast of Asia, living under the umbrella of Hip-Hop Culture. We ask you all, What's the Science? We are living in a time where Hip-Hop Culture is one of the most powerful forces that exists around us that helps unite people of all races, colors, creeds, religions and schools of thought under one flag. It's time to give proper thanks and praise and reverence to the ERA that raised us and guided this same movement, that still exists today, on the next level. We stand here before you as Students of the same conscious movement that birthed the likes of AFRIKA BAMBATAA, KRS ONE, RAKIM, PUBLIC ENEMY, BRAND NUBIAN, X-CLAN, POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS, KMD, THE NATIVE TONGUE and countless others that brought forth an entire essence that took the world by storm and made it cool to be intelligent. What's the Science? How long will it take us to stand up strong again to make sure that the youth have some substance to feed off in order to grow into powerful, resourceful and responsible adults able to make positive changes to the world in which we live. What's The Science?

So the new PPP record Abundance is around. Hip hop elements are pretty much indiscernible. The music sounds like a live band, sometimes in a straight motown/stax soul kind of way, as in the excellent "On A Cloud", sometimes with cosmic funk keys, as in "Luv Affair". A handclap-doublehandclap rhythm pops up often. Track six, "Sanctuary", is the first song that could be called a downbeat r n' b ballad in the sa-ra mold, with beats, funk fuzz and off-kilter effects that continue into "Ain't No Ifs or Maybes". "The Ghost Of Aveiro" starts like a poetic torch song with sustained notes over Latin rhythms, then after a samba breakdown with dizzy high horns becomes something highly danceable with excited vocals. The double-handclaps re-appear for "Countless Excuses", a sweet poppy soul song of regret backed with spacey synths. Both of these are A+. Fuzz and scuzz returns on "Dirty Secrets", this time with a stompy schaffel backbeat. The two-minute "Goodbye" goes four to the floor with a Kraftwerk keyboard motif, introduces some snares and is in danger of becoming full-on dance music before stopping.

Singing is by Coultrain, Karma Stewart, Jamila Raegan and Neco Redd. It's fifteen tracks, sixteen if you count the hidden one. Clocks in under an hour and still felt a bit long to me on first listen. Definitely interesting though.

new ppp is way better than old ppp. but even then, i like it, but it can seem like its trying to do too much at once.

Yellow Carded (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 15:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Abundance is all right, but Triple P is a lot better imo. All the great personalities that were present on the first record got shafted in favor of anono-soulers.
