Just occured to me. Is house music officially 20 years old yet? And if not, when will it be? (Or if so, when was it?)

I personally consider the first house record to be Jamie Principle's "Waiting On My Angel", which was released in 1985, so yes. House is 20 years old. Sure, there were earlier songs like "Fantasy" and "I Like to Do It in Fast Cars" (both 1983), but those records weren't really all that big.

three years pass...

Michael Freedberg of the Boston Phoenix, the greatest house and disco critic of all time (and almost the only one for a long time), on his new livejournal blog:

THe music of the 1950s had no follow-up. The next phase was Soul, then funk, both terrific but in no way music of the 1950s.

Then came house. House was the 1950s all over again -- though with later rhythm music embedded, and all of it futurized, computered, i-podded, mp3'd. Whatever -- house made me relive, re-taste, re-embed myself in the 1950s.
