"One Was Johnny" was close though.

"Screaming and Yelling"

(this album was a daily ritual 5 or 6 years ago.)

Another vote for "Pierre."

Is "Really Rosie" the show that had the one about the little boy who wanted the doll? Or was that "Free to Be You & Me"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 21 March 2005 01:38 (nineteen years ago) link

That was "Free to Be You and Me"

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 21 March 2005 03:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Gotta be "Really Rosie" itself.

"Pierre" rocks and I can still sing it, though I always liked "Chicken Soup with Rice" a lot too.

The Carole King LP gives me infinite delight. Most especially "Avenue P," minor chord masterpiece. Between that and Sesame Street, I knew I wanted to live in New York by the time I was four.

This was my son's first musical fave rave (Raffi don't count) and a few years later his school cobbled together a stage version for its annual play (his 1st grade class sang "Alligators All Around.")

It looks like you new parents already know what to do... :)

I love Avenue P. But I also love the rocking one about being Dracula's Wife.

A second vote for "Chicken Soup with Rice". It's been a couple of decades since I've seen the film, but that song sticks with me...

ten months pass...
"One Was Johnny." Is there somewhere I can dl this film? It seems to be out of print.

I played Chicken Soup when I was in the sixth grade for my middle school's production of the musical.

Pierre.

I think I once had an online personal with the phrase, "and like Pierre, I care."

galkin, I played Chicken Soup at Rice at Plant once and Mattie gave me shit.

Ave P is not in the movie.

oh wait a minute...The Ballad of Chicken Soup...very dark stuff.

Today our dear friend
Chicken Soup
This very ordinary day
Boiled up a pot of
Chicken soup
And swallowed it away
A-lack! A-day!
O-Woe! Oy-Vey!
He swallowed it away!
Now listen to what I'm gonna say
A little bone, a bitty thing
No bigger than my pinky-
He swallowed hot
From out that pot
In quicker than a winky
He gulped that soup
Let out a whoop!
And fell down croaking
On the stoop
And he Choked!
And he SAGGED!
And he SMOTHERED!
And he GAGGED!
And he let out a SCREAM!
And he let out a MOAN!
Then he cried
'Cause he died
From choking on a bone
On such an ordinary day
Like today
A-lack! A-day!
O-Woe! Oy-Vey!
On an ordinary day
Chicken soup passed away!

that is honestly one of my favorite albums and cartoons ever. I have the CD and VHS and need to transfer it to DVD someday. The DVD available is as close as you can get. I used to go to my public library afterschool in shaker heights and watch that shit on a 16mm print. over and over again. kind of obsessed. the feedback on the amazon is really funny - check it out. parents were complaining maurice sendak was too dark and scared their kids!

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:17 (eighteen years ago) link

kids today are lame if they don't love this.

But yeah, we had an 8mm projector in the days before VCRs and every year for my sister's bday my dad would go to the library and get Really Rosie. For my bday we'd watch Hardware Wars. The only 8mm reels I remember owning were like, 60s footage of the Harlem Globetrotters!

but dude, i'm sure it came up sometime in conversation with Lauren, but I didn't know you were from Shaker Heights. My mother is and my grandmother still lives there.

yeah man we were almost neighbors and we never knew each other! she was a private school girl, i was public. I was a greaser, basically.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 20 February 2006 23:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I got the CD from my library and I just checked and if the catalog is correct (and that is a big if) we have the VHS.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 February 2006 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I got a VHS copy at the thrift store about a month ago! Not the greatest copy in the world, but what the hell. Of course, by this point, Rufus (who is 3) is already so over Rosie. it was the first time I had seen it since the 70's.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 00:18 (eighteen years ago) link

What is Rufus into these days? I suggested that my library get the Jack Johnson "Curious George" soundtrack.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 01:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I want to hear Convoy right now. ~ rufus

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 01:13 (eighteen years ago) link

rufus really loves convoy. we have a mid-70's comp of trucker songs called Put The Hammer Down! and it's by far his favorite thing to listen to. convoy, phantom 309, i'm a truck, all the biggies. he's a trucky kid (and he didn't get it from me. i'm really un-trucky).

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 01:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Ha ha, trucks are so big for the boys. I had a parent tell me her daughter loved trucks as well though, so maybe it's becoming a more equal-opportunity subject. I didn't realize it extended to music as well. Does he like the Donald Crews and Byron Barton books, or has he outgrown them as well?

thirteen years pass...

never listened to RR, or remember reading Sendak as a kid

this is great
