I really dig the feeling I get when I listen to the Pete and Pete soundtrack, which Mark Mulcahy made with Polaris, a band including a few other guys from Miracle Legion. Man, that album brings so many unusual emotions to me. it's happy, autumnal, carefree, conjuring so many romantic images of opportunity and love in the world... it's a weird and blissful feeling that I don't really get anywhere else, oddly enough.

So does this album sound like that, or like Miracle Legion at all?

sorry doctor .. but i have had no previous experience of marks sounds ..so cant compare.

this is very cool old school indie rock, with laidback vibes, and subtle country influences .. in fact this :

"it's happy, autumnal, carefree, conjuring so many romantic images of opportunity and love in the world... it's a weird and blissful feeling that I don't really get anywhere else, oddly enough."

sums it up rather brilliantly.

suspect you are going to love this new one.

You know what's going through my head right now? "The world was so big and I was so small. Your voice was always the loudest of all."

The Polaris Album is ace. Jangly but very innovative. The way he incorporates little nuances like a horn section and circus music is really amazing.

Mark's first solo album is ace, and I own the album Drenched by Miracle Legion which has some seriously ace tracks but is mostly spades.

The Miracle Legion songs "The Ladies from Town" -- is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's from one of their live discs, more accoustic than other stuff. I love Mark's voice, and can't believe he doesn't get more recognition than he does.

Isn't "The Ladies From Town" on Me And Mr Ray?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 22:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it is.
My fav Miracle Legion song is "All for the Best" off Surprise Surprise Surprise.

I'm so happy to see some love here for Mulcahy & Miracle Legion.

I think that's my fave, too, Jazzbo.

I ordered this on a total whim. I was a Miracle Legion fan, sure, but I've never checked out any of his solo stuff. So I get it in the mail and figure I'm in for a pleasant album, probably acoustic folky or a bit of country in style. I put it on and I'm just blindsided. Folk or country doesn't really enter into the equation here. Nor does it sound like Miracle Legion. He dares to flirt with psychedelia and swing/jazz at times. Overall I found that whatever style or twists and turns it takes, I'm enthralled by how inspired it sounds. Just dumbstruck, hanging on his every line (he always was a great lyricist). There's something really special about this guy, something very deep and wise, creative and gifted. When I ordered the vinyl of Surprise Surprise Surprise a few months ago, I was delighted to find an old photo in the package of the band performing live, along with a cap that looked like it had been knitted by hand and still had the needle in it. He's even got a cello on this album and glockenspiel. The guy's got class as far as I'm concerned. Not your ordinary bloke.

I was amused to learn that J. Mascis plays lead guitar on a few tracks (which is fine by me as long as he doesn't sing!) and that Joey Santiago (of the Pixies I assume) plays guitar on that amazing last track "He Vanished"!

So what happened to his wife, does anyone know? The tribute CD is getting mega press and the tracks that I've heard have been great.

The one thing I saw just said that his wife died suddenly. Bad bad news.

I was in CT in the mid-80s and saw Miracle Legion many times. They were an awesome live band.

BTW, the Thom Yorke version of "all for the best" on the tribute CD is strong.

So his new album's out after time away -- and it's REALLY good. And I said as much:

I'd rank it along the John Grant one, actually. Different backgrounds/goals/etc. but definitely a similar impulse at work in terms of reclaiming a past for one's current self.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 19 July 2013 14:51 (ten years ago) link

This is way better than the John Grant. What a great listen.

I wouldn't go that far -- I find Grant's willingness to engage with a broader range of sounds while keeping a core aesthetic more to my taste -- but Mulcahy's just in a sweet spot here that I never would have guessed he'd reach at the time when he was fronting Miracle Legion.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 16:16 (ten years ago) link

Been following Mulcahy since his early Miracle Legion days. This is my favorite solo album of his by far. Nice review, Ned.

Course, wouldn't mind if he performed this one too, since I was obsessed with it for the better part of a year in the late '80s.

Just listened to _Dear Mark J._, after no listens for a couple years, and this is still really good. Ned's review describes it very well, too.

Apartment Murders is slaying me tonight.

What's the lineage of that sound - the huge ringing chords on a lone electric guitar? I got Jeff Buckley and Billy Bragg and ?
