I just bought the 12" of "Club Lonely" and its amazing, I've had the "French Kiss" 12" for awhile and I want to know what other amazing music I've missed out on ... help me find some kickass singles.

"Club Lonely" is gorgeous.

I'm super-partial to the Kenlou 12" remix of "Saved My Life." At least the first three minutes. But the original version is great, kind of dictionary-definition uplifting.

I'm only familiar with the stuff from the L'il Louis and the World album ...
but man, "Blackout" and "I Called U" still get me in a tizzy. Never mind "air guitar" ... when I hear those tracks I start "air preaching". I get way too worked up.
Sorry if I'm not telling you anything new.

The saxophones on Club Lonely...so satisfying.

Every couple months I come across one song that I become absolutely obsessed with...the last one was Nick Straker Band's "A Little Bit of Jazz." This song is better, perhaps.

I'm just getting over Luther Vandross' "Are You Using Me" that's on Masters at Work's In the House compilation. Satisfying horns there, too.

"Saved My Life" and "I Called U"... oh, oh, oh, OOOOH.

Isn't that Little Louie Vega? Not the same guy. (No disrespect - MAW are awesome.)

Anyway, djdee, if you can get "I Called U" on 12" vinyl, the narrative and conversations are expanded across 3 cuts - fantastic stuff.

Oh yeah...the Luther nod was apropos only of dee's comment about becoming obsessed with a single track. I was just stating my most recent example, not talkin good Lil' Louis (who's so clearly Chicago, anyway).

But seriously, check that shit out. It blends perfectly with "Wonderful Person," too (surprise, surprise, but a good blend is a good blend).

Ah. I get you now! On a similar note, I'm REALLY digging Phoenix's "If I Ever Feel Better". I missed the boat on Phoenix when they came out, but this song is just perfect to me - I found it via the new Orland Oye DJ Kicks compilation.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope you're listening to the album (i.e. not-interrupted-by-Erlend) version.

"I hope you're listening to the album (i.e. not-interrupted-by-Erlend) version. "

Actually, I DL'ed the album mix after purchasing the DJ Kicks disc, with plans to get the Phoenix record when I have a bit of extra cash.

I didn't mind Erlend's vocal harmony, but I wish they he'd mixed out instead of slamming into the next record - the string outro on the album version is beautiful and exactly what the song needs at that point.

Do you have the Erlend comp? It's my new favourite CD.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, the Erlend disc is nice (I'm sure it's been discussed a lot here). Hate the Avenue D track, though, and as you touched on, not all the mixing is satisfying, but it's a sturdy comp. I'm in total house mode now, though, so I haven't listened to it in while.

Rich, Friday, 20 August 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

needing more tracks here! I've only got a couple to track down, he's gotta have more than this, right? I overheard a guy who works at gramaphone talking about how LL was his favorite producer.

I'd completely forgotten about 'I Called U' - I have it on 7" somewhere!

'Blackout' is completely amazing and scary (I think it's on the B-side?).

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 21 August 2004 10:12 (nineteen years ago) link

he was capable of some of the sexiest most beautiful house music, as well as some of the most avant-garde banging techno. Stuff like Video Clash and War Games are totally bizarre. I have like, 4 or 5 pressings of French Kiss on different labels with different mixes and b-sides. The I Called U 12" is just amazing, The Conversation has been mentioned and But U Went to the Party is one of the funniest, weirdest things ever pressed on vinyl. The flipside features the totally cool The Story Continues, which has spoken parts about relationships, and Why'd U Fall, which is also really cool.

He worked with Marshall Jefferson on 7 Ways to Jack and one website says he may have co-produced The House Music Anthem.

He was also an incredible DJ, there are some mixes on http://www.deephousepage.com

Last night I went to hear Byron Stingily, Kenny Bobien, and Marshall Jefferson!!!!!!!!!!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 21 August 2004 14:17 (nineteen years ago) link

whoa, did they do "that's the way love goes"???

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 21 August 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

'whoa, did they do "that's the way love goes"??? '

You mean "That's The Way Love Is"??? No, but Byron did sing "Devotion". Kenny and Byron were fucking stellar. Marshall did not perform but spun a wicked DJ set with a ton of classics.

Great crowd - people from all walks of life, including this group of thirtysomething black guys and their girlfriends who were amused by this weird little white dude (that would be me) who knew all the words to these classic house tunes. First I got funny looks, then I got high fives. A good night made all the more significant by the fact that I'd been feeling shitty and angsty all week.

you just got that today? isn't that record like 20 years old?

Surprisingly for a record that's on an underground label and has been out of print for ages, it isn't widely available. Asshat.

Whoever did it is an artist or DJ manager, if he's genuinely ended his career then that's a lot of lost earnings he can take him for.

He's having a gig in here in August, so it seems the hearing loss didn't end his career, thankfully! I was thinking of going here, has anyone heard him spin lately?
