i've loved 'free from the city' since i got it on saint etienne's "the trip" compilation, and finally found a copy of "good thing lost" yesterday! this is marvellous.
highlights: happy island that's where i went wrong there's no blood in bone a good thing lost what can the matter be?

Worth grabbing the Chessmen stuff too...
― Saxby D. Elder, Monday, 21 May 2007 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link
'There's No Blood In Bone' is amazing. The other stuff I heard wasn't really that exciting.
― emil.y, Monday, 21 May 2007 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link
'no blood in bone' is surely the weirdest and most dramatic. much of the rest is quite tame, with the occasional flash of oddness.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=MwO-6t_FBsY"Where Evil Grows" (Introduced by Kenny Rogers!) is probably my second favorite song of theirs...
I have a DVD loaded with this stuff that I found on some torrent site. This is about the best thing on it. Youtube has a lot of good PF stuff!!

Thanks for the link Saxby! "Evil" was always my favourite of theirs. I found a vinyl copy of Poppy Seeds just last month. (Which I owned on 8-track tape years & years ago.)

An article and an interviewwith Poppy Family guitarist Craig McCaw, who is still a face around town in Vancouver. There's some interesting historical details about the band including the fact that before they had a drummer the percussion was provided by Susan slapping her thigh with a bean pod.

well isn't Canada adorable!
is the A Good Thing Lost compilation the best place to start if you want to hear some of their lesser-known cuts? or is it worth hearing the original albums?
― macklemore looks something like you (unregistered), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 03:10 (nine years ago) link
I'd say get the compilation - most of the first album and more than half of the second album are on there anyway, and let's face it, almost all their songs are "lesser known". I haven't ever listened to the original album of Poppy Seeds - it's hard to find a copy.

"A Good Thing Lost" is a great place to start, probably all most would need. In Canada, the LP's are pretty easy to find dollar bin records. The "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" LP is my favourite - has the trippiest stuff like "Happy Island" and "There's No Blood in Bone" - tabla and sitar and weird moogs plus solid AM radio hooks - but I'm also cool with the more straight-up folky pop.

So Susan Jacks is still singing? I like her voice. I like "Where Evil Grows"...being of that era every song transports me...
― Against Hungry Children (I M Losted), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 04:13 (nine years ago) link
She's still singing but not recording AFAIK.
I think, like most people, I was probably originally drawn in by the dark psych-folk stuff but their more conventional songs are equally, if not more, stunning - Winter Milk, I'll See You There, Another Year Another Day, etc.

Poppy Family singer Susan Jacks passes away at 73 https://t.co/ZiRpEJrQUh— The Vancouver Sun (@VancouverSun) April 26, 2022
R.I.P. Susan
"There's No Blood In Bone" was a mix cd staple for me for many years (when people still made those). I never really embraced any other Poppy Family stuff like I did that song, but I grabbed a couple of her solo records off soulseek this afternoon and I positively love this one!

I probably posted about this on the show's thread: "Where Evil Grows" in Killing Eve (first season, I think) was the highlight of the entire show's run for me.

Johnny - prefer the Poppy Family version, but cool to hear Terry's first go at it:
