It'll hafta be ultra-obscure because I'm pretty well-versed on the subject of witchy folk / psych, but I really need to hear some more. Scott?

Momus.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I have heard the newer band Spires That In The Sunset Rise sound sort of like Comus. I think I heard them described as an all-female Comus in Blastitude, and their press release refers to them as "Manson-esque harpies". Sounds promising. Not to try to hijack this thread or anything, but do they sound like Comus and does anyone have any thoughts about them otherwise?

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, I've heard them. They sound a little more like Angelblood Unplugged than Comus to me. That Eclipse record is decent but I was expecting a little more. Word has it that solo CD by one of the mmebers - Tar Pet - is INSANELY good. Gotta grab that one one of these days. Psyched to see them at Pasture.

Passssttturee. Roger, when are you in Bloomington? Theoretically I could meet up with you guys there and chill, visit my friend north of bloomington and then go to pasture. unless yr playing there theeee day before pasture, in which case i will meet up with you at pasture?? i'm gonna be so bummed if i can't make it. do i HAVE to pre-order tickets? (probably do if i want the cds & whatnot, eh?)

is that that thing in nebraska or wisconsin or something?

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:18 (nineteen years ago) link

Wisconsin.

I think if you want the compilation cd you do, but I doubt such a thing will 'sell out' - i mean, it's ACRES. Needless to say we're most psyched about that gig (tho Greh's new crib in Detroit oughta be a blast) - I STILL don't have the exact tour dates but when I get them I'll either post them here or email you...I'm terrible with geography and planning things and booking shows and whatnot...

I don't think i've ever really run across band that sounds quite like Comus. They're sort of in a league of their own. Some vaguely similar stuff i could recommend would be. The Trees- Christ Tree, sort of dark, mystical jesus-folk- no relation to the UK Trees. Changes- Fire of Life has it's moments too. Some sort of Process Church related psych-folk band, not much info to go on with my copy of the LP. you can check this website for more info on them, http://www.fluxeuropa.com/changes.htm
Forest whose two albums Forest and Full Circle are available on a two-fer i believe is also up that same alley.
On a slightly different tangent Extradition's Hush is one of my favorite oddball psych-folk albums and I'd highly recommend it if you've not heard it.
Oh and the Taralie Dawn's Tarpet is vry nice from what I remember of it. I'll have to dig it out tomorrow and give it another spin.

dialecticbricks (dialecticbricks), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:22 (nineteen years ago) link

BTW, you're probably alright familiar with the bands i just mention. Wish i could help more I wish there were more in the Comus vein myself.

dialecticbricks (dialecticbricks), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Aside from one song ("Do Not Walk in the Rain") I really hate Forest. Kinda alwys seemd like a really pale ISB imitation to me.

That Changes record is the only one I've never heard of - is it really connected to the Process Church?? Damn. Hitting the link now. Much obliged

Oh wow they're down with Moynihan. That certainly ups the creepy quotient considerably.

My cousin is a good friend of his.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:26 (nineteen years ago) link

the trees aka "trees community." it's on soulseek, and a reissue and unreleased stuff is in the works.

i think that tar pet lady was in the unshown, which was plastic crimewave's thing a while back. blows his newer stuff off the map.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:26 (nineteen years ago) link

nothing sounds like comus. let's just all accept it and move on into the bleak future.

(my standard answer to this thread: jan dukes de grey, and the song "night clouded moon" by diabolus which sounds like comus tull)

Motherhead Bug - Zambodia

have you heard this, roger?
that's the closest to comus i can think of

Michael Dubsky, Thursday, 1 July 2004 06:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Jan Dukes de Grey seconded, especially the second album, Mice and Rats In The Loft. I've heard Mormos mentioned in the same sentence as Comus too, but I haven't actually heard their stuff. Dunno what else. Mark Fry perhaps on some of the longer tracks, but still a billion miles away from the bloody heaviosity of Comus.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:31 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe the soundtrack to "Wicker Man"? also there's this Baltimore band called Long Live Death who i have yet to hear but supposedly rate Comus as a big influence. a couple guys from the Oxes are in it, pretty sure there is a cd out.

sherm, Thursday, 1 July 2004 08:18 (nineteen years ago) link

the more recent Current 93 folk stuff sort of sounds like Comus too.

here is amg's review of Long Live Death - "To Do More Than God...to Die"

i don't think the world needs/can handle another comus.

two years pass...
Come on then - are these two CDs worth picking up?

I ain't ever heard Spoils of War either.

So mad, I was going to make the Momus joke.

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 November 2006 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Well if it's any consolation, you were only beaten to the punchline by 29 months.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 16 November 2006 21:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Spoils of War >>>>>>> Mormos. but Mormos aren't bad. sort of like a lesser Incredible String Band infused with the sensibility of the Holy Modal Rounders. i'm partial to everything James Cuomo touched, even that weird ejazz CD.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Thursday, 16 November 2006 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

one of Mormos' vocalists - i want to say her name was Annie Hat, or something? - had the witchiest voice ever. almost unbearable. James' voice and delivery are cool but way hippie.
Mother's Wrath >>> Wall, btw.

Ah, okay - thanks!

NickB (NickB), Friday, 17 November 2006 06:50 (seventeen years ago) link

i never got mormos. just tedious shit. or so i thought the last time i tried them.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Friday, 17 November 2006 07:54 (seventeen years ago) link

there's some quality there. and, yes, quite a bit of tedious shit. but might be worth another try.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Friday, 17 November 2006 12:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I also never got Mormos. Seemed really weak, kind of half-assed and not particularly memorable.

i've never heard mormos, but this description makes them sound like the greatest band ever!

lsd sky chefs (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 17 November 2006 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Except the lyrics are bland/unfunny, the arrangements are lackluster and the pricetag on the orig LPs is absurd.

one year passes...

the first exuma album. i mean, not really, but crazy guy with an acoustic guitar howling in a weird voice. "mama loi, papa loi"!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 20 July 2008 07:18 (fifteen years ago) link

ten years pass...

I recently got an old CD of Emtidi's 1972 album Saat, and track #4 "Love Time Rain" really really sounds like Comus!
