There's a piece debussy wrote for a music contest, called "Rhapsody", I think. It's gorgeous. Strauss wrote a duo concertante for clarinet and basson at the end of his life. The first movement is beautiful. I like Brahms's clarinet quintet and clarinet sonata, too.

Eric Dolphy played a beautiful bass clarient. It's a big, bulky instrument which he managed to play with swan-like elegance.

He did a fair number of slow, solo pieces (or ones without a rhythm section) for bass clarinet. None are particularly well known or jazz standards, but they could be, they've got the sort of lyrical grace.

In a non-jazz realm, Jeff "Antennae Jimmy Semens" Cotton played some sublimely shivery bass clarinet, in addition to his always fine slide guitar, on "Blue Form" and a couple of others from the first Mu album. And unlike former employer Captain Beefheart, he actually knew how to play the thing for real. (And I say this as a huge Beefheart fan.)

Good call on that Debussy piece, Baravelli. Also a Leonard Bernstein Sonata which is gorgeous and floaty.

The end of Radiohead's Life In A Glass House to thread. And the bass clarinet solo in Primal Scream's Get Duffy is one of the few genuinely surprising moments in their music. And THE PRIVATE PSYCHEDELIC REEL!

one year passes...

As a former schoolboy clarinet player who hated his instrument and the crummy sound it made whenever he blew into it (no embouchure, darlings), the lack of groovy aspirational Clarinet Pop was a matter of some distress. (If I had a pound for every well-meaning grown-up who said "Ah, but what about Acker Bilk", etc etc)

Anyway, the first half of the original 12" extended version of Soft Cell's "Say Hello Wave Goodbye" is basically one long clarinet solo, and it's actually not that bad at all.
