...And Justice for Jason

I'm hesitant to even mention it since Larz's flying monkeys will swoop down to take my computer, but has anyone had the opportunity to listen to ...And Justice For Jason? Some bass player with time on his hands (and no, that isn't a redundant phrase) took the liberty of laying down the bass to the infamous tinny-sounding Metallica album.

I'm a grown man now, not fifteen-years old like I was when I first turned my nose up to this record. But I would really like to hear this record, shy of me sitting down some weekend and doing this.

Has anyone heard this, and is it worth an old Metallica fan hunting it down?

/still prefer Cliff anyway.

Just a gimmick, not worth the time.

yeah, what you really want is like six subwoofers and a good graphic EQ, then you can kind of feel the ghost of a bass guitar maybe.

what's the big deal, i don't hear much bass in any mid-late 80s metal/thrash anyway

I guess the good thing is that on this project, we'll get to finally realize that all Jason Newsted was doing was doubling the guitar and that his bass playing was FUCKING BORING...

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 03:01 (sixteen years ago) link

if/when this gets remastered, it's probably going to sound all numetal.. but from what i understand it's not a mastering issue but the recording itself.

i never thought to myself "boy, this needs more bass" when listening to "and justice for all".

pipecock, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 03:05 (sixteen years ago) link

yea, I mostly thought "why is the title track almost ten minutes long when all it is is the same verse and chorus over and over again"

ahahaha bo jackson, two classic comments in the one short thread. well done you

i've always thought to myself "why is this record so stiff sounding?", but that's more to do with song structures than actual recording/mastering processes. i still quite like 'justice' though. some classic stuff there

remaster = not that much better sounding? feel like I was more easily able to hear the improvement on the KEA/RTL remasters.

Justice is what it is. You either love it or hate it. I love it, and listening to the "Work In Progress Rough Mix" tracks, which have more bass than the final versions, proves that as BJO said upthread more than a decade ago, "all Jason Newsted was doing was doubling the guitar and that his bass playing was FUCKING BORING..."

I still love it, even tho I feel it's a cut below the two previous. I wish there was more thrash in this vein (Artillery sometimes scratches similar itches)

The only comparable sounding record I've found so far is Cowboys From Hell, you gotta ignore the shitty vocals tho.

I rate Justice at least equal to MOP and RTL fwiw.

During that long YouTube interview the band did with Fricke, Hetfield admits he tried to get Newsted to mix it up with his basslines, to play around the rhythm guitar, but he would have none of it. He was an excellent bassist for Metallica, but his approach, on Justice especially, was more workmanlike than artistic.

i did see a video where someone rewrote the basslines to the album in the style of cliff burton, that was more interesting than jason's actual basslines

I think the record is brilliant, it's a weird sound and vibe, very mechanical and cold but it works, I don't think trying to Monday morning quarterback the mix is going to make it better

Basically unperson otm it is what it is

I heard that on Spotify the other day and thought, oh it's Hotel Caliilayla '94 all over again.

But I didn't realize they recorded it on a Zoom call!

pplains, Thursday, 21 May 2020 02:29 (three years ago) link

They definitely didn't record it on a zoom call

It was hyperbole.

pplains, Thursday, 21 May 2020 04:06 (three years ago) link

it kinda reminds me of the acoustic version Lenny Kravitz did of "Are You Gonna Go My Way?", but if instead of coming up with a good arrangement for it, Lenny stayed up all night playing video games instead
