The Downward Spiral

The Fragile

JesusMaryChain, Monday, 2 February 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

Uh...... are they "classics" or "duds".....I thought the damn posting mechanism would clarify for me. Convenience, please.

They're all classics.

I'm glad we're all in general agreement here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

(Though I actually think The Fragile might yet be the best album he's done, even though I didn't live inside it as much as Downward)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry to break up the general agreement, but my blood wants to say hello to you!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:43 (twenty years ago) link

They're all neat, and I'm waiting for the All The NIN hits That Sound Like Dirty INXS Songs comp, but I must complain of filler on all of these. Plus I don't like the uncatchy screamy stuff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:44 (twenty years ago) link

but my blood wants to say hello to you!

Ew, put that away.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:45 (twenty years ago) link

Isn't that how the US reacted to The Fragile?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:51 (twenty years ago) link

The true test of a nin fan is if you can stomach The Purest Feeling demos. (Lately, I really like the live "acoustic" version of 'the Big Come Down' floating around the net.)

(You mean aside from that whole debut at number 2 thing, right?)

TrentLuv (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

that wasn't the US that put it at no. 2, that was the trench coat mafia. The US is what made it slide down the charts immediately after, which actually I thought was kind of unfair, cuz I thought that We Should Be Together song was fine proto-Linkin Parkage (at time I would have called it "middle school angstage" but same diff).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago) link

The Purest Feeling demos

MAAAAAAAAAYBE, maybe JUST ONCE, I'll GET what's COMING to MEEEEEEEEEE.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:05 (twenty years ago) link

That includes David Bowie feeling "I thought I wrote Crystal Japan," of course. ";-)" (Also: La Mer is nother great trent instrumental!!)

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:10 (twenty years ago) link

Anyone who can listen to "A Warm Place" and feel nothing, has no soul and should bugger the eff off. S'there

well that includes me, so here we are.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

filler¿ tell me what nin songs you consider filler. please. anthony.
skip the fragile tho.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

I'd rather listen to "vletrmx21" to "A Warm Place," thanks.

Leee Majors (Leee), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:17 (twenty years ago) link

Great bad, particularly "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Closer". "The Fragile" would possibly belong in that thread about turning an average album into a classic one by removing half the tracks...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:19 (twenty years ago) link

I can't, Dyson, its been ages since I've listened to 'em. But I didn't even like "March Of The Pigs" so don't mind me.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:21 (twenty years ago) link

In Praise of.....the BROKEN e.p. by Nine Inch Nails

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:37 (twenty years ago) link

Geir, you know that thumping sound that makes Closer so much the sexy? It's a beat! Rhythm is good!

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:38 (twenty years ago) link

I think a special honorary mention should be given to Maxwell's cover of "Closer," which while overlong, does find him adding lines about how you and him should "do the freak-ay."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:42 (twenty years ago) link

I just recently heard Maxwell's cover of Kate Bush's emotionally celestial "This Woman's Work," and he should be pistol whipped into blubbering submission and forced to drink a thermos of his own urine for that particular particular affront.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:44 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, particular!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:44 (twenty years ago) link

dude, he totally calls her "the bomb" on his Unplugged EP. Respect was given and respect is due!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:46 (twenty years ago) link

just his own urine, alex¿ you're getting soft.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:49 (twenty years ago) link

And for that alone, he should have his vomit-drenched ashes spread on unhallowed ground and then fertilized with the rancid dung of an incontinent warthog.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:50 (twenty years ago) link

Um, yeah. The Maxwell cover is great.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:51 (twenty years ago) link

I still love NIN. This is probably how I would rate them:

1. Perfect Drug single / Lost Highway soundtrack (probably in my top 5 songs ever)
2. Broken
3. Fixed
4. Pretty Hate Machine
5. The Downward Spiral

I do not rate The Fragile; it is okay, but I do not own it and would not ever like to hear it again. And Things Falling Apart should be DESTROYED DESTROYED DESTROYED! omg soooo bad.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:17 (twenty years ago) link

Oh I forgot to put Further Down the Spiral! That should go after PHM, before TDS.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:18 (twenty years ago) link

The two "remixes" on Further Down the Spiral are the only Aphex Twin other than Windowlicker that I can stand to hear anymore.

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago) link

See how NIN makes me indulge my rockism!?!?

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago) link

You forgot to mention Still -- to which I listen right now. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:47 (twenty years ago) link

I've never owned the Fragile, but someone's copy is usually around. Whenever I put it on, I usually think 'meh' at first, then there are always some fantastic tracks that I've completely forgotten about.

I agree that the Perfect Drug is definitely one of their best tunes (damn, Trent would have become a jungle producer...).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 05:53 (twenty years ago) link

I've never heard Still Ned, is it good?

Dan I., Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:11 (twenty years ago) link

I like it -- it's theoretically the 'low key' album, not quite NIN unplugged obv, but the reworkings of older songs aim at generally more stripped down/slower takes. Personally I think the version of "And All That Could Have Been" here is the keeper.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:20 (twenty years ago) link

I've never been able to get past Reznor, whose voice and lyrics I find just plain awful (actually this is my problem with basically 90% of what got released on Wax Trax/TVT.) I imagine that instrumental versions of some of this stuff could be okay, but frankly I can't imagine ever really caring enough to find out if such a thing existed.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 06:33 (twenty years ago) link

The Purest Feeling demos

D'oh! I paid way too much for that disc back in high school & upon listening even as a massive fan was like.. WTF???? However I did make a profit reselling it several years later to some random NIN obsessive in Japan.

I think "March of the Pigs" is my favorite moment of theirs. The video's pretty funny..

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:21 (twenty years ago) link

Wow, that Maxwell cover is horrible. I had such high hopes too. :( A Trent produced Maxwell version would be sweet as hell I bet.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 07:37 (twenty years ago) link

I never got into the Fragile. I sort've gave up after "the Perfect Drug" (which is, admittedly, fantastic...especially the drum break.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago) link

_The Fragile_ is 100% worth getting if only for "We're In This Together Now", "Into The Void", and "The Wretched".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago) link

Wow, that Maxwell cover is horrible. I had such high hopes too. :(

B-but what about the double time, 4 on the floor gospel bit?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:17 (twenty years ago) link

The Fragile tour was pretty good. When I saw him in NYC, Manson came out onstage to sing "Starfuckers, Inc." and the crowd went wild, which was kind of funny. I own a lot of his stuff (all three full-length albums, the live thing, and Broken) but I never ever feel the urge to actually listen to any of it.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago) link

That performance is a hidden track on the DVD. Good stuff.

wonder if the instrumental release of the fragile is close enough to the one with vocals to extract out the vocal track

Listening to the supposedly noisier one now. I don't hear a vast difference between it and the quiet/pretty one.

If and when CD versions are made available, I will buy them, but mostly for completion's sake.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 26 March 2020 19:00 (four years ago) link

Locusts definitely more stressful and abrasive on a cursory listen. I turned it off after a few tracks, not in the headspace.

Listened to all of Together, on the other hand. Nice and moody, but I doubt I'll ever go back to it.

windows 10's support works ok as long as it's not a zip with a ton of files or high compression -- so, good enough for 90% of cases

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 1 April 2020 01:01 (four years ago) link

Locusts sounds a lot more soothing than Together to me (also agree it's one of the best things he's done). One of the tracks on Together has this really high frequency tone overlaid on top that's bad enough that I have to skip it.

three months pass...

I tend to play my music on album-shuffle, so I never quite know what I'm going to get. My wife was chilling on the sofa by the stereo speakers while I think something mellow like Can's "Soon Over Babaluma" was playing, but then things got a little quiet and I couldn't quite make out what had queued up next. I look at what's about to play on my phone and see it's "The Downward Spiral" about to blargh out, so I quickly hit skip. "That was a close one," I told her. "You almost got Nine Inch Nailed!"
