I'm listening to it now for the first time, it's good so far. do you like Stereolab? If so you'll like it, probably. It is missing Mary though.

It's my favorite album of release of theirs since Dots And Loops, if not Refried Ectoplasm. Never gets annoying like Emperor Tomato Ketchup did and just went I'm starting to get bored a really nice unexpected new beat or hook comes along. I'm impressed that these guys have staged a comeback - I really assumed they'd be a shit factory from here on out.

you will like this one.

It doesn't have any of the jazzy instrumentation that Sound Dust had, which is good; I really like Sound Dust but they didn't need to make it again. This one reminds me more of Dots and Loops than any of the other records (I like Dots and Loops, I know others don't). It's pretty poppy.

This one reminds me more of Dots and Loops than any of the other records (I like Dots and Loops, I know others don't).

I don't but I do like this one quite a bit. It's a bit like the Cocteau Twins at this point, Stereolab is -- another single, another album, yay.

Pitchfork review I did of it. Basically, the deal is, I like this period of Stereolab, and this album is good even if I kind of already knew what I was in for.

I am a little surprised by how much I am enjoying this. These may be their best songs since ETK, some great guitar work (which has been buried for so long).

one year passes...

This is one of the only Stereolab releases I don't have, along with Sound Dust. What does Margerine sound closer to: the earlier Transient era or the later Cobra era? While I like everything the band has put out (Emperor Tomato Ketchup is by far my least favorite release of theirs, oddly enough), Dots & Loops and Cobra... are probably my two favorite releases. Also, what's the general consensus on this album? I haven't heard much talk since it came out.

Hmmm, I acquired a copy of this when it came out but still haven't knowingly heard more than that single. This is not particularly noteworthy except that the 'Lab sustained the younger indie-schmindie me through much of the nineties. I'm not sure what this means.

Good to see someone else on the "D&L/Cobra > ETK" wagon though. : )

I've never felt any great compulsion to listen to it since the initial period of wearing it in. It's a good album, but they consistently put good albums out. I don't think they've made a grotesque misstep in the last ten years or so, at least not where their albums are concerned, so it'd have to be thoroughly excellent for me to muster up great enthusiasm. Some very nice stuff on it, though - "La Demeure" and "The Man With 100 Cells" come to mind.

Eclipse is an odd one. I found it more readily accessible than Sound-Dust(which took me months of on-off listening to really "get"), but somehow I don't feel compelled to revisit it very often. It has the feeling of being a "getting back into the groove" album for the band, to get them used to the idea of carrying on as a Mary-less group. As such, it occasionally lapses into Stereolab-by-numbers territory, but there's nothing really wrong with the album. It just seems to drift by without making much of an impression.

I really loved margerine eclipse although like someone already mentioned, I knew what to expect. for me, that didnt stop me from thoroughly enjoying it.
I highly reccommend Sound Dust as well, I didn't find it iniaccessible at all & Long Life Love is one of my favorite tracks of theirs.

Fore me, Margerine as a whole doesn't seem up there with the greats. Although along with the Instant O EP and the tour EP there is a batch of fantastic tracks;

Also, word to Christian ... As for albums I'd much sooner recommend Sound Dust. Frustrated me at first, but after a few listens, started to get it and really, really enjoy it. Not really a continuation of 'Cobra' -- it's completely different. I consider it one of the best.

About 15 years ago I went through a ridiculous project of going through my digital music collection and deleting every track I didn't love, Margerine Eclipse was one of maybe five LPs where I didnt delete a single track.

The recent 2 disc cd version is the best of the recent reissues to pick up on cd and play as loud as possible. Sounds like it's playing right inside your head at times.

I hear the dual mono recording means you can listen to one channel or the other and get two different stripped-down versions of the album. That sounds pretty neat, but I'm too lazy to try and hear it that way (no balance control on my receiver).
