Radiohead and globalisation

Just received an email from someone wanting info on Radiohead and globalisation for a school media studies project (presumably other ILMers got it too). Apart from the fact school kids should be doing real work like carpentry or hanging around amusement arcades being pursued by strange men with a squint, what should I respond (not that I'm going to)?

Apart from the fact that Thom Yorke's read No Logo, they are signed to a global conglomerate (Thorn EMI) and are loathed and loved across the globe.

Radiohead appear to be driven by wariness of 'globalisation' but I sense that what's really frustrating them is the 'broken promises' of the current gov't in their homeland, and consequent 'militant apathy' of their burnt-out, resentful constituency (Radiohead's, that is). Not that there's anything wrong with being apathetic and resentful, of course.

I was shopping in Bed, Bath and Beyond (6th Avenue) the day after the terror attack and they were playing that Radiohead song where Thom sings 'this isn't really happening'. It just seemed like the perfect song of collusive denial. We are all, like Radiohead, in cahoots with international capitalist cartels. Like Radiohead's label's parent company, they often do stuff like sell arms. Our shopping turns into killing, somewhere else in the world. We disapprove, but are powerless to do anything about it. So we whine, and encourage our artists to whine. And we shop to the sound of their whining. 'This isn't really happening'.

The last two Radiohead records have made me feel desperately angry yet utterly impotent and powerless. I suspect this was what they were going for, so I count them as successes. I like 'em.

Well, Thom Yorke has that lazy eye thing going on, and he hasn't O.D.'ed on anything - so, he's a sober tragic figure. Look out Neil Diamond. A star is born 2001. Jeez, ya gotta at least admire Radiohead though!!! I can't be THAT cynical and chalk it up to simple whining. Great lyrics and you get the feeling that they don't shop at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Yuck yuck.

One small problem with your answer, Momus -- if this is "Idioteque" you're referring to, the line is actually 'this *is* really happening.' Which surely changes things. ;-)

But Neddy, if I was in charge of the "Bed, Bath & Beyond" PA system, I'd go for the more soothing "How to Disappear Completely"- in which case the line reads: "This isn't happening" and Momus's dissection holds true. So, it all comes down to a "really".
