Mandatory Affirmative-Action Quotas for Record Collections

As in "everyone's record collection by law MUST contain a certain amount of (x) reflecting the population" etc.

Good idea? And assuming this happened what do you think the effects would be?

I have been struggling with this. I own alot of music. But the African American music i own is Jazz or Blues . I need to know more hip hop but i really do not like most of it.

everyones collection should be at least 5 % country/folk though

I'd laugh if it was funnier. I'm too busy being paranoid about the government, though.

Bad idea - I'd end up with too much Chart Pop in my collection.

What a bizarre question. I'm really underrating the Arabs in my record collection.

What, you don't have any Om Kalsoum?

dave q, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Do you get fined if you trade it a year later for something more local?

Baaad idea. It'd be nice for folks to be well-rounded, but that isn't going to happen. And how much bullshit gets flung when a musicologist with little interest in, say, indie-rock, owns a copy of _Slanted & Enchanted_? If that's all they like, then phnyeeah - not much is going to change that, and enforcing a quota is just going to irk people. Similar to how workplace quotas seem to irk people, actually - and I do have issues with such things (Affirmative Action - oy), but will not air them out here.

Though I do think that it'd be good for every "token" purchase made to be offset by a non-token purchase. So, for instance, if you're gonna buy _Slanted & Enchanted_, you have to buy a Nothing Painted Blue album. For every Tribe Called Quest joint, pick up Prince Paul or Gravediggaz. Each copy of _Kind of Blue_ must be matched with a copy of _Dancing in Your Head_ (which MIGHT be a bit jarring - perhaps Sun Ra would be a better choice). You get the idea, tho.

This could also be used to educate some listeners - for instance, slipping a copy of _Hex Enduction Hour_ in with the Pavement. That is, if they're curious about history and the roots of various things - some folks couldn't give two figs, and I can't blame them.

i'm a musicologist with little interest in indie rock that owns a copy of slanted & enchanted and i assure you, no bullshit is flung.

Dave: That's like the sixth different spelling of that name that I've seen in the past few weeks. Um Kulthuum? Om Khoulthoum? Radkjtl Kaoidjf?

Not to imply yours is wrong, or anything. Rounder is supposedly collecting some of that stuff for U.S. release, but they officially deny it.

everyone should have at least one queercore release.

Only slightly OT: I had a friend back in high school (previous century) who kept his record collection *segregated*. As in black and white. With a small section for integrated groups like, say, the English Beat. He said he di it to better reflect the realityof the world at large; he'd stop doing it when the world changed. Which was the kind of grand statement/joke we all used to make quite a lot then. back in high school (previous century).

does the queercore remix 12" count for anything? other than proving i'll buy anything for $2.

going by my collection, i think i have a proportional black/white mix going on, with the hispanic black/death metal population adequately represented. but i have a disproportionate amount of ethiopians...

your null fame, Friday, 17 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I have a disportiante number of japanese and Indians .

I'm always kind of worried about the dearth of female musicians in my collection, but I'm not sure what to do about it. It's strange, too, because my tastes could hardly be classified as "testosterone-fueled" or anything, but I don't have much music by women at all.

I have a disproportionate number of British instead of Amurricans. That's merely so that when the Colonies are returned to the Mother Country - ala Hong Kong - I'm not taken out behind the chemical sheds and shot.

That would mean more French pop tunes for moi. How much Mitsou, Celine Dion and Roch Voisine can one handle? Okay so it could mean more MC Solar (contental but whose keeping track) and Julie Doiron.
