The bootleg (live concert) called Unclean was also pretty good, at least back when I was listening to this stuff. It was my friend's copy and I never taped it, unfortunately. It has a completely different version of Godstar. "And all the drugs destroyed your mind!"

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 27 August 2003 21:22 (twenty years ago) link

Dreams Less Sweet is a good 'un. There's also the single, Roman P. And a host of other things from around the same time. Also Force The Hand of Chance.

I also remember a good live performance LP from a German live series, backed with a terrific metal percussion performance by Z'ev. That's worth getting, anyone remember what it was called?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 28 August 2003 01:13 (twenty years ago) link

Colin is OTM. You cannot go wrong with The Orchids and White Nights. I used to have a copy of this on cassette that I listened to quite a bit around 1996. I always have wanted to know what would happen if GPO just completely sold out and started to make pop records.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:42 (twenty years ago) link

He always had this ability to knock out a catchy melody and lyric didn't he? Maybe Godstar was his biggest attempt. I think there's a limit to the degree which a man like Gen P can sell out. He's too naturally strange to appeal to everyone.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 28 August 2003 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

Greatest Hits is a good starting point.

tigerclawskank, Friday, 29 August 2003 08:53 (twenty years ago) link

i like "godstar." i especially like that musically it undermines its ostensible purpose (i.e., a song that celebrates Brian Jones ends by stealing a Keith Richards guitar riff!)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 29 August 2003 08:57 (twenty years ago) link

colin is correct re genesis p orridge's strangeness being a limitation on how much he could "sell out." i mean, force the hand of chance and allegory and self (the one on which "godstar") appears are as close to pop as psychic tv got (and both albums demonstrated that genesis et al could write catchy pop when they felt like it), but there's too much strangeness on both to have too much widespread commercial appeal.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 29 August 2003 09:06 (twenty years ago) link

'Just Like Arcadia' is all I need.

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Friday, 29 August 2003 09:21 (twenty years ago) link

Dreams Less Sweet--New York Scum Haters--Those Who Do Not/Live In Reyjavik are my picks.

The record with PTV and Z'ev was "Berlin Atonal". Will it ever be re-released?

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Friday, 29 August 2003 16:34 (twenty years ago) link

Cheers Stephen! Berlin Atonal was a series of releases featuring various live performances I think. It had a great track on it, 'Skinhead Moonstomp'. The lyrics, if I recall them correctly, were:

Oi you!
Oi you skinhead!
Kick an 'ead kick an 'ead kick an 'ead skinhead!!!

Oi you!
Oi you skinhead!
Chicken head chicken head chicken head skinhead!!!

Which is of course pure genius.

PTV were really firing around this time. Anyone join their religious cult? They were into T-shirts as iconic religious fetish objects.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 29 August 2003 21:45 (twenty years ago) link

I corresponded with TOPY, but I didn't join. I always thought it was "kick it in skinhead." There's a version on Live in Rejkjavik (sp?) that's kind of funny and even a little funky. Also I like "Breakthrough" on that album, except that it quickly goes into a boringly noisey Velvetsesque jam.

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Friday, 29 August 2003 21:53 (twenty years ago) link

In "Godstar," the lines "Where were you when the stars went out?/Where were you when they started to shout?" remind me vaguely of Blake's "Tyger! Tyger!": "When the stars through down their spears/And watered heaven with their tears. . ." (quoting everything from memory, so don't expect 100% accuracy).

Oh no, I'm thinking about Psychic TV again.

Al Andalous (Al Andalous), Friday, 29 August 2003 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

Excuse me, but I believe it's "Kick it in, kick it in, skinhead skinhead skinhead." And the trailoff down an octave on the ultimate "skinhead" is utterly key

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 30 August 2003 00:26 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe then my post should be on one of the misheard lyrics threads.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 31 August 2003 07:21 (twenty years ago) link

three years pass...

I saw Psychic TV last night. I mainly just went out of admiration for Genesis P. because I'd said if h/she ever came here, no matter what the circumstances I'd have to go. Aside from one album (Towards The Infinite Beat) I've never been impressed with Psychic TV on a musical level, and the new album didn't do a whole lot to change that (well to be fair, I just found most of it far too depressing). So I expected to get bored after about three songs and go home. Instead they were absolutely fantastic, and even though I was dead tired after a time and new I had to go to work in the morning, I just could not bring myself to leave until I knew they had finished. Musically everything was right on as well. They even did a cover of Velvet Underground's Foggy Notion. S/he also did plenty of ranting about the Bush administration which I appreciated because *I'm* usually the one to go uncomfortably overboard with that. S/he said he wanted to stick a fist up their nether regions. I loved it.

Actually, I'm finding out that the most remarkable thing this year is not the Throbbing Gristle album or the Psychic TV album but this other album called Thee Majesty's "Vitruvian Pan" (good heavens, *three* albums this year for Gen! S/he is on a roll!)

Thee Majesty have a myspace page, but for some reason I'm unable to link to it here.

I wonder if Von Sudenfed will tour. In my opinion, that would just about make up for it if I was in your shoes and missed Psychic TV. The DJ actually played Von Sudenfed before the gig. It was great.

Bimble, Friday, 24 August 2007 03:36 (sixteen years ago) link

What would be the best way to sell a bunch of Psychic TV vinyl (including some pretty rare material)? I am afraid I will hardly get anything for it at a used record store, but I dread dealing with ebay and boxing it up and mailing it off and worrying about it getting damaged, or worrying that someone might claim it's been damaged when it hasn't, etc.

Also, any thoughts on whether this is this a good moment to be selling rare PTV vinyl? (Like, what do you think the market for it is like these days?)

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 25 August 2007 21:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I think that I would pay you good money for NY Scum Haters or Mouth Of The Night (or a few other things). I don't think the market is at quite the feverish level it was in the pre-filesharing days. Seriously, price it out at some reasonable level and post it here. Other people have done the same and it beats eBay.

sleeve, Saturday, 25 August 2007 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Ha, I don't have Mouth of the Night, but I remember seeing that used all over the place (of course, I mean around 15 years ago).

joost666, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 10:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Rockist: Ebay is your best bet. Describe it well, pack it in firm LP mailers (boxes are sometimes requested but usually are a waste of time/postage), and you should be fine. I've sold tons of stuff and only ever had one LP damaged in-transit (buyer claimed against postoffice).

Seriously, the 'returns' will be better there.

I too, will defend Genesis. Does anyone else here appreciate the song from the new Psychic TV album called "Lies And Then"? That is the only song I really particularly like off that album. It's a beautiful burst of pure alternating pop/punk vitriol, in my opinion.

That is an interesting article, joost. Thanks for posting it.

Does anyone know something about the ideology behind the thransgender esthetics of Genesis.

joost666, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 10:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Well I've always heard that the whole point is to surgically make Gen & Lady Jaye the same person. I haven't been able to find much "ideology" about it beyond that, but I'll dig out my magazine again from a couple of years ago and see if I can find anything I missed. I don't believe that Gen has taken hormones, which is why I believe people in-the-know might hesitate to directly call him/her transgendered. Although it's obvious that socially, s/he must bear the brunt of anything a transgendered person would.

All I can find on the Gen website is a paragraph or two on hermaphrodites, which is really another subject entirely than either transgendered people or whatever Gen is.

Bimble, Saturday, 1 September 2007 09:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, if you go to here and wait until part two of the video interview, s/he talks about the ideology in more depth.

"Dreams Less Sweet" was an important album to me when I was 16/17. I didn't know anything about them, I got a cassette copy of it from a friend, and it wasn't like any other music I listened to at the time. This was right when I had gotten my driver's license, and I liked to drive around country roads at night with that tape on, imagining some kind of pagan horrors in the cornfields.
