Amon Tobin....crud or cool

Been playing Supermodified non-stop for two weeks and just got Bricolage. This is about as commercial as my tastes get....so general thinking is Mr Tobin underground kewl or mainstream cafe muzak....your answers as always are appreciated....

Run to the record store. Buy _Permutation_. Bask in happiness and glory.

Tobin = super-mega-CLASSIC!

Dan Perry, Monday, 13 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yeah, I never understood why Bricolage seems to be the critical favorite... it's good but Permutation is so much better. Bricolage seems to be saying "Here's some jazz, now here's some jungle, etc" much of the time, while Permutation mixes things up much more effectively.

Anyway, classic, though Supermodified didn't really do much for me.

His textures = amazing. isn't he being used in some ad?

Jason, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Def. kewl. Wonder why he hasn't blown up yet, and anxiously await his next release.

md, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

he was in a coke ad with kids sitting on top of a building watching the sun rise. part of a series that also used basement jaxx's 'red alert'.

ethan, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

A vote for cool/classic from the Norwood jury.

Only vaguely aware of him before the Chris Morris collaboration and "Supermodified"; the latter is a blinding record, as dense as you like and hip-nudging throughout.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

v. cool, although susceptible to being used as webpage wallpaper muzak. however, being a fan of lo-content sound, I quite like these neverending pullquotes.

i like bricolage and permutatuona quite a lot, wondered why everyone kept on banging on about mediocre ninja label mates.

supermodified boring tho. like the last track. check 'me in my garden', and 'nightlife' ( ikinda guessed those titles'...)

I am reviving this because I am listening to _Permutation_ today and (surprisingly!) it still sounds fresh and fantastic. "Reanimator", "Sordid" and "Sultan Drops" in particular are untouchable.

I loved Permutation the most, then got some lovely new studio monitors with big sub, now I like Out From Out Where way more. I'm such a sucker for music that 'sounds' good through a good system.

Classic all the way, I couldn't give a shit if he sold his music for McDonalds/Gap Collaborative Edible Hats, I'd still love his work. Shame so many of my friends won't listen to him now he's on the TV or getting played in a club.

I saw Tobin dj once. A handful of earplugs in a special Amon Tobin package (with a drawing of his face on it!) were throw out to the audience, after which he proceeded to lay out what a casual listener would think was a solid wall of bass for about fifteen minutes. It was intense.

Tobin's stuff isn't as out there as it used to be since extreme! everything and electronic genres splitting and spreading cells like fast cancer but people calling his stuff commercial or mainstream shocks me because even with the BMW commerical I honestly think maybe 2 percent of the population has heard this guy's stuff. But if he really is mainstream and commercial, that means I've fully recovered from my youth and come full circle because Tobin is classic without a doubt.

I was at the debut 5.1 surround sound shows in Montreal this weekend, and it was probably the heaviest non-rock show I've ever witnessed. The material from the splinter cell soundtrack sounded particularly amazing, probably because it was properly mixed in 5.1 to begin with. I can't see his recent work getting much play in cafes and hair salons...

n.b. I'm totally implicated here, but my comments are sincere!

Reviving because Foley Room is decent but mostly just inspired me to dust off Bricolage and Permutation again and Permutation is still fucking monstrous.

Permutation and DJ Food's Kaleidescope sent me on a completely fruitless 2 year binge of buying Ninja Tune stuff trying to recapture the first high.

In retrospect, the only really essential Ninja Tune albums are Permutation, Cold Krush Kuts and the Animals on Wheels album; a lot of the rest of the catalogue has amazing moments that don't really sustain for the entire album.

Jaga Jazzist and Super Numeri albums also ace, not to mention the Solid Steel mixes (but especially the first). Foley Room was better than I expected, but it's definitely not close to his earlier stuff.

I'm researching music for a project I'm working on, and the person I'm working for is in love with Amon Tobin. I'm not as in love with them, and so I'm looking for other artists similar that I may like more. Complex, melodic, complicated, layered.

Third Eye Foundation is one that I feel might work, but I need a few more.

Any help would be appreciated.

As for Amon Tobin songs, assemblagist... mmm I'm assuming you're not a fan of his usually frenetic programming. Here's a POX of his songs which are more 'delicate' while keeping his particular style and remain layered enough:

Deo
Slowly
Mighty Micro People
Easy Muffin
Nova
Natureland
Nightlife

As Cujo:

Brazillianaire
Fat Ass Joint
Superstars of Rock

If you're looking for an even more safe sound you can try Boards of Canada or Bonobo's "Dial M for Monkey"... not precisely in the same league as Amon Tobin but people who enjoy him tend to enjoy those two.

Moka, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link

I actually meant Bonobo's debut 'animal magic'... but dial M is alright too.

Uhura Mazda (lukas), Wednesday, 5 December 2018 05:41 (five years ago) link

I wish he “returns to basics” on this one... he is a brilliant producer but it feels to me like he lost the ability to write a decent song, nothing he has released in the past 15 years has any replay value for me, it sounds gorgeous but it’s all style and no content, which ends up making every track overproduced.

It’s specially frustrating because he is clearly really, really good and towers above the rest of the ninjatune roster. His “sound design” is on a next level. Maybe producing (not remixing) for other artists in different genres would be a helpful reminder to keep things simple.

I mean his recent Two Fingers release was pretty simple and more catchy/dance oriented, comparatively. I feel I'm in the minority in that I feel he's done nothing but improve upon his sound and output over his entire career. I would love to hear something even more ambitious and abstract in terms of sound design, or perhaps meld the sounds of ISAN with some percussion and atmosphere of his earlier work. Either way, considering his last two albums were fairly sonically conceptual, I expect nothing less from this one.

octobeard, Wednesday, 5 December 2018 17:45 (five years ago) link

I agree. He's never going back to samples, c'mon.

At the time I felt like ISAM didn't have any hooks, but it's also amazing and ahead of its time. Feels prescient wrt some of the cinematic, sound design-heavy, high-impact music that's followed. Looking forward to a new one.

Listened to Permutation today and it sounded amazing. I totally respect all the directions he went post-sampling, but it's pretty incredible what he was able to with just a sampler and an old DAW. When people talk about the in awed tones about the sample collages on Endtroducing, that's how I feel about this one. Maybe there are fewer layers, but so many elements coming in and out. And more than anything it feels like a love letter to jazz drumming, the way he uses bebop solos as beats just speaks to my soul.

I checked out Supermodified and it didn't hit as hard as I remembered -- turns out that's because 4 Ton Mantis isn't on the streaming version (presumably because of that Apollo 100 sample?). That track really held the whole thing together.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Friday, 8 March 2024 20:14 (one month ago) link

i feel like the more downtempo tracks have help up better... Slowly, Chocolate Lovely, Natureland; I can still go and enjoy immensely without feeling like time has taken away anything from them.

4 Ton Mantis being memory-holed is a crime against art, yes, but c'mon, Get Your Snack On? Slowly??? great album. I remember the first time I put this album on, just being mystified by how it sounded like a dense thicket compared to the openness and clarity of Permutation. Top-tier sound design on all his stuff.

I haven't heard that song in ages. Was always a big fan of Frankland's main project Woob as well, which is still very active.

I like how a lot of the Ninja Tune aesthetic in those early years included a lot of field samples, discordant loops, and drum chaos over expansive beautiful ambient drones and/or cozy jazz loops. Unlike a lot of stuff released in that era they didn't seem to be out to relax the listener. Neotropic is also a favorite of that time.

so a local indie theater was showing a film from the 80s that i checkout, not knowing a lot about it; and it has this score - specifically this kind repeating of guitar riff that instantly jumped out at me as something I'd heard before. took me maybe 15 mins once i got home to figure out what it was - Cujo's Paris Streatham had used the soundtrack from Paris, Texas for the man riff. i'd sort of forgot about that Cujo album, but it still holds up pretty well despite it's age/simplicity.
