...because i only know the most obvious singles and would like to know more..

Wyndham Earl, Saturday, 19 July 2003 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

Me too!!!
This was my favorite band from like ages 2-6. I'm just started to get reaquainted with them. The most obvious singles do kick monster ass, but there MUST be more to them...

xnelio, Saturday, 19 July 2003 21:50 (twenty years ago) link

The original greatest hits, Rock and Soul Part 1, seriously (all right more than ten tracks but I don't care). That said, I didn't know many album cuts except from their early eighties existence -- but one that does deserve credit is this for-its-time fairly out there mostly-instrumental track called "Dance on Your Knees." If I remember right, Arthur Baker had something to do with it, it's the album opener (whatever the 1984 one was called...*checks AMG*...oh yeah! Big Bam Boom), builds up tension via tight funk/rock/electro to a great delivery of the title phrase and then this explosive release that sounds like a warplane strafing yer stereo. Then the beats downshift and it becomes "Out of Touch" and that's pleasant enough but I always preferred "Method of Modern Love" and "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" from that album.

said it before, say it again: "Intuition," from this year's album, is a GREAT song. A touch of two-step in the verses, a return to their old wannabe-Philly-soul roots on the chorus, it's all gravity.

I love how Xgau dissed them by saying "ten years on and I still don't know which one's the blonde." That was harsh.

And I can't say I liked any of their BIG 80'S HITS all that much, even back then. That makes me a funhater, but better a funhater than a maneater.

Neudonym, Sunday, 20 July 2003 00:56 (twenty years ago) link

(You have one more left mark s.)

She's Gone
Las Vegas Turnaround
Private Eyes
I Can't Go for That
Wait for Me
One On One
Sara Smile
Rich Girl
Kiss On My List
When the Morning Comes

(Probably too much GE Smith-era here.)

Andy K (Andy K), Sunday, 20 July 2003 00:58 (twenty years ago) link

Giddouddahere, K*llm*n. GE Smith soloing on the Big Bam Boom on this rising platform with the fog machine = genius. Besides, five years later the drummer was on the Cult's Sonic Temple and is part of the reason why the damn thing sounds so good cranked up. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 July 2003 01:12 (twenty years ago) link

She's Gone
Rich Girl
It's A Laugh
Wait For Me
How Does It Feel to be Back
Kiss on my List
Every Time You Go Away
I Hear the Voices (or whatever it's called, last track on _Voices_)
Dance on Your Knees/Out of Touch
Adult Education

Jeff Wright, Sunday, 20 July 2003 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

the ones I know on Andy's list would totally be on mine so that (replace one with "You Makeuh My Dreams Come True")

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 20 July 2003 02:33 (twenty years ago) link

it's odd/wrong considering how big they were and for how long how they've been reduced in the public conciousness to a moustache, beavis hair, and g.e. smith.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 20 July 2003 02:35 (twenty years ago) link

You Make My Dreams Come True is by far my favorite, but Rich Girl is very close.

Fuck it, who am I kidding, they're all great. God he has a good voice.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 20 July 2003 02:50 (twenty years ago) link

looking at that list of credits I am very very very curious about this album

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 20 July 2003 02:52 (twenty years ago) link

Not only have I heard it, I used to own it and almost bought it again for a dollar last week. What I remember is this: more rambling and casual song structures, less slick vocalizing and production, and weird song with loud Fripp riff, vocal tape loops and yelling called (I think) NYCNY.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 21 July 2003 01:58 (twenty years ago) link

"Earth magic indeed."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 21 July 2003 03:42 (twenty years ago) link

brian eno! robert fripp!! on a darryl hall album? WTF?

and then this snippet from the AMG review ... "Most bonkers of all is "Babs and Babs," a straight-ahead Daryl Hall track until a Fripp soundscape kicks in from nowhere! Fripp's own "Urban Landscape" shows him having withdrawal symptoms from Bowie's infamous Heroes sessions."

sean, you must buy this thing and record it and send it to us post haste!

Mark S--I was fucking raised on Abandoned Luncheonette. double yes to "Las Vegas Turnaround," as well as "She's Gone"--the whole first side, actually.

Ned's first post on this thread is so OTM! God I wish Ned would exercise his wonderful critical mind on ILM and slightly temper silly one-liners.

Anyway, here's mine:

You Make My Dreams
Kiss On My List
I Can't Go For That
Private Eyes
One on One
She's Gone
Rich Girl
Man Eater
Adult Education
Method of Modern Love

Man, "You Make My Dreams" was one of the first songs I ever fell in love with. I still LOVE THAT CODA - "I'm down on my daaaaaay-dream, but that sleepwalk should be over by now, YOU KNOW!" It still gives me chills when I hear it.

I love the way "Kiss on My List" kicks in with that rolling piano line; nice stuff, good arrangement.

These guys were totally fantastic, anyone who disses them is plain wrong.

Diamond's list, except with "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" added

Aw man. But I like them! If (as I hope) my energy level from random talk about music is returning then you'll see more of it.

Non-obvious X:

"I Don't Want To Lose You" [Rundgren prod.]
"Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" [Arthur Baker prod.]
"Crime Pays" [pre Electro-clash]
"Looking For A Good Sign" [H&O soul]
"When The Morning Comes" [Arif Mardin prod.]
"Wait For Me" [Disco!]
"I Hear The Voices" [Rumor has it "Voices" was inspired by Son Of Sam]
"Everytime You Go Away" [The Original]
"Possession Obsession" [album version sans Sax-o-phone]

and I have to say:

"One on One" [12" Version]

my favorite end-of-set DJ jam.

"I Can't Go For That" is one of the great basslines of all time, and I like the lyric, too. What is she asking him to do? What line did she cross exactly? I shudder to think.

Other good ones: "Family Man," what with the infidelity and all. "Adult Education" is dripping with sticky underage sex -- I remember being vaguely aware of that fact even as a kid. It's kinda edgy stuff, really.

Not the world's greatest artists, but they did a solid job every time. B+.

I've been playing the last three songs from "Bigger Than Both of Us" over and over. That's the album that has Rich Girl, which is just fine, but it turns into like hard rock Steely Dan or something right near the end. Can't find a video for my favorite song, but Spotify has it:

The song before that, "Room To Breath" is on youtube in this pretty amazing live version, along with a great War Babies track:

This period of their career defines "uneven" but there's stuff like this.

I'm a huge H&O fan, but is it odd my all-time favourite song of theirs is "Out of Touch?"

heiswagger (rennavate), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah Abandoned Luncheonette only has like 3 songs I need. Listening to the self-titled (with glammo cover photo) right now though and it's pretty solid. I rly should venture out of the safety zone of their perfect self-produced phase.

xpost 'Out of Touch' is awesome! Love the gravity of the chords under the chorus.

xposting a bit. So the album that H&O hated wasn't "Bigger Than Both of Us." It was "Beauty on a Back Street." They're wrong about that as well. There are a bunch of tracks from it that are great, but this is the one that's just killing me lately. Comparisons? God, it's a 6 minute long mix of hard 70's rock and maybe Sparks on the chorus, and then this freaked out "I'm the doctor! I'm the doctor!" chant at the end. I've gone through back catalogs of an awful lot of 80s/90s bands, and can't think of one that has more interesting stuff lurking than H&O.
