Yeah, he's great! I just picked up his '79 Outline LP -- same beat-driven Euro-rigidness as Moroder, a bit more funky and celebratory, less remote. Soulful-yet-anonymous female vox.

Great album cover, too; reminds me of Tangerine Dream or that one poster I used to see all the time in the early '80s that was a detailed illustrated map POV of the NYC street grids splaying out into increasingly less-detailed maps of locales in the larger world.

The great push-pull of the disco era: the singer-player's surrender-of-self to the auteur-visionary's totalitarian regime vs. the tools those singer-players were given to work with ("soul" as agreed-upon style choice rather than individualized catharsis). I like Destiny's Child for the same reasons. The gospeloid melismania is a red herring; their best asset is their ability to function as robots.

(Oh, and yes, Cerrone roxx ur all gay.)

I only have 'DANCER' - love the music and effects, and much prefer the muted vocals in the 2nd half to the diva disco moments... but I've been hearing his stuff more and more recently, and have mixed feeling about so much... I'd like to hear it some more

I tend to prefer diva-soul when it's at its most disciplined and classicist (in full command of the vocal, not sloppy and unruly). I agree with you about the end of "Dancer" -- the whooping and hollering seems out of step with the rest of the track. At least if, say, Beyonce were doing it, it would feel more controlled. She's a diva, yes, but also a professional who knows how to give a song exactly what it needs.

Never heard "Outline" but "Closer" (1980) and "Face to face" (1983) are two excellent LPs. But I wouldn't say he's so moroderian apart from "Dancer". He sounds much lighter and party-friendly doesn't he?

*Outline* is one of the great Eurodisco albums of all time (and "Running in Circles" is one of music's all time great statements about repetition for its own sake, right up there Eurodisco-wise with "Here Comes That Sound Again" by Love Deluxe), and *S0-Beat* (from 1980, with "Tequila" guitar parts!) is almost as good.

five months pass...

I played the "Dancer" b-side, "So Lonely" at a thing the other night. Found the 12" for 50 scrint at the local gettin' place. It really worked as a moody little transitional thing. Very sweet. Need to go track down the actual lps.
