Given the strong following it seems they have here, I am actually a bit surprised nobody has done this before. Anyway, here is my list - a very "Rio" dominated one:

1. The Chauffeur
2. Planet Earth
3. Lonely In Your Nightmare
4. New Moon On Monday
5. New Religion
6. Hungry Like The Wolf
7. Hold Back The Rain
8. My Own Way
9. Last Chance On The Stairway
10.Girls On Film

i can only do POO here:
Save a Prayer

[although the lipsynch-performance of "Wild Boys" i once gave with a couple of friends in school (age: 12) is a close runner-up... (i was Nick Rhodes)]

willem (willem), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

ok.

1. The Chauffeur (natch..)
2. The Reflex (single version)
3. Ordinary World (how to write a cool power ballad - do it Duran style)
4. Girls On Film
5. Make Me Smile (Come up and see me)- Live on Reflex 12"
6. Skin Trade (DD do Prince and get away with it)
7. New Religion
8. Planet Earth
9. Is There Something I Should Know (underrated I think)
10. Rio

darren (darren), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 10:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

The song "Rio" is from the depths of Hell and should be stamped from our general consciousness. That is all.

(Also, any list that doesn't include "I Don't Want Your Love" and "Notorious" is wrong.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 11:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

The song "Rio" is from the depths of Hell and should be stamped from our general consciousness. That is all.

Not necessarily (although it is probably my least favourite track on an album that contains exclusively good ones).

(Also, any list that doesn't include "I Don't Want Your Love" and "Notorious" is wrong.)

I second that though (and I'd like to add the godawful "Skin Trade" and "All She Wants Is" too....)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 11:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haha Geir I said doesn't.

I will admit that my "Rio" hate stems from being forcibly exposed to that song multiple times at EVERY SINGLE PARTY I WENT TO in college (seriously, it was ridiculous: go to a regular dorm party, someone would play "Rio"; go to a party sponsored by a campus group, the DJ would play "Rio"; go to a university-sponsored party, the DJ would play "Rio"; between that and "Stop" by Erasure and fucking "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor I wanted to murder people).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 11:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Am I the only person who loves "Cracks In The Pavement"? Used to have the Wild Boys single with that on the flip, and I played the B much more than the A.

Rio is crap.

1. "The Chauffeur"
2. "Hungry Like the Wolf"
3. "Planet Earth"
4. "Girls on Film"
5. "New Religion"
6. "Union of the Snake"
7. "Save a Prayer"
8. "Last Chance on the Stairway"
9. "White Lines" - Yes, I actually like it!
10. "Come Undone".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Come Undone" is such a fantastic song, it hurts. Seriously, I get all emotional just thinking about that soaring chorus.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just 10? Ok...

1. "Friends of Mine"
2. "Last Chance on the Stairway"
3. "The Seventh Stranger"
4. "Winter Marches On"
5. "Do You Believe in Shame?"
6. "Serious"
7. "Ordinary World"
8. "Watching the Detectives" (I think it's as good as the original)
9. "So Long Suicide"
10. "Playing with Uranium"

Plus another 10 since I've been a huge fan of theirs for a LONG time:

1. "Sound of Thunder"
2. "The Chauffeur"
3. "Union of the Snake"
4. "Hold Me"
5. "Palomino"
6. "My Antarctica"
7. "Sin of the City"
8. "Big Bang Generation"
9. "Buried in the Sand"
10. "Kiss Goodbye"/"Last Day on Earth" (this is a case where two songs are practically one song -- neither can go without the other)

Plus my top ten b-sides (real b-sides too):

1. "Late Bar"
2. "To the Shore"
3. "Faster than Light"
4. "Faith in this Colour"
5. "Secret Oktober"
6. "We Need You"
7. "I Believe/All I Need to Know"
8. "Falling Angel" (or "Fallen Angel")
9. "Time for Temptation"
10. "Sinner or Saint"

Just a few "I just couldn't leave it at ten songs" lists from someone who's been a huge fan of this band for half her life.

The song "Rio" is from the depths of Hell and should be stamped from our general consciousness.

"Rio" roxx and u r gay. Dan, picture this in yr head: Ramon worked for Greenpeace, aka the annoying wankers who stand on the street corner harassing people to see if they have a minute for Greenpeace. The speech is to say your name, tell them about the rainforest, beg them for a credit card number to charge them inordinant amounts of money. So I decided to help him practice this one day, show him how to be personable, like (since everyone who met him knows that "personable" wasn't in his repertoire). So I stop a guy who apparently does have a minute for Greenpeace, the poor lifeless bastard. With all the seriousness of someone trying to save the earth from capitalist factory fucks, I look the sap in the eyes and state, "Hello, my name is Rio, and I dance upon the sand." Needless to say he was infuriated.

Now tell me that "Rio" is worthless. I dare you.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh and I actually enjoy their cover of "White Lines" too. Lists that don't have "A View To A Kill" and "Planet Earth" on them are bullshit, though.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lists that don't have "A View To A Kill" and "Planet Earth" on them are bullshit, though.

Why is that, hmm?

Honestly, I adore "Planet Earth", but I wanted to name songs that weren't released as singles. Some of the songs on my list are singles songs (c.f. "Union of the Snake" & "Ordinary World", e.g.), but I didn't want to name really hugely popular songs because it would've resulted in me naming practically every song on their catalogue.

Personally, I feel lukewarm toward "A View to a Kill", though. I do think it's a fairly good song for a Bond theme, but I like "Live & Let Die" just as much. I also feel lukewarm toward "Wild Boys", but I do remember when I felt deeply excited over that song way back when I was 12 - 13 and hearing it for the very first time.

I'm a huge fan, though. I have every one of Duran Duran's albums in at least two formats, if not three. I've got numerous paraphernalia, including t-shirts, decals, and books. I can tell you sad-sack information on each band member. I know that the so-called "fab five" are NOT the "original" band lineup and I can name to you who exactly made up the real "original" band lineup. I guess this would be the time when I would say, "So there," but I won't. *grin*

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Wild Boys has the best video but the song really isn't that good. The video is beyond anything I've ever seen though.

It was really just a glib statement in response to Dan's post, really, I mean it'd be impossible to make a "bullshit" Duran Duran list. I have no problem listing almost entirely singles because they've got such phenomenol singles that it's impossible to ignore them.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ally, that is far and away the best argument for the song "Rio" ever.

My original glib statement was largely because I didn't have time to sit down and make a list, but I knew "I Don't Want Your Love" and "Notorious" would be on it. (So would "Come Undone", hence the ultra-sappy post.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

He called me a bitch, the man with time for Greenpeace. I was like, you have a minute for Greenpeace but not for Simon Le Bon? What type of person are you?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Lists that don't have "A View To A Kill" and "Planet Earth" on them are bullshit, though.

Yes yes yes, "A View to a Kill" is criminally underrated.

Meeting you with a view to a kill
Face to faces, secret places, feel the chill
Night fall covers me
But you know the plans I'm making
Still overseas,
Could it be the whole lot opening wide
A sacred why
A mystery gaping inside
A week is why

Until we dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire
To fatal sounds of broken dreams
Dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire

The choice for you is the view to a kill
Between the shades assasination standing still

First crystal tears,
Fallen of snowflakes on your body
First time in years
To drench you skin of lover's rosy stain
A chance to find the phoenix for the flame
A chance to die

But can we dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire
To fatal sounds of broken dreams
Dance into the fire
That fatal kiss is all we need
Dance into the fire

When all we see is the view to a kill

My knowledge of Duran Duran extends from living with my sister, 18 months my junior. She was a rabid DD fan back in the early 80's and subjected me to every album and video to the point where I couldn't tolerate them any more. Eventually her obsession migrated to The Cure ... I appreciated the transition and now that I'm distanced from extreme sibling fandom can properly appreciate DD.

1. Careless Memories
2. Save a Prayer (perfect prom theme parody)
3. New Moon on Monday
4. Ordinary World
5. Is There Something I Should Know
6. Planet Earth
7. New Religion
8. Make Me Smile (it was decades before I found out it's a cover)
9. Come Undone
10. Anyone Out There

two years pass...
Reviving this, having just bought Greatest (DVD as it was cheaper than the CD, wtf?), a purchase inspired by seeing the Duran boys play on Sunday.

I was struck by 'Serious', which I hadn't heard/noticed before, and by how much I like 'Notorious' and 'Skin Trade'. More than anything, I find myself having to reappraise 'A View To A Kill', not heretofore one of my favourite Duran Duran tracks. The intro is absolute genius. Something about those massive orchestra hits *really* presses my buttons.

So...

1. View To A Kill
2. The Chauffeur
3. Planet Earth
4. Notorious
5. I Don't Want Your Love
6. Careless Memories
7. Come Undone
8. Save A Prayer
9. Last Chance on the Stairway
10. Electric Barbarella

And so many more I had to leave out :( But really, it's all about View to a Kill at this moment in time.

3. "The Seventh Stranger"
4. "Winter Marches On"
5. "Do You Believe in Shame?"

9. "So Long Suicide"
10. "Playing with Uranium"
-- Dee the Lurker (admi...), April 9th, 2003.

i love "electric barbarella" and "out of my mind" but is it worth getting "medazzaland" and should i get the japanese import to get "ball and chain"?

retrogurl, Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't have the Japanese import so I can't comment on 'Ball and Chain' - you'll have to wait for Dee to surface - but I have Medazzaland, and it is... interesting. It's quite an experimental album, which makes it a much more stimulating listen than Astronaut, for e.g. But there's nothing else on it as stonking as 'Electric Barbarella'. Apparently they purposely set out to write a song that harked back to the first 2 albums and 'Electric Barbarella' was the result. So no wonder I like it.

Zora (Zora), Thursday, 22 December 2005 12:54 (eighteen years ago) link

BTW, 'Serious' didn't make it onto my top 10 in the end, b/c I don't trust my motives. I think it's a great song, but I have yet to experience it w/o the video. It's a beautiful video, and Nick looks so devastating in it that I'll have to reserve judgement until I've gotten 'Liberty' and learned to separate the track from the visuals. Tchah.

I still feel like my list up there is just about right, but I am really getting a thing for "(I'm Looking For) Cracks In The Pavement" too. The "Seven And The Ragged Tiger" album is actually a bit underrated.

eight years pass...

It's probably sacrilege, but the album cuts on Big Thing are some of my favorite DD things these days. Take out Drug, and from Too Late Marlene to Lake Shore Driving is fantastic. Give me the first LP + b-sides, Arcadia, Notorious, Big Thing and i'm set.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 1 May 2017 18:52 (six years ago) link

Big Thing was my fave DD album for a long time, I'd only rank it second nowadays to All You Need Is Now... I wrote this as well in that recent thread on 'least acclaimed albums you like'.
Drug is the only track on the album I don't exactly love, but I don't hate it either.
I saw them in 2008, they played an 'electroset' which included All She Wants Is and I Don't Want Your Love, I thought it worked really well.

Alfred, although I'd personally rank many album tracks, many songs from later albums and certainly Secret Oktober above lots of songs from your list I can't argue with the fact that those 30 tracks are all pretty great indeed. But I can't make heads or tails of that article. Interpol being fun or not relating to Duran Duran... how? Bass lines being a giveway for the singer's demeanour, huh?? US president eras as British artist timeline markers - erm...?
