I will admit that my "Rio" hate stems from being forcibly exposed to that song multiple times at EVERY SINGLE PARTY I WENT TO in college (seriously, it was ridiculous: go to a regular dorm party, someone would play "Rio"; go to a party sponsored by a campus group, the DJ would play "Rio"; go to a university-sponsored party, the DJ would play "Rio"; between that and "Stop" by Erasure and fucking "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor I wanted to murder people).

Rio is crap.

Just a few "I just couldn't leave it at ten songs" lists from someone who's been a huge fan of this band for half her life.

Dan, picture this in yr head: Ramon worked for Greenpeace, aka the annoying wankers who stand on the street corner harassing people to see if they have a minute for Greenpeace. The speech is to say your name, tell them about the rainforest, beg them for a credit card number to charge them inordinant amounts of money. So I decided to help him practice this one day, show him how to be personable, like (since everyone who met him knows that "personable" wasn't in his repertoire). So I stop a guy who apparently does have a minute for Greenpeace, the poor lifeless bastard. With all the seriousness of someone trying to save the earth from capitalist factory fucks, I look the sap in the eyes and state, "Hello, my name is Rio, and I dance upon the sand." Needless to say he was infuriated.

Now tell me that "Rio" is worthless. I dare you.

Why is that, hmm?

Honestly, I adore "Planet Earth", but I wanted to name songs that weren't released as singles. Some of the songs on my list are singles songs (c.f. "Union of the Snake" & "Ordinary World", e.g.), but I didn't want to name really hugely popular songs because it would've resulted in me naming practically every song on their catalogue.

Personally, I feel lukewarm toward "A View to a Kill", though. I do think it's a fairly good song for a Bond theme, but I like "Live & Let Die" just as much. I also feel lukewarm toward "Wild Boys", but I do remember when I felt deeply excited over that song way back when I was 12 - 13 and hearing it for the very first time.

I'm a huge fan, though. I have every one of Duran Duran's albums in at least two formats, if not three. I've got numerous paraphernalia, including t-shirts, decals, and books. I can tell you sad-sack information on each band member. I know that the so-called "fab five" are NOT the "original" band lineup and I can name to you who exactly made up the real "original" band lineup. I guess this would be the time when I would say, "So there," but I won't. *grin*

It was really just a glib statement in response to Dan's post, really, I mean it'd be impossible to make a "bullshit" Duran Duran list. I have no problem listing almost entirely singles because they've got such phenomenol singles that it's impossible to ignore them.

My original glib statement was largely because I didn't have time to sit down and make a list, but I knew "I Don't Want Your Love" and "Notorious" would be on it. (So would "Come Undone", hence the ultra-sappy post.)

I was struck by 'Serious', which I hadn't heard/noticed before, and by how much I like 'Notorious' and 'Skin Trade'. More than anything, I find myself having to reappraise 'A View To A Kill', not heretofore one of my favourite Duran Duran tracks. The intro is absolute genius. Something about those massive orchestra hits *really* presses my buttons.

I still feel like my list up there is just about right, but I am really getting a thing for "(I'm Looking For) Cracks In The Pavement" too. The "Seven And The Ragged Tiger" album is actually a bit underrated.

It's probably sacrilege, but the album cuts on Big Thing are some of my favorite DD things these days. Take out Drug, and from Too Late Marlene to Lake Shore Driving is fantastic. Give me the first LP + b-sides, Arcadia, Notorious, Big Thing and i'm set.

Big Thing was my fave DD album for a long time, I'd only rank it second nowadays to All You Need Is Now... I wrote this as well in that recent thread on 'least acclaimed albums you like'.
Drug is the only track on the album I don't exactly love, but I don't hate it either.
I saw them in 2008, they played an 'electroset' which included All She Wants Is and I Don't Want Your Love, I thought it worked really well.

Alfred, although I'd personally rank many album tracks, many songs from later albums and certainly Secret Oktober above lots of songs from your list I can't argue with the fact that those 30 tracks are all pretty great indeed. But I can't make heads or tails of that article. Interpol being fun or not relating to Duran Duran... how? Bass lines being a giveway for the singer's demeanour, huh?? US president eras as British artist timeline markers - erm...?

I’ll pick “Come Undone” as my POO. It’s one of those “decade defining” songs in my life, despite not being a fan of the band.

Kinda surprised I never did this before. I do recall defending 7&tRT elsewhere, at least.
