Go on then, not many "Official" releases but enough to keep us going.

I'll get the obvious out the way and say "ROYGBIV".

...hang on, i've heard it too often and i'm a bit bored of it. maybe i'll go with 1969.

damn you matt dc, you posted as i wrote.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Isotope - or whatever that track at the end of the 'Beautiful place' EP is called - sounds like Philip Glass writing music to be played on melting icicles, far superior to anything else they've ever done in my opinion, simply for not being 'the same old' formula which they like to recycle over and over. Nothing against the two albums, but this is the only time they seriously get different and it's beguilingly beautiful.

(also helps that it was the first BoC track I heard and nothing has compared to the thrill and surprise of it)

Rob M (Rob M), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

I second ROYGBIV. The only one I can remember as an individual track, to my shame.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ah! Zoetrope! Largely overlooked because of the quality of all the other stuff on that EP. It makes me think of a couple dancing together round and round and round.

zemko (bob), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is hard. My stock answer is (and probably always will be) "Turquoise Hexagon Sun", but compelling arguments can be made for "Zoeotrope" and "Happy Cycling".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

my other candidates were 'Orange Romeda', 'Roygbiv, 'Kid For Today', 'Music Is Math', 'Nlogax', that track from ATP 2001 i cant identify and a couple of others i can't identify from the Disengage mix. i always hated 'Aquarius' even tho i know its brilliant and probably their definitive track...but it unsettles me so

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

it's Pick Only One stevem! - silly lad ;-)

I think we need a new category called "Gun to the Head" where you have to say your fave/worst as if you had a gun pointed at your head and had to answer as concisely as poss with as little procrastanation. This would help "Best of" lists no-end I reckon.

dog latin, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

B-b-but "Aquarius" is NOTHING compared to "THS"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

still a nice guitar sound though he really shouldn't write the lyrics on his own. barney is almost a philosopher in comparison.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 5 February 2003 04:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

In "an eagle in your mind" a creepy voice says "i love you" once and "the color of the fire" has the 1970's Sesame Street sample of the little girl saying "i love you" over and over again. Which one?

Tough one here, but ill go with "sixtyten" because of the moldy, hazy, dying synth solo tacked to the end.

Polo Pony, Wednesday, 5 February 2003 04:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

first i heard was 'Pete Standing Alone' and i bought everything on the basis of that (turned out the rest of it sounded a lot less like autechre than PSL did but nice enough anyway). so that would be my one.

the counting on Aquarius gets me every time.

never understood why they left that 4th peel session track 'XYZ' off the cd.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 24 October 2005 09:04 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm unsure as to whether the copy of Campfire Headphase I downloaded is correct (can't afford proper copy yet but I will get it on pay day). I like the second track's twisty bassline and the echoey first track but the rest sounds a bit too much like what Autechre were doing circa 1997... odd!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 24 October 2005 10:01 (eighteen years ago) link

1997? (Quickly consults discogs...) Chiastic Slide? Crazy talk! What are your track lengths? One should be 0.44, two should be 5.47. I can't comment on twisty basslines as my ipod is suddenly refusing to actually play any of the tracks.

Yeah I would have to go with "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country". "Aquarius" has strong nostalgia pull (and how meta it is to feel nostalgia for a BoC track) but IABPOITC has the slight edge of disquiet I loved so much about the Geogaddi era. Still my favourite of their albums.

yeah i bought this when it came out just because it was $5 new. hadn't really connected with MHTRTC but after the first ten seconds of "kid for today" and i was like "ohhhh i get these guys now.. awesome *gets all blissed out*".

flappy bird, Monday, 21 November 2016 18:03 (seven years ago) link

Olson is sort of packaged with Pete Standing Alone.. it's a great part of MHTRTC. An Eagle in Your Mind is high on my list, too.. it just has that subtle, loaded quality.

Oh goddamnit, how could I forgot their utterly brilliant remix of cLOUDDEAD's Dead Dogs Two?

It's just a remix, but it's so much more than that - it vastly improves upon the original song, has wholly unique bits and that classic A Day In the Life ending.

Also their remixes of Poppyseed are also POO worthy. Ugh... these guys are too good.

octobeard, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 04:24 (seven years ago) link

Remix of Beck's "Broken Drum" is fantastic too.

massaman gai, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 11:44 (seven years ago) link

xp Music Is Math is so great.

My top ten:

1. In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country
2. Music Is Math
3. Aquarius
4. ROYGBIV
5. 1969
6. '84 Pontiac Dream
7. Olsen
8. Happy Cycling
9. Zoetrope
10. Telepath

Very heavily weighted to their first two albums but that's cos I just didn't enjoy the Campfire Headphase and while I really like Tomorrow's Harvest, I can't really think of specific tracks that stand out.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link

Nothing is Real is my favorite off of Tomorrow's Harvest.

everyone has heard their remix of Poppy Seed, yeah?

There's two - and honestly the reprise is my fav of the two.

But the best BoC remix by FAR in my book is their remix of Dead Dogs Two. Am I weird thinking these guys have a thing for Oakland? Their remixes of cLOUDDEAD (Dead Dogs Two being a particularly poignant homage to Oakland in its own way) and Odd Nosdam tracks and the cover of Tomorrow's Harvest snapping SF from the vantage point of Alameda... maybe just coincidence.

octobeard, Tuesday, 21 June 2022 06:19 (one year ago) link
