Live365 (and other Internet radio)

Does anyone else here use Live365 regularly (or any other internet radio)? What do you think of it? Has anyone else been listening to the rather fine Tangents radio? Or WFNK? Is internet radio going to usurp traditional radio? {Insert your own internet radio related question here}?

I've used Live365 in the past, but I've found it difficult to navigate and it has caused crashes. I haven't been there lately, so maybe it has improved. I often use Nibblebox which has a broad sampling of American college radio. As far as internet radio usurping traditional radio, certainly that will happen for folks like me who work in cubicles. At home, I never use it, but I live in a big city with plenty of college radio.

If online radio hadn't become too cumbersome for my ancient PC and 28K modem to handle, and was generally easier to use, I'd be listening to it all the time. I used to listen to Imagine Radio, where you could program your own playlist - not individual songs, but you could decide what artists would get played and how frequently. That was SO cool.

You use a 28k modem? Really?

Yup.

WRCT Pittsburgh Pretty decent! It plays music ranging from Techno to Extreme Grindcore Metal! Listening to this got me into Magnetic Fields! I heard "The Desperate Things You Made Me Do" and HAD to phone up to find out. All the way from England.

I hope I don't come across as snippy, I certainly don't intend that, but that schedule looks pretty typical for an American college radio station. Some are more adventurous than others. I have no idea what radio is like outside of the US or Canada, so I don't know if there are equivalents to that. Many college stations have webcasts and new ones are being added every day.

On a related note, my beloved Nibblebox was just bought out by some big media company last week. You can still find them at:

http://www.hypnotic.com/hypnotic.asp?content=/nibblebox_redirect.asp

but there's no direct link to the college stations and the page really looks like shit now. God knows how long this service will be available, but I really, really enjoyed surfing the college stations.

I particularly like KVCU (University of Colorado-Boulder) and I have to plug my alma mater, WNUR (wnur.org). There's also probably some really weird-ass college radio out there, especially late at night (morning to you UK folk), but I dunno how many of those people are online yet. Many of these stations have their own web pages and you can access the webcast directly.

When I was employed and had access to a high speed connection, I listened to internet radio all the time. Radio Good http://www.radiogood.com was my favorite. I had some trouble with them the last time I tried to listen, but that may have been my connection.

Luckily I am in range of WRAS 88.5 Atlanta, so I don't feel deprived of great radio.

I would like to see internet radio stick around, though. It's a great idea. Part of what I like about it is that anybody can make a station (ahem, like we did: http://www.peopletalktooloud.com) but I fear that if it shows any sign of being popular or commercially viable it will be snatched up and regulated somehow.

Apologies to anyone I've banged on about this to before, but I really love http://www.indiepopradio - it was the first place I heard bands like the Aislers Set and the Essex Green. I know that's not every ILMer's cup of tea, but it's mine, so.

That's probably the best thing about net radio, isn't it? A lot of it's done by amateurs so they can afford to play just what they like, maybe be a bit more obsucre and catch listeners who are willing to give different stuff a try. Another great thing about indiepopradio is you don't get an annoying DJ in between records.

http://www.kcrw.com can be quite good too - they have quite a lot of good live sessions which are all in a convenient list to download if you missed them. The Magnetic Fields one is brilliant.

I've never had problems with listening to internet radio, but then I work for a telecom company so my net access is supafast. Ner.

Am I the only one who listens to internet radio who *loves* DJs? As long as it's someone articulate and informed, I love it, and if it's someone with an amazing voice, all the better. I used to listen to luxuriamusic.com before it went under, and what I loved about it was that the DJs had great voices and talked a bit between songs. Reminded me of the stations my grandfather used to listen to. Some college and pirate radio is like that, and I like knowing that my music isn't programmed by a robot.
