Metro Area (and if you want also Morgan Geist) (and now Storm Queen)

So on the strength of a few end of year lists (I always fall for those fuckers), I bought the Metro Area album today, and just finished listening to it.

Now Morgan Geist may be a genius in my book, but what exactly is the big deal about Metro Area? How did it even get into the year end lists?

Its unoffensive, expertly produced chic-dance floor music for people who don't want to sweat. Why does this make people rate it so highly?

Nik (Nik), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh, and Morgan Geist's "Driving Memoirs" > semi-classic
his stuff as HydroElectric or whatever for Aquarhythms > classic
his remix of DubTribe Soundsystem > classic
his work on Erlend Oye's "Ghost Trains" > classic....

Nik (Nik), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I understand both the hatred and the praise. I think the key phrase was expertly produced chic dance floor music. it's far and away the most sleek / style bar background music type of record I own and as a sore thumb in a sea of dirty grimy harder edged music it works just fine.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

because the lead tracks on the eps were really great, everyone felt they should cream themselves over the album. me, i just cream myself over the lead tracks on the eps (not volume 1 though). a dj's dream.

tell me more about the eps

Nik (Nik), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 02:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

the lp basically combines the 3(?) 12"s I think. maybe some tracks added or missed but roughly that.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 02:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think it is 4 eps. I knew about Metro Area well before the album release and I still could never get my hands on an EP so the success of this album has really been years in the making.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

It has 'Miuri' on it. Simple as that.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 10:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

right now it's difficult to find an album that doesn't have 'miura' on it.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I tried really, really hard to sell it back at Amoeba tonight, but failed. After only about 2-3 weeks it would be on my list of "albums I've owned for the shortest amount of time"...and I also just picked it up after reading so much about it, without hearing anything beforehand.

I'd rather to that stupid Iio song.

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Caught Up, Miura, and Pina are all pretty good I think. I think the point is how sparse it is. Personally I listen to mainsteam house music most of the time but what I loved about Metro Area was that although it's less frenetic it's not necessarily less pop. I can't think of alot of other deep house that actually makes me want to dance, could be listening to bad deep house shows but either way.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the problem is that Metro Area's shelf life has already started to come to an end. I think sometimes we forget that dance music is not necessarily about the music, but the idea that surrounds the music. Also, although the tracks are great music on their own, they are still mix tools.

I think if the album had dropped 18 months ago your impression would be very different, especially if you are/were a dance music obsessive. When those 12"s dropped they were something very special. They were "12 inch of the year" caliber releases when they were new.
Perhaps a bit of the sheen has faded over the last few months, especially after all the press they did.

When those records hit the streets they were the shit, still haven’t bothered to buy the album. Not sure I will, either.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who's this "we".

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 8 January 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

I bought it... mostly based on the praise heaped upon it here. Somewhat disapointed. somewhat not. its the most stripped back dsico I have ever heard but is also such a DJ album. and has that pastiche of this loop / seciton / stab, stop now wait ...ok ok ok wait for it.. change that one note. wait ....

each track also sounds a bit like they have taken 2 or 3 half finished things and slapped them together.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Thursday, 9 January 2003 05:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, "Miura" is definitely the one. And worth it for the dancefloor effect....

I'd much rather dance albums that are just a collection of club aimed / based releases, instead of huge sprawling ideas albums that meander through dancefloor styles....

...but even so, guess I missed the initial Metro Area hype, yet can't help feeling that if these tracks were presented in a series back then, I would have been scratching my head at some point about the point...

But "Muira" and 1 other track are down right essential. And Morgan Geist rules.

Nik (Nik), Sunday, 12 January 2003 02:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

I agree yeah that the less styles they attempt to cover the better. This thing of guest vocalists and a quiet track and a loud track is just annoying.

So now it's been more than three years since the last post. What are you folks feeling about this now? I listened to it straight through this morning, and I was completely and totally satisfied. Still a great, great album in my book. It is definitely "stripped back disco" as mentioned above but it is great for this. A soothing dance album.

Unclassics?

I couldn't help but feel that these tracks, with very few exceptions, were UN-classics for a reason. They're, uh ... boring. I'm not being lazy, I just think that's the truth. I mean, anybody can walk into a record store, look for unknown records on West End, Emergency, Profile, Unidisc, TSR, or whatever ... is it really that great? I don't think so.

Although, it does predate Lindstrom who kinda takes the whole Metro Area thing and runs into a big cloud of psychedelia. You know ... stripped down, half tempo prog-disco.

But, not to sound cheesy, but the track with Erlend Oye is my favorite Morgan Geist production by far ... and I don't even really care for Mr. Oye's vocals.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:07 (eighteen years ago) link

most of those records aren't that easy to stumble upon (though a few of them are). Yeah, there's plenty of unknown records out there, fact is, the ones on Unclassics are a selection of songs that Morgan liked, that he thought he could make a fun mix out of, that he was able to get the rights to, etc. You may think they're boring, but it's not like he just grabbed the first bunch of crappy records he could find.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 20:22 (eighteen years ago) link

nc, Thursday, 2 March 2006 05:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Not particularly interesting. There aren't many moments that really catch my attention, and it just seemed like praise for the obscurity rather than the content. I mean, if those were new tracks from an artist that wasn't Morgan Geist ... I doubt anyone would really care.

He's a great producer, and I do like several Metro Area tracks quite a bit ... this was just boring to me. I mean ... I realize that they weren't HIS tracks, but if I went to his house to listen to records I'd be bummed out if that was the best shit he had within that genre.

Like the post above my last one said ... ones he could buy rights for, etc. I realize it's limited, and it's not like "Unclassics: Best of Morgan Geist's Influences," but I was just bored.

My personal opinion.

Morgan Geist = good
Unclassics = pretty "eh ..." for all the attention it has gotten.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Thursday, 2 March 2006 05:29 (eighteen years ago) link

really?! i thought 'unclassics' was surprisingly good. none of the tracks are hands-in-the-air anthems or anything, but there's not a single bad tune on the whole album. some of the tracks are even eye-opening. my favorite is the hilariously-titled 'manshortage' by the equally hilariously-titled 'eurofunk'....such a fun, bouncy tune, love the keyboards, love the vocals near the end--it's got a real pathos to it. the purple flash tracks are pretty cool. the vocals on the victor track are fuckin' awesome. and even the names of the producers/groups is so great...'pluton and the humanoids' is a top name! if i ever had a kid, i'd name him/her/it 'pluton,' i think.

Metro Area 7 soundclips over at flexx.be!

one time, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 21:10 (sixteen years ago) link

and it has vocals!

"This release finds Metro Area continuing on their quest for fresh sounds and timeless production, expanding the compositional palette while retaining the emotional spirit of their early influences. Metro Area have pushed themselves to once again make heartfelt, personal music that stands out from what the rest of the dance music pack is doing and the duo feel this EP is their strongest work since the release of their 2002 self-titled album. "Read My Mind" is the first full-on vocal track to actually be released by Metro Area (they had amassed a small catalog of unreleased vocal tracks since starting the project). Featuring the incredible pipes of Philip Owusu (of Ubiquity Records' Owusu & Hannibal), "Read My Mind" is a dynamic boogie romp full of contrast: sweet yet meloncholy, warm yet raw. It hearkens back to the days where songwriting and arrangement still had a place in dance music and we hope you'll love it. And for the beat purists, there's an irresistible "RMM Special Dub" version - perfect for doubles! Flipping to the B-side yields "Erodyne" - an incredible space-disco epic that rocks time and space, looking forward with angular arpeggiated riffs and futurist moods while anchored by an undeniably D.I.S.C.O. groove."

one time, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 21:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Pre-electro revival. By Morgan Geist's 1997 debut, it was still all about techno.

but geir...electro-revival was in full swing when Morgan's techno records were coming out. The influence on Metro Area has more to do with disco and boogie and a dash of new wave.
