Michael Hurley - C or D/S or D?

But, his albums are all variations on each other. Not a bad thing, but you can probably dip your toe in at any point. Note that Michael sells tape copies of many of his ostensibly out of print albums at concerts. Go to one of his shows if you can; he's very charming.

i just got around to listening to a promo copy i got a while ago of his latest one, ancestral swamp. it's good. (btw people who like hurley should check out tom house -- he's more gnarled and wordy, but not dissimilar, and underappreciated.)

Just last week I bought a copy of Hurley's "Watertower" from '87, and one track with bad drums aside, it's great! Also, I think Other Music still has two of his other records on the wall, both good ones. Also, do I buy a copy of "Hi-Fi Snock" for $65?

I found a copy of Watertower at the Recorded Sound Room lp sale right here at the library I work at and got it for fifty cents. Hi Fi Snock is pretty damn good but I try hard not to spend more than twenty dollars on any single record, if I can help it. Yes, there are exceptions, of course.

Watertower is v.v. good. For me, I think my fave Hurley rec is Wolfways (which has like half the tunes from Watertower for some inscrutable Hurley reason). Does anyone know if Veracity released it on vinyl?

Finally had a chance to pick up that Wire article, it was quite informative. I never knew the reason Blue Navigator was so rare was because the master tapes and most of the LPs got burned up in a fire. I do take issue with Coley describing Hurley's electric guitar playing as "wildly primitive", I think that sells Hurley short. There is a really great '73 photo of him on tour as well, wildeyed young man with a beer in his hand.

Pete, the Armchair Boogie was $75. If it's still there I'll nab for you. Dunno if I'll have a chance to make it to Other before Wednesday, but will let you know.

it's kind of ridiculous that mississippi can't be arsed to release anything on CD out of hipsterized luddite principle. lots of people w/o record players who would like to hear his first two. (not me, but other folks e.g. my girlfriend.) they're basically asking people to download that shit.

Or you could just, like, buy a record player. I bet you could get one for $30. Isn't that better than stealing from an artist that's still alive?

Mississippi is a vinyl label. that's all they've ever been and all they've claimed to be. heck, if they actually *did* do CDs, many of these artists may not have consented to the reissues in the first place. Did you consider that? Like the Ex, for example -- the records were already out there on CD. I assume Mississippi approached them, and they basically said, "hell yeah, put our stuff on vinyl!"

In fact, was Hurley's 'Ancestral Swamp' ever released on CD? I don't think it was. Did you take that label to task for that? in other words, please give it a rest...

(oh and to follow-on, Hurley's "first one", is indeed on CD)

but, you know, i don't think the folks at mississippi are the type to be upset by losing a potential CD sale to a download; happy enough to sell the LPs they've had manufactured and happy that people without turntables can at least still download. that's my impression anyway.

i understand re. stuff that was never on vinyl. it'd be nice for some folks to have e.g. armchair boogie and hi-fi snock uptown on CD, no?

the first one--there was a reissue, blueberry wine, a few years ago, but it's out of print. but you should still be able to buy a CDR from folkways. and i think they've now reissued that one on vinyl (it has a nice cover too). probably my least favorite hurley record.

btw the new one has him playing a pump organ, and unfortunately it's mic'ed/mixed so that all the clicks and clacks of the organ pedals are extremely loud. sort of the same 'audio verité' stuff as that unlistenable perry tillis record. mississippi annoy me. sorry if this raises any hackles.

it doesn't raise hackles, but the mississippi folks are doing what they want cuz they want to do it that way. they're offering a valuable service, and yeah, they're doing it on their own terms, but come on, they sell their shit cheap as hell. to complain is just churlish. if somebody really wants CD reissues, they should put in the work.

you can't go wrong — i don't think i've heard a bad Michael Hurley record.

I have them all, but I don't come back to Land Of Lo Fi, Ancestral Swamp, the very first one, Back Home..., and Parsnips Snips very much. I'm still glad I have them. Everyone should have at least a dozen Hurley albums.
