Goslings gets my vote but I feel bad not being able to put in for Mount Gay or Cockspur, which didn't make this list out of wikipedia being shit. I want to try Pusser's but haven't found it.

Cosign on Cockspur.

Went with Havana Club.

Cockspur is amazing. mt. gay regular is a fine $20.

sailor jerry is shit btw.

who's tried 10 cane? that is one weird assed rum. i thought i loved it at first and now i can't even stand the smell of it (and no i didn't have a bad experience)

jergïns, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:19 (sixteen years ago) link

All rum is horrifying. I blame a bad college experience with rum and Diet Coke.

HI DERE, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:20 (sixteen years ago) link

cruzan is hella underrated. it's a great 15$ bottle, esp the dark and the amber

jergïns, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait I do like Cruzan! We brought back about a bazillion bottles from our honeymoon ($3/bottle, thankyou VI).

HI DERE, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:31 (sixteen years ago) link

Cruzan yeah. I tend to go for the aged dark mellowed out rums, so some home favorites are El Dorado 15 year and Ron Pampero Anniversario.

Rum is really one of the best values in liquor, it's possible to get some top notch stuff for under $30/bottle.

I DIED, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

in Bermuda I noticed the other rum drink besides barritt's + goslings D&S is cockspur a regular ginger ale like canada dry, kind of a light & stormy I suppose.

El Tomboto, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Appleton and Havana Club are all I've really enjoyed, I will have to try some of the other recommendations here. I prefer to drink it straight up, is that odd?

Matt D, Friday, 2 November 2007 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Not to me, but depends on the rum.

El Tomboto, Friday, 2 November 2007 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Appleton is my favorite of these that I've had; I didn't realize there were so many rums I've never tried.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 November 2007 22:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, I'm through with rum + coke. After many tests I've decided rum + fruit juice (oj + splash of cran my fav) is the route for me.

nickalicious, Friday, 2 November 2007 22:49 (sixteen years ago) link

good rums are supposed to be drank from a snifter, so straight isn't so different. i've had bartenders at expensive places get on me for adding soda and a lime to a 12$ shot.

jergïns, Friday, 2 November 2007 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

everybody try rum rickey (rum + club soda + lime) tonight!

my favorites are cockspur and mt. gay. as jergins said, the cruzans are surprisingly good considering the price; probably the best value i've found.

for you who think you hate rum, don't give up hope. i thought the same thing after my freshman year in college. then i tasted good rum.

I've never had rum at all, as far as I know, but am interested to give it a try. Suggestions?
I'm coming as a whisk(e)y drinker, if that makes any difference, and particularly enjoy more heartily flavoured varieties.

If I can get it in a supermarket here in the UK then even better.

Not many votes on this poll, sadly, so I don't lay too much stock in its results.

Thanks rum drinking friends.

As a whiskey drinker you'll definitely skew toward the aged rums - if you're okay with sweeter notes a lot of them (Ron Zacapa Centenario, Pampero, El Dorado, etc.) have a very developed brown sugar taste which is pretty delicious but definitely sweeter than the caramels in whiskey. Any of the aged rum agricoles from Martinique will be less syrupy and sharper (distilled from cane sugar rather than molasses), also delicious. Not sure about availability in the UK, though.

I DIED, Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah some less-sweet options would be a nice clement from martinique or maybe appleton estate reserve which is real tasty.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 3 October 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm looking for something to drink sans mixer. With or without ice, as appropriate.

I'm certainly partial to a sweetness of taste; I very much enjoy Amaretto, Glayva and Drambuie for example.

calzino, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 15:28 (two years ago) link

wouldn't say no to a SJ, I'm just a bit done with sweet, spiced rums.

My dad got me a bottle of Wood's a while back and it's like 57%, really strong tasting - maybe a bit too much!

A friend had a nice bottle of Diplomatico which you can drink straight as it's very sweet and really quite nice tasting, but I read online that that's because they add sugar to it, which I wonder if it's a bit anti-purist?

I used to sometimes get offered swigs of some unspecified overproof rum in unlabelled bottles or cola cans from Afro-Caribbean punters in the bookies when I worked there, that stuff was dynamite!

calzino, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 15:37 (two years ago) link

For mixing my go-tos are Zaya Gran Reserva (Trinidad & Tobago, for something slightly darker) and Flor de Cana (Nicaragua, for white). I don't drink straight rum, though, but I have a couple of other older aged bottles somewhere.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 15:48 (two years ago) link

I like Diplomatico, it's probably the best bargain for rum in my area. Seems a bit odd to me for people to object to adding sugar to a beverage made from sugarcane juice?

El Dorado's 12 and 15 years are good too.

We have a bottle of El Dorado 12 year, makes delicious rum old fashioneds.

This may not meet the affordability requirement since it runs in the $30-$40 range, but I'm a huge fan of rhum agricole. Clement is the main brand you see in the U.S. It's made from fresh-pressed cane juice, not molasses. It's very grassy, and you can make a Ti Punch with 2 oz, one squeezed lime and a few spoons of cane syrup or simple syrup. Soooooo good, and quick to make.

This is a really good strong drink, it's really complex but not at all sophisticated, which is nice.
It's from a posh tiki bar in Times Sq. Great drinks. Not the nicest place to hang.

The Derelict

.75 oz lime juice
.75 oz grapefruit juice
.25 oz lilikoi puree
.25 oz Don’s Spices #4
.50 oz Demerara syrup
.75 oz banana blend
2 dshr dshs Angostura bitters
4 dshr dshs absinthe
.25 oz Hamilton 151 proof Demerara rum
.50 oz Hamilton Navy Strength rum
.50 oz Appleton Rare Blend 12yr rum
1 oz Buffalo Trace bourbon
1 oz El Dorado 12yr rum

Fauna Sukkot (Deflatormouse), Friday, 11 June 2021 00:45 (two years ago) link

lol

it's really complex but not at all sophisticated,
So why make it so complex, then?! Four rums (two of them high proof, two of them high aged), plus bourbon, seems a bit like ... overkill. Also, I had to google lilikoi. I mean, I would definitely drink it, but that's just nuts.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 June 2021 00:52 (two years ago) link

a needlessly complex tiki cocktail? be still my heart.

call all destroyer, Friday, 11 June 2021 01:03 (two years ago) link

I just meant it's bold and fun and funky rather than elegant or delicate. Have you ever had a 1934 zombie?

It's a great value as well, I think they charge $21 which is like $5 more than your average cocktail in Manhattan with maybe a third of the booze. You don't need a second drink unless you wanna get really blasted, and even then you only need 2.

Had a drink there with peanut butter in it once!

Anyway, to answer the question I think Appleton Estate 12 is a good one.
