this should be cool, it's nice to see them send nimoy off into retirement. i'd be surprised if they fuck this film up, since star trek's cultural capital is about as low as it can be right now.

SPOCK'S BRAIN: THE MOTION PICTURE
― ghost rider, Friday, 27 July 2007 14:24 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah Spock in the movie was too bitchy, I know it was young Spock reconciling his human and vulcan sides, learning to keep emotions in check, but it was still weird.
― musically, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:43 (fourteen years ago) link
the Delta Vega thing seemed like a huge plot hole to me: Nero & co leave Spock on the planet and tell him they're going to destroy Vulcan, so why does Spock just hang around in the cave when he knows exactly where the outpost is and how to get off the planet? Wouldn't his first instinct to be to get to the outpost and warn the people of Vulcan? I have yet to hear an explanation that completely explains what was going on there.
― musically, Friday, January 22, 2010 1:59 AM (17 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
did they actually tell him they were going to destroy vulcan? i don't remember that. also, maybe he was just staying out of the way as to not influence the past?
― I'm FINNISH!!!! (s1ocki), Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:57 (fourteen years ago) link
I'm pretty sure that's exactly why they put him there and they told him he would have to watch his planet suffer. And it seems inconsistent that he's watch his home planet implode while he helps Kirk and Scotty get back on the Enterprise, since Vulcan was always around in the first "reality".

i'm sure that's WHY they put him there, i'm just not sure they told him that. maybe once he sees something irrevocably different has happened, he's like fuck it?
― I'm FINNISH!!!! (s1ocki), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:03 (fourteen years ago) link
but it was a decent movie. wouldn't buy it, though.
I would recommend the blu-ray for anyone who has the setup and likes the movie...It looks incredible and has tons of features. There's a little doc on Nimoy playing Spock for presumably the last time that turns out to be fairly moving. The man himself is in tears as he completes his final scene.

not a star trek dude really, but finally saw this and it was AWESOME.
Totally with this. It's not really a proper Star Trek movie even, it just riffs on the mythology. But's it's my favourite of the lot.

here's the quote from Spock in the film:
"Nero spared my life for one reason: so that i would know his pain. he beamed me here so i could observe his vengeance."
I figure that means that Nero told him, but let's say he didn't; that still doesn't explain why Spock would stay on the planet when he knows where the outpost is.

"No, just because you don't have to have anything but the most fleeting knowledge of its parent shows and movies to fully enjoy it."
Cranking Beastie Boys in the kid kirk sequence wasn't enjoyable until I found out upthread that it might be a reference to an obscure tape of Shatner throwing a hissy fit over pronouncing "sabotage" for the animated series.
